The second half of our interview with Nate Graham that covers the policies and costs of AI in KDE. According to Nate, and we tend to agree, setting up policies that are unenforceable will simply encourage those that want to circumvent the policy to do so, and just not tell anybody. How hard is it to remove a CLAUDE md file anyway?

But of course, there's only so much you can lament AI and LLM's incursion into everything Linux, so we end up getting back on how KDE Linux works with the update deltas, the fact that we've been daily driving it for months (at least Dan has!), easy rollbacks, full disk encryption's future, and the road to getting it on real hardware off the shelf.

We've asked Nate to come back again sometime to give us more updates on KDE and KDE Linux, so keep an eye out for that!

We start with a little intro about Nate and Techpaladin but quickly get into the weeds of everything KDE Linux including the friction of KWallet, how it's a known issue and will be replaced outright! A little Valve conversation as they're inextricably linked to KDE and Plasma these days! Shipping KDE on hardware, KDE Linux being the "reference implementation" and its place in the "distroverse." Hint: It's a whole Operating System.

We like Mozilla, we really do, but use this VPN sparingly and with the knowledge that it'll be quite trivial for sites to figure out what your real IP address is. Unless you're into that kind of thing. Using a WebRTC call, sites can easily bypass the VPN's protection to see your real IP address unless you manually turn it off in about:config. The option is "media.peerconnection.enabled"

It seems Vivaldi's built-in VPN does indeed protect against this leakage, so it's not like it can't be done.

There's a new browser in town and it's not based on Firefox or Chromium, but WebKit! Kagi, the paid search engine is now diving into the wide world of browsers and making it cross-platform, including iOS and Android. Their super power is being able to run all the current Firefox and Chromium extensions across everything, and would be the first on iOS to do so.

Will this be the thing that causes the Firefox stranglehold to lift on the Linux side? Will it make inroads on Windows and MacOS, too? We sure hope so. And maybe Gnome Web can steal a thing or two 😃

Based on Rust, of course, Xfce has stopped its previous attempt at porting Xfwm to Wayland, and instead, created Xfwl. Going forward, it'll be interesting to see what kind of progress the team makes with a clean slate. But it makes us wonder... who's gonna use it? Every Xfce user we encounter much prefers living on X 🤔

And of course, we can't talk about desktops without slipping in a little Cosmic 😊

Mozilla's gotten itself a new CEO, and the outlook seems much the same, with an emphasis on AI being baked into the browser. While most folks on the ethical side of the argument (like Waterfox and the derivatives) lean towards no, the more pragmatic might find this as a net positive.

Overall, the focus is on growth, and the fundamentals, at least, seem good.

System76 and the Cosmic desktop are making all the right moves with it's full release by solving problems that Linux distros and desktops don't usually solve. Normal people problems. In this case specifically, sync. That's file sync, config sync, the kitchen sync. And with the desktop being so usable, even on other distros, it might gain some decent adoption quickly. Oh... it's also their first real attempt at a desktop all their own?

The KDE team has announced that X11 will soon (2027) be unsupported on Plasma and become Wayland-only rather than Wayland-first. Steam Deck is already there for the most part with Gamescope, and between normal installs of newer Plasma, Steam Deck, Kubuntu and Bazzite, Plasma is growing by the minute. Wayland is inevitable!

If you don't want Wayland at all, neither Gnome or KDE Plasma with be right for you (outside of Long Term Support Linuxes), so Xfce, Lxqt, and tiling window managers will be your only refuge.
