We see a man who is desperate to hear from God. He looks around at his country and his culture and is very disturbed by what he sees. In this chapter, Habakkuk hears from God and God shares with him His plan to deal with the violence and the injustice in Judah. However, as we will see, Habakkuk does not understand nor does he like God's plan. Have you ever felt like God was silent? Have you ever been confused or frustrated with God's plan?

In this passage, we get a final "big picture" view of the people who were changed by Jesus. Jesus met each of them at a crisis point. Sometimes, His very presence and words caused the rupture of an unresolved crisis layered over by years of neglect. Undoubtedly, you will be able to write yourself into the story one of these very relatable characters. We leave this passage with a renewed conviction that Jesus can meet us in our crises and heal simmering wounds resting below the surface.

Jesus concluded the Upper Room Discourse and then what? With the betrayer's work of sedition imminent, in the presence of his disciples ... He chooses to pray. Praying aloud, who and what Jesus prays for reveals His commitments and concerns. What did this act of love mean to His disciples? And if Jesus actively intercedes for us today, what does it mean for you and me?

One of our greatest fears is being left alone. The thought of a future without a loved one can be bleak and soul-crushing. The crisis for Jesus and his disciples is upon them. As Jesus' Passover discourse moves towards its conclusion, He continues to prepare them for a future without Him. Just as He will not be alone (vs. 32), neither will His friends. He will send a Helper, the Holy Spirit. Though it does not make sense to the disciples in the moment, Jesus assures them that it will be better in the long run. It doesn't make sense on the surface, so we will try to unpack the meaning of Jesus' words and their relevance for us today. It is better for us too.

While the world could not 'see' Jesus, he would become visible in the minds of His followers through faith. This week Jesus will extend this way of seeing to include not only the things we do, but the right motivation and source of power lying underneath those actions.
