Dr. Maki will review obesity, metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes mellitus as they are all insulin resistant states and are often characterized by atherogenic dyslipidemia or the "lipid triad" of elevated triglycerides, low HDL cholesterol and a predominance of small, dense LDL particles.
Host Dr. Alan S. Brown welcomes Janet Maxson, NP, PhD, iPresident-Elect of the Midwest Lipid Association and the Director Women's Health at Minot Health & Wellness in Minot, North Dakota. Dr. Maxson is also a Fellow of the American Heart Association Council of Cardiovascular Nursing and the National Lipid Association. Dr. Maxson will review which calcium supplements are better for women, how much calcium is needed, and define the screening guidelines that are in place to screen women's bones in the context of heart disease.

And, has served as an Investigator in over 400 Phase I - IV clinical trials for treatments for high cholesterol and other dyslipidemias, obesity, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, osteoporosis, and other metabolic and hormonal disorders. Dr. Bays has also served as Medical Director of L-MARC Research Center since 1989 - a clinical research facility originally established in 1989 - and President of L-MARC Research Center since its independent incorporation in 1998.
Host Dr. Alan Brown welcomes Dr. William "Bill" Harris on an important discussion facing our colleagues and ptients- "Are Fish Oils still cardioprotective?". Dr. Harris will address the recent randomized trials, how the trials differ from those done in the 1990s, and how clinicians should utlize the information in treating their patients.
Dr. William "Bill" Harris holds a PhD in Nutritional Biochemistry from the University of Minnesota. His research has focused on human lipid and lipoprotein metabolism, especially as they are affected by omega-3 fatty acids. He has been the principal investigator on 5 omega-3 related NIH grants, and since 2004 has been evaluating the RBC "omega-3 index" as a new risk factor for cardiovascular and neuropsychiatric diseases.
