Liquid Sunshine Radio Show - Funk, Groove, Disco & Beats - All The Good Stuff!!

Hello Groovers,

Some called it French house, some called it filter house, but the name that really stuck came from a slogan printed on the back of bomber jackets by Éric Morand’s Fnac label in the early ’90s: “We give a French touch to house”

Tonight, I am not much in a talkative mood, actually, I am a bit contemplative. Which is a perfect opportunity to fiddle some nobs and get lost in the music. I have some gorgeous disco house tunes lined up, and will be mixing these up for you to enjoy.

Hello Groovers,

Last weekend I went to the Womad festival in Adelaide. A festival should always be bigger than the sum of its parts, and I was struck by the myriad ways and moments in which different acts spoke to one another, tracing a lineage of genres and their influence – from pioneers of Afrobeat, Ethio-jazz, Tropicália and Zamrock to younger generations of artists, and across multitude permutations of soul, funk, R&B and rock. Tonight I will show you how the speaking was done.

Hello Groovers,

Seriously, how many records do I go through before I reach the bottom of the pile. Well, quite a lot. I am still sorting and sifting through a pile to prepare some DJ sets, and you are on the journey with me. I am in a mellow summery mood, so expect some Disco, Boogie and House tunes to reflect that mood.

Face the Music - Nigerian Album Covers and National Identity

Highlife, Afrobeat and African Psychedelic Soul

Hello Groovers,

Tonight we look at those portraits that were used to sell music in the tumultuous, mercurial decade of the 1970s when Nigeria’s primary concern was the construction of national identity, the making and re-making of a country. What secrets about this national project did the musicians’ faces hold, just as their music did? How was the zeitgeist written on their bodies, the bodies with which they sang the songs of the people?
