Matthew 1:18-21 This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. 19 Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.
20 But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”
In the first few sentences of the story, His destiny is revealed in His name:
Jesus SavesIsaiah 9:6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Wonderful: pele' (peh'-leh); beyond understanding, too wonderful for words.
Counselor: ya`ats (yaw-ats'); to advise; to consult, to guide.Hebrews 4:15-16 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are-yet was without sin. Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.
Luke 5:31-32 Jesus answered them, "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance."
BE HONEST WITH THE COUNSELOR.John 4:16-17 (Jesus) told her, "Go, call your husband and come back." 17 "I have no husband," she replied.
Psalms 55:22 Cast your cares on the LORD and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous fall.
LISTEN TO THE COUNSELOR’S VOICE.Mark 9:7…a voice came from the cloud: "This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!"
John 10:27 My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.
TAKE THE COUNSELOR’S ADVICE.Mark 10:20-21a "Teacher," he declared, "all these I have kept since I was a boy." Jesus looked at him and loved him.
Mark 10:21b-22 "One thing you lack," he said. "Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me." At this the man's face fell. He went away sad, because he had great wealth.
