    Summary:

Things you bring on a desert island...

    - Sunscreen, obviously. Because these Irish freckles of mine will burn, baby, burn, and lobster red is not a great color on me.

    - An extra dose of my seizure meds, just in case.

    - A backpack full of snacks, including but not limited to a canteen of Dr. Pepper, a box of mini Christmas cookies, and granola bars—the gross crumbly kind, not the chocolate chip kind, because I'm trying to be healthy.

    - Sunglasses, so that when I inevitably wind up staring at my brother's best friend—who I haven't seen in years—no one will be able to tell. I've been in love with him for years, but it would never work out; he lives on a literal island, while I'm still in grad school. It can't hurt to look, though, right?

    - Also bug spray.

My packing list is all well and good for a quick port excursion as part of my family’s Christmas cruise. But when the cruise ship leaves me behind, with only the contents of my bag and my brother’s best friend to keep me company? Well, I’ve got problems—especially since I'm going to run out of medicine soon. And I don’t think they make sunscreen strong enough to block the sparks that are growing between Beckett and me...

Despite her mother’s pleadings against it, May signs on as a lady’s maid to the young wife of a naval captain. Narrator: Jake Adelstein, Shoko Plambeck

    Format: Unabridged

    Length: 09:00:13

    Language: English

    Release date: 10-01-24

    Publisher: Dreamscape Media, LLC

Genres: Biography & Memoir, Non-Fiction, True Crime, Mystery, Thriller & Horror, Literary

    Summary:

A darkly comic sequel to Tokyo Vice that is equal parts history lesson, true-crime exposé, and memoir.

Its 2008, and its been a while since Jake Adelstein was the only gaijin crime reporter for the Yomiuri Shimbun. The global economy is in shambles, Jake is off the police beat but still chain-smoking clove cigarettes, and Tadamasa Goto, the most powerful boss in the Japanese organized crime world, has been banished from the yakuza, giving Adelstein one less enemy to worry aboutfor the time being. But as he puts his life back together, he discovers that he may be no match for his greatest enemyhimself.

And Adelstein has a different gig these days: due diligence work, or using his investigative skills to dig up information on entities whose bosses would prefer that some things stay hidden.

The underworld isnt what it used to be. Underneath layers of paperwork, corporations are thinly veiled fronts for the yakuza. Pachinko parlors are a hidden battleground between disenfranchised Korean, Japanese, and North Korean extortion plots. TEPCO, the electric power corporation keeping the lights on for all of Tokyo, scrambles to hide its willful oversights that ultimately led to the 2011 Fukushima meltdown. And the Japanese government shows levels of corruption that make the yakuza look like philanthropists in comparison. All this is punctuated by personal tragedies no one could have seen coming.

In this ambitious and riveting work, Jake Adelstein explores what its like when youre in too deep to distinguish the story you chase from the life you live.

    Summary:

Winner of the 2022 Nobel Prize in Literature.

An account of Annie Ernauxs love affair with journalist Marc Marie while she was undergoing treatment for cancer, and their combined project to document images and memories.

Love and death cohabit in The Use of Photography, with alternating chapters by the two authors. First published in France in 2005, the book recounts a passionate love affair between Ernaux and the journalist and author Marc Marie, after the two met in January 2003. Ernaux had been receiving intensive chemo for breast cancer during the prior three months and had lost all her hair from the treatments. At the end of January, she had surgery, followed by radiation therapy.

The affair took place in different locations, and Ernaux describes how, shortly after it began, she found herself entranced each morning by the sight of clothes strewn about, chairs out of place and the remains of their last meal of the evening still on the tableand how painful it felt to put things back in order afterward. She went and got her camera, and began to take photographs of the scenes of disarray. When she told Marc Marie what she had done, he said he had felt the same desire.

The Use of Photography is one of the quintessential Ernaux bookstold through words in Ernauxs inimitable style, which is adopted here by both authors.
