    Format: Unabridged

    Length: 04:43:35

    Language: English

    Release date: 06-08-21

    Publisher: Tantor Media

    Genres: Non-Fiction, Architecture & Design

    Summary:

John Heskett wants to transform the way we think about design by showing how integral it is to our daily lives, from the spoon we use to eat our breakfast cereal, and the car we drive to work in, to the medical equipment used to save lives. Design combines 'need' and 'desire' in the form of a practical object that can also reflect the user's identity and aspirations through its form and decoration.

This concise guide to contemporary design goes beyond style and taste to look at how different cultures and individuals personalize objects. Heskett also reveals how simple objects, such as a toothpick, can have their design modified to suit the specific cultural behavior in different countries. There are also fascinating insights into how major companies such as Nokia, Ford, and Sony approach design. Finally, Heskett gives us an exciting vision of what design can offer us in the future, showing in particular how it can humanize new technology.

    Summary:

From Zeus and Europa, to Diana, Pan, and Prometheus, the myths of ancient Greece and Rome seem to exert a timeless power over us. But what do those myths represent, and why are they so enduringly fascinating? Why do they seem to be such a potent way of talking about our selves, our origins, and our desires? This imaginative and stimulating Very Short Introduction goes beyond a simple retelling of the stories to explore the rich history and diverse interpretations of classical mythology. It is a wide-ranging account, examining how classical myths are used and understood in both high art and popular culture, taking the listener from the temples of Crete to skyscrapers in New York, and finding classical myths in a variety of unexpected places: from Arabic poetry and Hollywood films, to psychoanalysis, the Bible, and New Age spiritualism.

    Summary:

Falling for the professor wasn't part of the plan . . .

From the moment the man walked into the bar, I knew he was still in the closet. But that didn't stop us from sharing an incredible night together.

Our easy, one-night hookup went from no-strings-attached to a tangled mess on the first day of the semester, when I locked eyes with the mystery man from the bar . . . who also happens to be my new art history professor.

Lucas Mathiasson is everywhere I turn and the harder we try to resist, the closer we're pulled together. Until our weekend in Vegas. Then all bets-and rules-are off.

But lessons in love can't be taught from a syllabus. They have to be experienced. And not all love is easy. Not all rules are meant to be broken. And not all men are created to live life in the open.

Falling for my professor wasn't part of the plan . . . but how do you let go of the man who taught you how to love?

    Contains mature themes.

    Format: Unabridged

    Length: 04:18:39

    Language: English

    Release date: 06-08-21

    Publisher: Tantor Media

    Genres: Politics, History

    Summary:

A great deal of the world's history is the history of empires. Indeed it could be said that all history is colonial history, if one takes a broad enough definition and goes far enough back. And although the great historic imperial systems-the land-based Russian one as well as the seaborne empires of western European powers-have collapsed during the past half century, their legacies shape almost every aspect of life on a global scale. Meanwhile there is fierce argument, and much speculation, about what has replaced the old territorial empires in world politics. Do the United States and its allies, transnational companies, financial and media institutions, or more broadly the forces of 'globalization,' constitute a new imperial system?

Stephen Howe interprets the meaning of the idea of 'empire' through the ages, disentangling the multiple uses and abuses of the labels 'empire' and 'colonialism,' etc., and examines the aftermath of imperialism on the contemporary world.

The fire may be out, but smoke and suspicion still linger in Santa Lucia. Though the townspeople still gather for espresso at the town cafe and swap recipes at the butcher shop, their iridescent blue sky is clouded by a veil of uncertainty and mistrust. The statue of the Madonna, set in a wall outside the cafe, watches it all in collected silence.

But when New Yorker Alessandro arrives to claim his inheritance-the derelict castle and the charred olive trees that surround it-it unearths secrets thought long buried. His renovation plans set off a chain reaction of dangerous relationships and forbidden romance while exposing explosive truths-not just for himself, but for all the people who call this village home.

Can the power of the Madonna save Alessandro and the villagers? Or will the truths brought to the surface trap Santa Lucia in an inescapable web of deceit and anger?

Businesses have a big role to play in a capitalist society. They can tip the scales toward the benefit of the few, with toxic side effects for all, or they can guide us toward better, more equitable long-term solutions. Christopher Marquis tells the story of the rise of a new corporate form-the B Corporation. Founded by a group of friends who met at Stanford, these companies undergo a rigorous certification process, overseen by the B Lab, and commit to putting social benefits, the rights of workers, community impact, and environmental stewardship on equal footing with financial shareholders. Informed by over a decade of research and animated by interviews with the movement's founders and leading figures, Marquis's book explores the rapid growth of companies choosing to certify as B Corps, both in the United States and internationally, and explains why the future of B Corporations is vital for us all.

    Length: 07:16:33

    Language: English

    Release date: 06-06-21

    Publisher: Tantor Media

    Genres: History, North America

    Summary:

There were Marshals, City Marshals, and Constables who were employed by the local townspeople and whose authority was restricted to within the town or city limits. Then there were the County Sheriffs, who were elected by the citizens of the county, to keep the peace within the county. The United States Marshals were appointed by the President of the United States and had the authority to operate anywhere in the USA and deal with federal crime. Each of these law enforcement officers employed their own deputies, all of whom had the same powers of enforcement.

Some believed that former criminals would make the most effective lawmen. Consequently, in some cases notorious gunfighters were employed as town marshals to help bring law and order to some of the most lawless of towns. These lawmen dealt with the likes of the Dalton Gang and the James Brothers, who thought nothing of raping and murdering innocent people.

The requirements needed to be a peace officer in the Wild West were often determined only by the individual's skill with a gun, and their courage. At times judgment was needed with only seconds to determine it, and that also meant that there was the odd occasion where justice and law never quite meant the same thing. The expression 'justice without law' was never truer than in the formative years of the West.
