  • Short Story: Choosing a pet for Christmas

This is two parts:  First part is the story and the second part is the Listening Comprehension Questions.

    Enjoy! Annika

    Choosing a pet for Christmas

This year for Christmas, I am going to ask my parents for a pet. I have narrowed my selection down to six pets. I will ask for a turtle, lizard, bird, snake, dog, or cat. I'm guessing that my mother will object to the lizard and snake because she's afraid of them. My father will probably say no to the bird and the cat for different reasons. He'll most like say that the bird is too loud and the cat sheds too much fur. So, I will most likely ask for a dog.

What kind of dog should I get? Well, I don't have a backyard, but there's a dog park within walking distance. I don't want a furry dog or a huge dog. I don't care if it's a mutt, so I will probably get a dog from a shelter. I don't care if it's a male or female dog either. I just want a companion because I'm lonely. We can do many things together, like go for walks, play in the park, and camp in the backyard.

I know a dog is a lot of responsibility, but I am twelve, so I am ready to take on more responsibilities. I keep my room clean and do my chores on time every week without being told to do so. I have good grades in school, and I'm even a hall monitor at school. I've never had a pet before, so I am so excited. I will be heartbroken if my parents say no. Hopefully, they won't say no. Wish me luck!

      4. Short Story: The Only Child

        Thank you for listening Annika.

        The Only Child

I don't have any brothers or sisters. I wish I did because I am an only child. It's lonely being an only child. All my friends have siblings, but I'm the only one who doesn't. They say I am lucky. I used to think differently until one day, my friend Lisa told me how much it sucked having siblings. She hates having siblings. I was shocked because my mother says 'hate' is a very strong word, and we shouldn't use it lightly. So when she said hate, I knew she felt strongly about it. Lisa doesn't like having siblings because you have to share everything. There never seems to be enough food to go around. Also, she said she never has privacy because there's not enough room. Once she told me this, I began to appreciate my situation because I don't have to share, and there's plenty because there's only me. I'm the only kid. More importantly, I don't have to share my parent's attention.   I cherish the quality time I spend with my grandparents and my parents. Even though I have so much to be grateful for, having siblings would still be nice. If I had siblings, I would have someone to talk to when upset. I would have someone to help me with bullies at school, and I would have someone to play with when I am bored.

Turner, Elizabeth A.. Short Stories: Third Reader Grade. United States, Ginn & Company, 1897.

        The story

THE LOST HAT. " WHERE is my hat, mother? ” said Johnny, one day. " I don't know ," answered his mother. " Well, how can I go to school without my hat ? ” he said . " Oh, I will let you wear my hat, ” said his mother ; " I know where that is . ” 832 € ' But I don't want to wear your hat, mother. I should be ashamed to wear your hat to school,” said Johnny, almost crying. " Yes,” answered his mother, “ I suppose you would. But it seems to me you ought to be ashamed, too, not to know where your own hat is . ” " I am sorry that I don't know ,” said Johnny; " but I don't see why I should be ashamed .” Because ,” answered his mother, " it shows that you cannot be trusted to take care of your own things. If you cannot take care of a hat now, what are you going to do when you are a man , and have a great many things to take care of ? ” " Oh , ” said Johnny, " I shall learn to take care of things before I grow to be a man.” " Not if you don't begin to learn now ," answered his mother. Just then , Johnny happened to look up in the cherry -tree by the door, and there was his hat among the branches. " I see my hat ! ” he cried out. " I remember now that I took it off when I was up getting cherries, and then I forgot all about it . ” So Johnny climbed up in the tree, got his hat, and ran off to school as fast as he could run.
