The journals cover two periods near the end of his life, a year and a half in the early 1930s, and a slightly shorter period in 1934 and 1935. These are in a sense travel journals, for Nock was on the move, with repeated trips to Europe as well as extensive travels in the U.S.

The journals begin as the Great Depression deepens. Nock's insights are many and varied. He notes that only American banks had failed: banks in England and Canada remained intact and afloat. He is taken aback at the petty tyrannies of the government's reaction to the depression, and states that "There is nothing like this to breed serf-mindedness, and nothing like serf-mindedness to destroy character." He goes on to speculate "that no people in the Middle Ages ever showed such general and inveterate serf-mindedness as the American people has showed for twenty years, and with so little excuse or reason."

And yet many of his insights run deeper, and seem less despairing. "[M]an is incapable of conducting a satisfactory collective life on any larger than township scale," Nock states. "Neither his collective intelligence nor his collective emotional power will stretch much beyond that. Not everything good in life rests foursquare upon political government. Society governs itself to an amazing degree.

Nock remains a vital source for us individualists of today, who find our fortunes rising but just a bit. Even as everything seems to teeter on the edge of totalitarianism, just as it did (ominously) in Nock's "forgotten days".

Revealing look into the Johnson period

This book revealed Lady Bird to be incredibly intelligent and an amazingly supportive partner for LBJ in every sense of the word. The programs she spearheaded and delivered to the country are still firmly rooted in our american culture today. She was arguably one of the most influential First Ladies of all the First Ladies. I was touched by her humility as well.

The performance was articulate and well delivered. Very clear and listenable. One very small point, at times when listening in s very quiet restful time the voice seemed a tiny bit strident. However, the Texan accent was spot on.

The author's purpose is big noting himself not discussing FDR, I gave up after an hour!

The author wrote more about himself in this book and his legal and political ups and downs than about Franklin Roosevelt. A few nice stories about FDR, but I would not recommend this as a must read.

Great Book from an outstanding Conservative Woman

What did you like best about this story?

It was very well read and painted a very clear picture of the deterioration of common sense toward Christmas from the nutty left in the US

Have you listened to any of Sarah Palins other performances before? How does this one compare?

Unfortunately I havde not, but she was worth listening to. Generally I do not enjoy listening to women readers, but Sarah was completely different. I really enjoyed her voice and agreed with her message.

I am a right wing conservative who believes in the Constitution in it's original form. I believe that Obama, Clinton, LBJ, Roosevelt, Hoover and Wilson have been and are taking us down the wrong road to eventual destruction. So if you are a conservative who believes in the foundlings of our constitution and christianity, then you will enjoy this book.

Where does The Autobiography rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

The file is faulty and jumps at 4:40:45 seconds from 1979 to 1992. I have downloaded this onto a different device separately and the same problem occurs. Please rectify it Audible.

The authentic voice certainly adds to the enjoyment of listening to this book. I am convinced she was a woman right for her time, very sure of herself, certain in her own mind as to what had to be done. Of course she wasn't always right - none of us are but dangerous for a person with so much power. Averall a good 'read'.

A Nice Surprise

This book pleasantly surprised me. Having read a great deal on Churchill, I initially thought that this would be one of those "slice of life" books that rehashed everything said before, but with my interest in WSC and his having such a large life, allowing for many "slices" I bought it and thought i would skip through it and put it on the shelf. Silly me.

Shelden gives us a good summary of WSC's early life and his rise to power. The author's angle on this is to present information on a number of women that WSC fell in love with in his youth, some of whom did not return his affections, with the exception of two, his wife Clementine and his admirer, Violet Asquith, whose affection for Winston was not reciprocated. As for Pamela Plowden and Ethel Barrymore, I am not sure that they are important to the story, as Winston appears to have set his sights too high. The story of Muriel Wilson is more interesting but none of this compares, in my opinion, to the relationship with Violet Asquith, the daughter of the Prime Minister Herbert Henry Asquith. It is through Violet (later Violet Bonham Carter, who published her memories of WSC in 1965)that we see not only a beautiful, intelligent young woman, but one who had her father's attention and worked diligently to advance the career of young Winston. Of course, we all know he ended up enchanted with Clementine Hozier after a meeting at a dinner party and married her. I think Violet would have made the more interesting companion, but Winston did not consult me. But through all this we get a much better understanding of her father, which is an interesting story in itself.

Also of interest to me is the human side the author shows of Churchill's mother, the American Jennie Jerome Churchill. In previous readings, I always found her a hedonistic personality, only interested in the next man, the next dinner party, the next social excursion, but Shelden shows her to have much more interest in her son, and even pride in him, attending his first speech in the House of Commons and even (ineffectively) campaigning for him.

There was never any doubt that WSC was a young man on the rise, and we are presented a host of contributors, opponents and supporters along the way. We are also reminded that Churchill promoted himself, and with one early controversial move in his political career, changed from his father's party of Conservative or Tory to the Liberal party, which many never ever forgave him, but WSC wanted to be with the winning horse in the race. It helps explain why he did it one more time during his long political career.

In spite of various cabinet positions, he is more prominently remembered as First Lord of the Admiralty just prior to the Great War. He attained this lofty position shy of 37 years of age and, like everything else, threw himself into the work while he and Clemmie grew a family.

Interesting material

Information that i think you won't find elseware. Disturbing matter of fact view of slavery, almost feels that the book condones it.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Better narration and pacing would have helped a lot.

Has Thomas Jefferson's Creme Brulee turned you off from other books in this genre?

No not at all.

What didnt you like about Alan Sklars performance?

His voice wass heavy and foreboding as if he were one of those men who voice thhe coming attractions of horror or disastermovies. He could read twinkle twinkle little star and send chills up your spine. In addition his breathing is unprofessional, he inhales at the beginning of each phrase and the decision to quote the French in a French accent was a regrettable one.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Disappointment. The author goes off on strange tangents while painfully, obviously ignoring the white elephant in the room. The Hemings were mentioned only out of necessity. I was deeply disturbed by the authors fawning treatment of Jefferson to the detriment of the truth. This book was not, nor should it have been, a moral or historical treatise on Jefferson and slavery.however, the author was somehow inform us of Jeffersons hatred of a system that oppresses men and women and forces them to live in grinding poverty so the aristocracy can flourish- and this without eeven a hint of irony. At one point Jefferson is even admired by the author for spending half an hour in his garden in the afternoon. Very noble when human chattel toil, waveless and belashed the other 23.5 hours.thid was an unambiguous yarn and not the historical epicurean morsel I had so hungrily anticipated.

Interesting, but thin on food history

If you're interested in Colonial America, the Founding Fathers, etc., you may learn something from this book about Jefferson's tastes in food and where he sourced his farms. Unfortunately, the author spends more time giving historical context, much of which can be found in any other book about Jefferson, and less about food, much less crème brulee, and not enough information about James Hemings. Still, it is a fun read with an excellent narrator.

new knowledge about Lincoln

What the author does is select special days out of Lincoln's presidency and describes them succinctly. I've read volumes of material on Lincoln over the years but this book highlighted facets of people surrounding Lincoln and pivotal events many of which added to my understanding of the man and his life.

One thing I took away was this gentleman had the patience of Job particularly when dealing with non-hackers or political enemies some of whom he brought into his cabinet. Seward, for example, thought he was going to be the nominee when Lincoln prevailed, acted independently as though he HAD been the nominee--and winner, and subsequently ran the State Department like his own fiefdom; Chase thought Lincoln was a rube and treated him thusly. Lincoln obviously subscribed to the idea that you should keep enemies closer. As he did McClellan who subsequently ran against Lincoln for his second term.

Civil War history at its best!!

This book is an excellent review of Lee's Petersburg campaign through Appomatttox. It is good for the beginner listner as well as a more advanced Civil War historian. The presentation is better than the sample on the listner page would indicate. I would highly recomend this book. It is GREAT!

Any additional comments?

Considering myself somewhat of a Civil War buff I was a bit taken aback by a few of Mr. Dowdey's conclusions. He strongly believes that Master Robert was almost infallible, Longstreet is overrated, Davis was an idiot, and Jackson had he lived would of made all the difference. The truth is probably somewhere in between what is contained in the book and what we have commonly been taught but he makes some very strong arguments to back up his claims. He fully realizes that some of his conclusions are out of the norm and he takes the time to point out the contrasts. For me these were the most enjoyable parts of the book, hence my 4 star rating for the story.

The production quality is poor. The words are spoken clearly but there are multiple post productions edits. Kevin Charles is OK but he has the type of voice that allowed me drift from time to time.

I do recommend this book but if you are looking for a balanced account you are probably looking in the wrong place.
