    Publisher's Summary:
Born on Emancipation Day, 1863, to a sharecropping family of African and Indian blood, Elijah Yancy never lived as a slave, but his self-image as a free person is at war with his surroundings: Spartanburg, South Carolina, in the Reconstructed South. Exiled for his own survival as a teenager, Elijah walks west to the Nebraska plains and, like other rootless young African-American men of that era, joins the U.S. Cavalry. The trajectory of Elijahs army career parallels the nations imperial adventures in the late nineteenth century: subduing Native Americans in the West and quelling rebellion in the Philippines.
Haunted by the terrors endured by black Americans and by his part in persecuting other people of color, Elijah is sustained only by visions, memories, prayers, and his questing spiritwhich ultimately finds a home when his troop is posted to guard the newly created Yosemite National Park in 1903. Here, living with little beyond mountain light, cold rivers, campfires, and stars, he becomes a man who owns himself completely, while knowing hes left pieces of himself scattered along his lifes path like pebbles on a creekbed. Elijah's narrative voicepoetic, rhythmically cadenced, ranging freely through timemakes this novel a literary meditation on finding a self and a spiritual home, while unveiling a little-known chapter of Americas past.

Poetic treatment of the adventures of a buffalo soldier in Yosemite
An interesting slice of history, told in a poetic voice with a deep appreciation for natural beauty. Johnson narrates through the eyes of a "buffalo soldier," a freed slave who becomes a cavalry officer and eventually a park ranger in Yosemite. Along the way he witnesses both brutality and kindness, and enormous beauty. I found it particularly interesting for its broadly multicultural view of the American west - the narrator interacts with Native Americans trying to maintain their traditions in Yosemite, Mexicans trying to make a living by pasturing sheep there, and many white antagonists in various settings.
    Poetry, Dreams and Similes
Shelton Johnson has created an excellent work of historical fiction. The book is presented as the memoirs of Elijah Yancey, an American with African, Seminole and Cherokee roots, who is born in South Carolina and grows up to be a Buffalo soldier who spends one year patrolling Yosemite National Park. There are 40 chapters in the book that can stand alone as thought-provoking essays about various events and topics in his life, but there is a synergy that binds them all together, and this book â this collection of essays â is greater than the sum of its parts.
The synergy is derived from Elijahâs search for justice and fulfillment. Unfortunately for Elijah, justice is elusive. There is only one example of a white man - the officer who recruits him into the Ninth Cavalry Regiment - treating Elijah with any degree of respect, but the descriptions of injustice go beyond racism directed at African-Americans and encompass freedoms that are denied to Native Americans, Filipinos and others; and the reader feels Elijahâs pain and frustration when he describes these injustices. But, ultimately, the reader rejoices at the fulfillment that Elijah does find in Yosemite and beyond Yosemite.
There are many outstanding elements of this book.

    inaccurateDisappointing
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
While the narration is acceptable, the author plays fast and loose with history. Many anachronisms exist in the story. It is unfortunate, as it would have set up well as a comparison to the Populares vs Beni politics of Caesar???s time. The series doesn???t break well in the books. None of the characters are particularly well rounded, nor can one sympathize much with any of them.
What do you think your next listen will be?
    different author.
Which character ??? as performed by Nick Boulton ??? was your favorite?
    Marcellius
Did The Sword of Revenge inspire you to do anything?
    no.
    Any additional comments?
A true historical type fiction such as found in Sayer's books or in Colleen McCullough's books would have been very interesting. Instead, one is presented with a story that is mildly interesting but lacks any real historical footing.
Disappointing end to a great series
I don't write reviews, not sure anyone wants to hear what I think, but I was so disappointed in the end of this series, that I felt compelled. The series was so complete beforehand, so rich and full of character development that I couldn't wait for each new book. It was clear from reading this last in the trilogy that the author was up against a deadline in finishing the series; that he wrapped up the entire story in a few pages. The defeat of the ultimate enemy, the discovery of who our hero truly was, his meeting with his mother to tell him the truth, all brought to fruition in such a rapid fashion, that I was left feeling cheated. Shame on the author for taking us on a wonderful ride, only to completly let the reader down in the end.
Good second part to the story
What made the experience of listening to The Sword of Revenge the most enjoyable?
Good development of the main character Aquilla.
What did you like best about this story?
It gives a broad coverage of issues and personalities in Republican Rome. The cast of characters are each shown with their own motivations and rarely as completely good or bad.
Have you listened to any of Nick Boultons other performances before? How does this one compare?
I listened to his performance of the first book in this series. He is a perfect fit for this story.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
    Game of Rome

    A Touching Tale
Who was your favorite character and why?
Alan the Australian RAF pilot. He was a young man who had everything, until he lost his brother and his feet. Alan and his surviving friends from World War II suffer from what we now call post-traumatic stress. The story revolves around how these characters deal with this stress.
Which character as performed by Patrick Tull was your favorite?
This book was produced by Recorded Books LLC, the best producer of audio books in the world by far, and read by Patrick Tull, the best narrator in the world! Most of the book is narration by the main character Alan, and Tull captures him perfectly. One has the sense that Alan is speaking directly to the listener.Tull doesn't read or perform, he becomes Alan!
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
In Europe this book is known as 'Requiem for a Wren'.The core of the story takes place in and around the Isle of Wight in the weeks prior to D-Day in World War II. Like the characters in this novel, Shute himself was in the thick of the invasion preparations. He was an engineering officer in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve responsible for various secret weapons used in the invasion of France. Shute takes the reader into this pressure cooker environment from the point of view of the 'worker bees' rather than the Generals, Kings and politicians. The story absolutely rings with authenticity. This book is as close to a time machine taking you to Southern England in May 1944 as you'll ever find.
    Any additional comments?
The story is compelling, poignant, and a bit sad. The books shows the listener the heroism, camaraderie, and glory of a just war, but it equally shows the terrible human cost. The characters come to life, the performance is superb, the story is original. Highly recommended.
Not Nevil Shute's best, but still good
What did you like best about The Breaking Wave? What did you like least?
The parts about WWII were well written and convincing.
If youve listened to books by Nevil Shute before, how does this one compare?
I think it's best to start with A Town like Alice, which is really great. The Breaking Wave is good but just not up to that level.
What about Patrick Tulls performance did you like?
    Everything.

Without food or money and with her future tied to the fate of the seasons tobacco crop, Annalaura struggles to raise her four children. When help comes in the form of an amorous landowner, who is she to turn it - and him - away?
In this remarkable first novel, as bracingly original as it is exquisitely rendered, Francine Howard tells a moving story of American desire and ambition and the tragic, slippery boundaries of race under Jim Crow.
    Critic Reviews:
"Based on a true family story, this haunting first novel admirably revisits a painful time in history. Too often historical novels about women indulge in anachronistic explorations of feminism, but this novel admirably avoids that trap and instead portrays realistic characters dealing with their difficult lot in life. Well-written
Interesting for those who don't know much about the realities of Jim Crow. As the female descendant of slaves, this book was difficult for me to finish. But that didn't detract from its excellence in detailing the psychological impact the legacy of slavery had on everyone - White men, Black women, and White women. Narration was better in dialogue, but still really good.
An incredible tale of overwhelming adversity
This story was spellbinding. I was glued to every moment praying for redemption for this poor family.
A word of warning-the sensual content is quite explicit, not apprpriate for the young listener.
    Love or crops
A young field worker is struggling to feed her four children as her husband, a womanising gambler, has supposedly gone off to earn them more money, but seems unlikely to return. The land owner is curious as to whether her husband is home, and if his crops will be sown in time; and sadly for the young mum, he's noticed how pretty she is too.

    Classic Tale With A Twist
Whay an interesting way to tell the classic tale of the 47 Ronin! LJR gives us a twisty, plot, interesting characters and involved plotlines that keep the pages turning. I enjoyed the narration as well.
    A Great Listen
I thought this book was great, I was a little apprehensive as it is the first book in the series that I have listened to (or read) and I was not sure if I was going to jump into the middle of a story. But you do not need to have read the previous books to enjoy this one. Any details you need are quickly filled in, and the story is stand alone for the most part. Anyone who has an interest in the 47 Ronin will enjoy this book. I found the narrator to be mostly excellent, although there were one or two voices I cringed at. Otherwise I would have given her 5 instead of 4 stars.
Strong story in the series, performance ok.
This was a very strong novel in the series. I would have prefered a different narrator, but can't put my finger on why. It was a fine narration but nothing special. I would recommend geting it for the story, The narration is just a matter of my preference, but others may find it exceptional.
    Excellent Rowland
Great story and narration. The best so far of the series. Strongly recommended if you like the genre.

This is the third book in the 'Blackwood' saga. For three generations, members of the Blackwood family served the Royal Marines with distinction. With the outbreak of World War I, at last comes Jonathan Blackwoods turn to carry the family name into battle.
But as the young marines embark for the Dardanelles, and a new kind of warfare, it dawns on them that the days of scarlet coats and an unchanging tradition of honour and glory have gone forever. First in Gallipoli, and two years later in Flanders, comes their horrifying initiation into a wholesale slaughter for which no training could ever have prepared them.
Caught up in the savagery of a conflict beyond any officers control, Blackwoods future rests on the horizon - the dark lip of the trench which was the last fateful sight for so many.
    Members Reviews:
    The Best of the Blackwoods
The Horizon is the third of Douglas Reemans novels about the Blackwood family and their trading of service in the Royal Marines. I have read all the Blackwood novels and the Horizon is the one I keep returning to. The story focuses on Johnathon Blackwood and his inner struggle to be the leader that his men and the Royal
Marine high command expect him to be. Although he lives with the inner turmoil of serving in a war that he believe is a futile waste of lives, Johnathon carries on because it is his duty to led. The book is broken into two parts. The first part deals with the Gallipoli campaign and as Australian I was fascinated by the description of the bloody campaign from a British point of view and I believe this is the strongest part of the novel. The second half becomes something of a love story where our hero recovering from the scars of the Gallipoli (both physical and psychological) is called upon to lead a Marine Battalion during the Battle of 3rd Ypres in 1917. He falls in love with a Doctors daughter and the painfully awkward hero manages to win his lady love while leading the trusting souls under his command into the mud and bloody of Ypres. Throughout the novel Reeman keeps the horror and waste of the First World War as the central theme of his novel. While not the best book ever written, it is a novel I enjoy and have listened to several times over the years and I strong;y recommend it to any students of the First
    World War.
    Reeman does it again.
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
    Tells a forgotten story.
What did you like best about this story?
The Royal Marines have very few stories written about them. The series covers this family of Marines through generations. The brutality of World War 1 has been forgotten by most. This book is not anti-war but it does make you realize the incredible loss war imposes on a country.

    ALONZO
This should have been a great book, for me it wasn't indeed I didn't finish it., tedious in my view discribes it best. It doged about different time frames without to much effort in connection, to many characters that played little part in what should have been a plot. For me the only saving grace was the narrator but he couldn't save this book. On the whole a waste of a good credoit
    Where is Jeff Harding?
It is an excellent book in the Bernie Gunter series, but what happened to Jeff Harding? His American accent fitted the cynical 'film-noir-ish' character of the books. This narrator does OK, but his accent is too English (though I think he is Canadian).
Another good Bernie Gunther book, however...
I had waited in anticipation for this book, having listened to the whole series in sequence again and was rather disapointed to discover Jeff Harding wasn't narrating. Jeff Harding is Bernie Gunther.
This change equates to replacing John Thaw as Inspector Morse half way through a series.
This ruined my first listen, but on a second listen I enjoyed the story but it was soured by the change of narrator.
However if this is your first venture into the life and times of Bernie Gunther I imagine it would be a pretty good listen.
I hope Jeff Harding is reinstated for the final book.
    Monotonous narration.
Paul Hecht should be tried for crimes against Bernie Gunther! His drawl is so monotonous that (when one actually decipher that it is indeed Bernie who is talking), his wise cracks fall flat. A serious crime indeed. surprises me that narrators of this quality attract payment from anyone other than the institute of insomniacs. He has ruined this series for me. I fear I will have to return this book and read it myself instead.
So disappointed. Others in this series were 5*
I am so disappointed. In the story but worst the narration and production.
I have adored the Bernie Gunther series. The dry cynical man whose off-centre morality and intelligence created a believable 3D person. The last twists in this plot were so out of character and betrayed so many previous incidents within the series. Not only did it not ring true But I dislike Bernie Gunther now.
It is not that Bernie Gunther ran out of steam but the author.
Then there was the appalling narration. Jeff Harding was a master craftsman-accents, characters and ACTING.
Paul Hecht sounded bored and monotone. From the sublime to the ridiculous.
But worst was the production standard. It sounded worse than when I used to tape The Top 40 on my old tape recorder. It sounded like the narrator was clicking his false teeth in and out at the end of every chapter or heavy breathing that made me question which genre this was.
I've spent a very happy 8 weeks with Bernie Gunther but now I don't know if I have the courage to risk further disappointment.

    Publisher's Summary:
Winner of the Best Picture Oscar 2011 Award
One man saved the British Royal Family in the first decades of the 20th century amazingly, he was an almost unknown, and certainly unqualified, speech therapist called Lionel Logue, whom one newspaper in the 1930s famously dubbed The Quack who saved a King.
Logue wasnt a British aristocrat or even an Englishman he was a commoner and an Australian to boot. Nevertheless it was the outgoing, amiable Logue who single-handedly turned the famously nervous, tongue-tied, Duke of York into the man who was capable of becoming King. The Kings Speech is the previously untold story of the extraordinary relationship between Logue and the haunted young man who became King George VI, drawn from Logues unpublished personal diaries. They throw extraordinary light on the intimacy of the two men and the vital role the Kings wife, the late Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, played in bringing them together to save her husbands reputation and his career as King.
    Critic Reviews:
The King's Speech is the compelling story of how speech therapist Lionel Logue helped the man who didn't want to be king cope with his stutter and make inspirational speeches to a nation at war, is utterly compelling, drawn from history and, more importantly, from Logue's own archives and diaries. Jamie Glover's reading, using a remarkable and unforced range of accents, is perfectly pitched. (Kati Nicholl, Daily Express)
    Members Reviews:
Slow at the beginning, engaging at the end!
The book is great! A very informative tale of the British King and his story... Compared to the movie, I definitely prefer the book as it has more details and catches way more information. Besides the movie begins late on the book, and ends earlier...
    A must read (or hear)!
    An Excellent Compassionate Tale
This is an excellent story brought to life by exactly the right type of narrator. The movie is very good but like all movies it shortens the actual tale, this book gives you all the "back story" of Lionel Logue and the origins of the King's speech problems. The presenter has a variety of vocal tones that subtly suggest each important character it is a fascinating insight into a particular family in a time of crisis. It is a pleasure to listen to this audiobook. A great listen for anyone that enjoys history, intrigue and politics of a particular era.
    Enjoyable and informative
This was my first audible audiobook, and was most enjoyable. The story itself, while quite factual, never became dry or boring, and the narration was of a high standard. The narrator added to the story, and did not 'get in the way' of it. Highly recommended for anyone interested in 20th Century history.
Better than the movie and it was good.
So much more detail and background than the movie. I'd read it again if there weren't so many other great books out there!
Same title, but not the same story as the film
    Any additional comments?
Don't be misled by the title and image of the audiobook. It isn't the same as the film.
The audiobook covers a longer time frame, and reveals Leonard Logue as a different character to that portrayed by Geoffrey Rush in the film.

    He needs to slow down!
This was an interesting book and had lots of elements of appeal. BUT when the author had the bright idea to narrate his own work he should have taken a course (as if there is one!) in how to approach the task. While his voice was all right and character differinciation was quite good .... he was ridiculously fast in the reading. The hardest of all - and I nearly stopped listening over this glaring issue - there were no pauses, not even the slightest hint, between sections!
When one scene is over and the P.O.V. changes as well as the action, there is a break in the text. For a good reason. At these points in this narration the story thread is snapped and it is a chore to catchup to the pointofview sift. Slow down for gosh sakes and respect your ( readers) listeners. The break neck speed of the entire presentation was not a good experience and a shame the book was therefore disappointing. I have listened to many recorded books and the best of them present the material with listeners in mind; not as if it's all a bit of a bore and has to be gotten through like an express train.
I do want to add some comments about the book itself. It's obvious the author did a ton of research which is an admirable dedication to his subject. He also has a great imagination and invented many interesting situations and lots of action scenes. The last part of the book was a bit over the top with wild nonsense in all directions. But the story lines were all tied up I n the end and the historical elements were satisfying.

This audio book is truly an intriguing work of historical fiction! As the story develops, the author's jovial voice quickly draws me into the lives of his many characters. I'm able to imagine what life might have been like in turn of the century Nebraska, with engaging and very likable characters such as Bud and Anna Marie.
