Fantastic Performance, Hilarious Story

This is a pleasure to listen to, a perfect marriage of narrator and book. Bill Roberts' performance is top notch Folksy and funny; varied and truly inside the story.

Cinder Bottom will bring to mind Charles Portis: ne'er do wells, card-sharps and prostitutes populate the book. The story has a way of feeling like it'll go off the rails at any moment with equal measures of wit and violence, but it stays on track with confident writing and taut storytelling.

A Good Read

Taught, well-produced mystery with appealing protagonist and good command of historical detail. In a field crowded with mysteries set during the Third Reich, this book holds a place in the top tier. While I am not sure I will reread it, I enjoyed it thoroughly. The author is informed and not self-indulgent.

very good review of 1938/1939 period, well researched, one to read at a quick pace, appears totally plausable, somewhat disturbed by brief ending but true to overall plot.

Riveting book

Even though I know what the Nazis did in Europe and WWII happened, I kept hoping for history to be changed while reading this book.

Good story about Berlin in 1939. Before the war began. Had an interesting story line and was well written.

Captivating

The stories are each self-contained, but are all related (in the manner of the stories in Olive Kitterech). The book can be enjoyed as a novel or as a series of short stories. Either way it is rewarding.

Originally published in 1910.

The story is as much fun as an old 1930's movie farce or a Chevy Chase movie. The humor is only partly from the snarks and wiseassery, but situational as well. Pretty much along the lines of "if anything can go wrong--it will".

Take a group of friends of the privileged class with good intentions (but no one with brains except the main protagonist) in a big old house in NYC. Add in a cantankerous aunt and a visiting civil engineer, a hastily concocted scheme crafted of good intentions, enforced medical quarantine and no servants, paparazzi, missing jewels, and you have the basic elements. Well worth the read!!

Karen Commins gives a fantastic audio performance as narrator! She has all of the audio emotions down perfectly, and it's easy to know which *character* is verbalizing.

Lacking

Set in the 1930s its the tale of a dinner party gone bad. Apparently I dont read enough historical pieces as to me this one didnt seem to stay in one era. I didnt really care for the story as it seemed to portray most of the characters as too stupid to catch on to a ruse.

I was provided an audio version of this book in exchange for an honest review. The narration was good. The narrator did a good job with what she had to work with.

Based on this book I would not read others by this author.

Period Piece and a well written classic

This is a historical piece and is in the public domain. Society has rules for everything. The writing technique and wording is a little older than I prefer, but it was still worth the time listening. I think I will listen to more of her works.

The narrator is good and does society voices well. Her voice was smooth and I enjoyed this piece. Good Job.

Snarky in a good and funny way

I was surprised at this book's humor. It seemed very modern humor but set (and written) in the early 1900's. It was very clever. I actually did laugh aloud a couple of times and had a smile on my face through most of it. I never knew the 'victim role' could be so funny. I was also surprised about the role of women in this book. They rocked! It is certainly not the liberated view of women today but there were no shrinking violets.

The narrator was very good. The book lagged a little at times - the chipper pace got a bit sluggish here and there but overall it was an easy and very entertaining listen.

How Fiction Sometimes Can Draw Us To Truth

Having read âThe Last Nephilimâ by William Guy I was drawn to read his sequel, âCaphtorim: Book Two of The Last Nephilimâ and I am glad I did.

For some reason, I understood the first volume better after reading the first few chapters of âCaphtorim.â I also discovered when reaching the end Book Two that the author is planning another sequel and so we will end up with a Nephilim Triology.

In Book One, Bill Guy uses fiction to explain how early man switched from worshipping one God to a society of worshipping many gods. In Book Two, the author offers his explanation of how Adam and Eveâs son and grandchildren ended up marrying others without having to commit incest. Very interesting. In the introduction, Guy offers three to four theories of how this happened and chooses one basic explanation for his novel.

All scripture tells us is that the members of the Sons of Man were drawn to members of the Sons of God who were living on earth, and vice versa, and married each other. This continue far enough down the bloodline until humans could marry other humans without committing incest and weakening the human race. The apocryphal Book of Enoch offers more details and a better explanation of this process.

Basically, either God purposely placed heavenly beings on earth to be available to marry humans, or expelled heavenly beings for disobedience in heaven or they became available for to marry humans. In either case, they the heavenly beings were evil who worshipped other gods and led humans away from God. There is the thought that these heavenly beings were so made that they could reproduce only with humans and not with each other.

I loved Nightingale by Fiona McIntosh

I loved Nightingale by Fiona McIntosh, I read it very slowly and enjoyed every page. I live in South Australia, it can be dry and very hot. The book kept me guessing until the end and did give an accurate insight into world war one. Nothing more romantic than a nurse and a light horseman.

It was interesting to here about World War One and sad to know off all the losses but made me smile to know how much they care about the Turkish lad

Two sides of the Anzac story

I've yet to read a Fiona McIntosh book I didn't enjoy. This one was another topical tale given this year of centenary of ANZAC. It was good to have the story encompass characters on both sides of the conflict. Much like Kenneally's Daughters of Mars, and Anastasios' The Water Diviner, these stories resonated with me as a nurse and an Australian.

Romantic and historical

It took about 1/2 of the book to really gain my interest but once it did I couldn't put it down! It's emotional yet inspirational. The bonds of love and friendship are the unbreakable bonds that hold these complex characters together through the most difficult circumstances.

Yet another wonderful novel by Fiona McIntosh. She creates fabulous characters the reader comes to love, while creating a place and time the reader becomes immersed in. Her novels are a full experience and I can't wait for the next one. Thank you Fiona ... from another Fiona.

Get your giggle on with this mystery!

Two people who are called to their professions find murder, mayhem and more complications to life in the Carolinas. Personal histories are sprinkled throughout, as are laugh-out-loud humor and all-too-real dilemmas. Beginning with the Christmas dinner from The Pit, complete with awful family members from Anywhere, USA, and moving along thru helping a friend, the wedding from Bedlam and a body count that could soon include our main character, you don't want to put it down, but gasp and keep on snickering. Every bit as good as the first Mount Moriah mystery, and hope that more come soon!

Holly does a great job of adding to the liveliness of each character and reflecting the emotional state of each (including the snarkiness in the mind).

This was a gift from a friend.

Why not write women smarter?

My title says it all. This is not only about this book. I'm just getting tired of book heroines constantly making dumb, choices. It all works out in the end but it gets old.

Welcome back Lindsay Harding

I'd enjoyed the first book in this series and so was looking forward to reading A Death in Duck, and I'll say right now, I would advise reading "A Death in Mount Moriah" first or you will miss out a bit on the back story.

Lindsay is a hospital chaplain, but don't expect any "holier than thou" heroine here, she can be as petulant, stubborn and emotionally fallible as the rest of us. Lindsay had a very strange and tough upbringing, and to say that her family is odd is an understatement. She sure has a lot on her plate with her work and relationships, even her work colleagues are rather an unusual bunch. Added to this, Lindsays' fiancé has the perfect woman for a mother and an over the top dog crazy sister, Lyndsays' attempts to impress them on their first meeting goes comically awry.

For those who have read the first book and are familiar with Lindsays history, be prepared for some shocking revelations, amid the murder and the mayhem many old family secrets rise to the surface. I was actually quite shocked at one event!

Not only does Lindsay have to deal with her own family, her friends are making huge demands upon her good nature, and all the while, with the body count rising, her relationship with Warren is becoming very strained.

I didn't think this book as humorous as the first, which had made me laugh aloud and this was a bit of a disappointment, but the storyline is quite complex and clever, I enjoyed it very much.

Another wonderful narration by Holly Adams who certainly had no easy task with these diverse characters, yet each one is well differentiated.
