    Publisher's Summary:
A Dead Man in Deptford re-imagines the riotous life and suspicious death of Christopher Marlowe.
Poet, lover, and spy, Marlowe must negotiate the pressures placed upon him by theatre, Queen, and country.
Burgess brings this dazzling figure to life and pungently evokes Elizabethan England.
    Critic Reviews:
"One of the most productive, imaginative and risk-taking of writers... It is a clever, sexually explicit, fast-moving, full blooded yarn" (Irish Times)

    Dull and uninspiring
This book is without interest. From the start it fails to engage. The characterisation and construction are poor and very amateurish.

A very interesting historical novel about an immigrant doctor to the US during the era of the Civil War
Noah Gordon has written at least two books about the Doctors Cole. "Der Medicus" was the first one. He seems to base their knowledge of medicine to fit the era in which they were living. I love how he weaves the story line into the historical events of the time. I have this book twice, "Der Medicus" three times. There is always something new to learn, enjoy, think about, which is my way of rating a book that I like.
    Spitzenbuch

    Shardlake goes to war...
Summer, 1545. England is at war. Henry VIII's invasion of France has gone badly wrong, and a massive French fleet is preparing to sail across the Channel . . .Meanwhile, Matthew Shardlake is given an intriguing legal case by an old servant of Queen Catherine Parr.
Asked to investigate claims of monstrous wrongs' committed against his young ward, Hugh Curteys, by Sir Nicholas Hobbey, Shardlake and his assistant Barak journey to Portsmouth. There, Shardlake also intends to investigate the mysterious past of Ellen Fettiplace, a young woman incarcerated in the Bedlam. A Dark and Enthralling blend of fact and fiction
What did you like most about Heartstone?
This is another of the Shardlake tales with its mixture of fiction set against a background of actual events that are blended seamlessly and engagingly.
This installment in the saga deals with gender issues and one of the great tragedies of British naval history: the loss of the Mary Rose. The account of the final hours of the vessel are harrowing and the reader feels there with Shardlake aboard the doomed vessel and her crew.Several narrative threads are brought together by the end of the novel and the story of Ellen, the woman confined in Bedlam is resolved.
While there is happiness for some characters there is deep tragedy for others and Matthew Shardlake finds himself confronting the seemingly invulnerable Richard Rich yet again.
The characters are fully rounded and the pace never falters. Highly recommended to lovers of fine fiction.
Have you listened to any of Steven Crossleys other performances? How does this one compare?
Steven Crossley's narration is excellent as he captures the male characters superbly, however, his attempts with the female characters are less successful, but perhaps it is setting expectations too high.
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
The book kept me enthralled from start to finish.
    Any additional comments?
I can't wait to hear the next installment!
    Stubborn Shardlake
I felt like shouting at Shardlake with this story (I've read them all) because he's so exasperating in his pursuit of an historic truth relating to a woman in Bedlam who thinks she loves him. Yeah, I know...sounds flimsy.
A few more things get thrown into the pot during this long tale but it does rather drag in places. Steven Crossley does his usual good job of narration but should, in my opinion, consult his dentist about the clacking sounds he makes from time to time. It's distracting but could be fixed.
I enjoy the escapist side of reading the Shardlake stories and the background historical detail is extremely good, but this isn't his best.
In fact, if you want the best of C.J.

    Language: English
    Release date: 10-13-14
    Publisher: Hodder & Stoughton
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 3 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
The hill people and the Mexicans arrived on the same day. It was a Wednesday, early in September, 1952. The Cardinals were five games behind the Dodgers with three weeks to go, and the season looked hopeless.
The cotton, however, was waist-high to my father, over my head, and he and my grandfather could be heard before supper whispering words that were seldom heard. It could be a "good crop".
Thus begins the new novel from John Grisham, a story inspired by his own childhood in rural Arkansas. The narrator is a farm boy named Luke Chandler, age seven, who lives in the cotton fields with his parents and grandparents in a little house that's never been painted. The Chandlers farm 80 acres that they rent, not own, and when the cotton is ready they hire a truckload of Mexicans and a family from the Ozarks to help harvest it.
For six weeks they pick cotton, battling the heat, the rain, the fatigue, and, sometimes, one another. As the weeks pass Luke sees and hears things no seven-year-old could possibly be prepared for, and finds himself keeping secrets that not only threaten the crop but will change the lives of the Chandlers forever.
A Painted House is a moving story of one boy's journey from innocence to experience.
    Critic Reviews:
"...prose as clean and strong as any Grisham has yet laid downand a drop-dead evocation of a time and place that mark this novel as a classic slice of Americana." (Publishers Weekly)
    Members Reviews:
    did not enjoy the narrator
struggled to finish this book, not one of Gresham 's best and the narrator does it no good.
    Great writer with great characters
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes. Grisham is one of few great modern writers who maintains quality writing with many varied themes. Not just legal jurist themes but baseball, Italy or in this case a poor cotton farming family struggling through the picking season, divergent migrant and local hired hands and family differences. Many modern writers seem to get lazy with their success in writing-following old themes, well worn characters and shorter novels
What other book might you compare A Painted House to, and why?
Grapes of Wrath. Patiently builds characters of interest and depth to whom you have a genuine sympathy
Which character as performed by David Lansbury was your favourite?
    The boy protagonist
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No - too big and rich-enjoyed coming back to it like an old friend

    Genres: Fiction, Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
In the summer of 1914, the world erupted in what was at the time called The Great War. Machine guns, multi-ton bombs, poison gas, changed the face what war had been like for thousands of years. Rendered it a hell like nothing the world had ever seen. In a single battle, The Somme 1916, over a million soldiers were killed or wounded. By the time it ended four years and four months later more than 16 million people lay dead, empires collapsed and national borders had been realigned. It was thought that after such inhumane cruelty and barbarity as was seen on the battlefields of France, Belgium, Turkey, and other lands spanning the globe, that the world had come its senses. That humanity had finally fought The War to End All Wars. A short generation later The War to End All Wars was renamed, World War One. Because mankind had apparently learned nothing.
This short story is not a history. It is not a precise representation of facts, places, dates, or large-scale events. It is merely the story of the First World War through the eyes of an innocent 19-year-old Canadian boy from the prairies of Alberta. He and the youthful soldiers with him had no concept of the scale of what they were involved in, no clue as to what lay in the heads of the generals and politicians that sent the orders down. He didn't read the newspapers, didn't philosophize on the meaning of it all. He had no "big picture" as the history books paint for us today. All he understood was that he had to obey his orders and stop the Hun. The only picture he saw was one of mud and sweat and rats and blood. He was a soldier whose orders had called his unit out of the comforts of Paris, and sent them to a field near a little Belgian town called Paschendale.
    Members Reviews:
    Heavy-hitting, yet very moving
What made the experience of listening to 1917 - A Short Story the most enjoyable?
Hearing the first-person perspective of the nameless soldier, recounting his terrifying experience on the front-line. This grounded the story and made it so real for the listener.
Who was your favorite character and why?
The nameless soldier, simply because he was the central character, and that we could relate to him.
Which character as performed by Basil Sands was your favorite?
Again, the nameless soldier. Basil's first-person narrative made him so engaging and he was very well portrayed.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    Yes.
    Any additional comments?
Very well-written and performed, yet it did have a tendency to go overboard at times. Not for the fainthearted this story, yet it pays its respects to the fallen heroes in moving fashion. Recommended.

    Members Reviews:
Superb reading of an awesome book.
Jeffery Renard Allen is a remarkably eloquent writer and his novel Blind Tom involves vivid characters in the chaotic times surrounding the Civil War. I, however, found his book hard to read because he didn't use quotation marks. But Kevin Free's reading was so well done, with excellent voices for the many colorful characters. This was a great partnership of a great writer and a great reader.

    Nice work
If you enjoy reading Roman history mixed with a great story you're going to like this book. Mr. Foreman has a touch and style that is easily amoung the best of the current field of established writers. The books have a very subtle way of pullig you into the story and before you know it you've read the whole book. Make sure you turn off the phone as when you begin reading you won't stop. A rare quality indeed.

    Top stuff, as usual.
For a good look into the Roman military establishment and
Roman culture this can be highly recommended. Get it today, you won't be disappointed.
    Very Tepid
This is a craftsman like product that fails to display what should be the hallmark of a historical novel and that it is that makes you "feel" the world you are entering. This could have occurred in any era, just change the names. Not bad, not exceptional just ok.
    fantastic read for escape readers
