A Great Perspective

This is an exceptional history course. First, don't take this course unless you already have a basic knowledge of American history. The professor assumes a base level of knowledge so that he can go straight into the story. He starts at the beginning of American history and goes all the way to George W. Bush. The twist is that the familiar history of America is retold through our nation's approach to international affairs and diplomatic relations. The professor does an excellent job staying organized and telling a comprehensive and enlightening story. My one knock is that the professor gets a little too opinionated as he reaches more modern history. However, he keeps this minimal enough not to distract from the overall quality of the course. I gained new perspectives on historic events, which significantly deepened my understanding of topics that I already knew. I am extremely glad that I took this course and highly recommend it.

FSOT Prep

Very thorough and enlightening. Prof. Stoler has an artful approach to crafting lectures. By continually reinforcing chapter points with previous course material he underlines themes and notable ideologies that help the student understand the motives of various administrations and their posture to world affairs as well as help him form critical analysis of those admin. I'm studying for the FSOT and I consider these lectures essential to my studies.

Very well prepared and delivered.

I am extremely impressed with Dr. Stoler. He sifted through over 240 years of history and presents the most important individuals and events. He links everything to the purpose of the course, but is not afraid of taking a little time to give valuable breif background to explain events.

To explain, after each sentence there is a 1-3 sec pause, all background noises and static cease and the \"dead air\" interrupts adding a level discontinuity to lecture. My assumption is that a noise gate was used on the mic or the production engineer used an automated noise reduction that doesn't work well with spoken word. Great book and easy read!

Good overview

This book presents a good overview of what went on in Salem in 1692. Although we may never know exactly the details of why and how this ugly part of our history occurred, we can be sure that it would not have occurred had not a large part of the population been convinced that supernatural beings actually exist and are capable of influencing what goes in the natural world.

Wonderful!

I ordered this book to use as the central text in a unit on the Salem Witch Trials and Nonfiction. It's a wonderful, compelling read that is sure to capture my students' attention. This book is also packed with information; I learned more than I could ever want to know about the Salem Witch Trials. A truly fabulous read!

Witches and Woe

Witches in Salem? This impelling book by Marc Aronson is about the 1692 Salmen, MA, witch trials. This is an interesting and good read. Wish I had read in when I was in school and studying early America.

Great for any age

If the title or subject appeal to you at all, you'll probably like this book. I know it's geared toward a younger crowd, but I read it in my early thirties and loved it. Very interesting and engaging description of what may really have brought about the Salem Witch Trials.

Excellent, well rounded

I have listened to this book over 3 times since I bought it a few weeks ago. I listened before a recent to trip to Northern Florida, again while on the trip, and again when I came home. It has fascinating details about the state history and touches on many aspects: ethnic and race relations, politics, skirmishes, geology, cultural history, geography, tourism, etc. It also focuses on different parts of the state so you get good representation. Good for general listening as well as for trips.

Florida without the fluff

Attacks the common beliefs on what the history of Florida has been and uses that as a air up call for all of us. He deals with everything from Ponce De Leon not really searching for the fountain of youth to the negative financial and civil rights impact of Disney World on the state. I didn't not agree with all of the author's conclusions but it was a very thought provoking read.

Bias to the extreme!

T.D Allman's book was more about putting down Florida history instead of telling it. If a event does not fit his opinions it is backwards and proves that rich white men are evil. He only shows one side of the story. A good example is the giving away of land to rich men in the 19th century. Yes millions of acres were given away, but look at Illinois, and Nebraska during the railroad era and besides Florida was giving them swamp land.

Good starter on Conquistadors

If you love Conquistador history as I do start out with this book as it is a good primer on the subject. Then follow it with 'Conquistador' by Buddy Levy and 'The Last Days of the Incas' by Kim MacQuarrie. Both books can be found on Audible.com and go into much more depth. After that go on Amazon and pick up the hard copy of 'Fernando Cortes His Five Letters of Relation to the Emperor Charles V'. This is a two volume set that are the actual dispatches from Cortes to the King. I picked my copy up for $20. Lastly read the 641page 'The Conquest of the Incas' by John Hemming available in hardcover and paperback cheap from lots of used book sellers... just do a search.

Would you listen to Conquistadors again? Why?

Maybe not again, but it has inspired me to learn more about the Inca's Aztecs and Mesa-American cultures. Fascinating.

In the later part of the book the author describes the yearlong trek of several ship wrecked Conquistadors that were the archetype of "going native".

Who was your favorite character and why?

The author spent the most time on George Ashby, so I gleaned the most information about the history of the island through his lifetime.

Would you be willing to try another one of Lisa Reneé Pittss performances?

No! I found the narrator to be annoying and amateurish. Mispronunciations of words including nascent, miscegenation and (gasp!) cavalry interrupted the experience for me. The book was well-written, but the narrator did a bit of a hack job with her vocal representation of it. If I see an audio book with her name on it, Ill make a point of not purchasing it.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Yes. The author created a virtual Barbados that I felt very comfortable in.

who else but General Curtis Le May. He understood we were at war,and there are no half measures in war. He lead from the front and used every resource made available to him to bring down the Japanese empire from the air. Much criticized for his ruthless attitude of round the clock firebombing of japan which resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of civilians but anything less would of been half measure. His attitude of ill take the job as long as everyone is clear im here to kill the enemy non stop 24 hours a day 7 days a week forever if necessary if that sounds to harsh or maniacal Get somebody else!! I fight to win.
