    Green Cherries
While reading Mike's book, I found myself privy to a part of his life that was part confession and the other "just a bowl of cherries." (Perhaps green ones that I remember from those flaming dishes at a favorite Chinese restaurant on Rt. 18) I almost found myself taking a pen and commenting on his experiences, directly on his pages that were too familiar to my own, but perhaps I should save those words for a more suitable space.

Mike has a wonderful, warm and witty way of bringing the everyday to life. In reading Your Brain on Shamrocks so many of the day to day happenings of growing up in an Irish American family play out - many 'laugh out loud' moments! A really terrific read!

Don't have to be Irish to appreciate this book of wonderfully funny stories. Couldn't wait for the next one to follow
    Great read!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is well written - at times poignant, always hilarious.
    Very enjoyable
"This Is Your Brain on Shamrocks" was a delightful book; clever, colourful, charming, and endearing, Mike Farragher blends wit and humour in the stories of his family and the Irish ancestry which formed his background.

Horror with Hope - Important Reading
This book opened my eyes to many aspects of the sex industry, starting with the very fact that most "women" being bought and sold are actually underage girls (some not even teenagers) who have been forced into selling sex, first by a need to survive, then usually by violent means by the person taking the money. Rachel Lloyd weaves her own story in and out of the stories of the many girls she has helped, also providing stats and research. She addresses the pain and victimization of these girls by their pimps, johns, police, and even society that does not see them as real people. Somehow, she manages to tell all of this and leave the reader with hope along with immense admiration for her and the girls she serves.
A memoir filled with hope, desire, knowledge; brilliantly written; attention getting; a memoir you canât put down.
Rachel begins this memoir by explaining that she is the Executive Director of a Program named GEMS (Girls Educational and Mentoring Services). The program is designed to help girls and young women who have been recruited and trafficked into the commercial sex industry. GEMS is a place where the girls can come and receive counseling from caseworkers; learn different skills such as (poetry, cooking, boxing group); use computers or just simply hang out.
Rachel has a unique story of her own because she used to be a âCommercially Sexually Exploited Youth.â Rachel knows firsthand of the things that happened to a girl while they are in âThe Life.â As Rachel shares her story from the age of 13 until her mid-thirties; she explains the life of a trafficked child in rich detail. Rachel explains of key phrases and terminology used by the girls and those used by law enforcement. Rachel explains that politicians, officials, police and many other people have biases towards these girls. Rachel also explains several scenarios that would enlist a girl to be sexually exploited. Rachel gives us several stories of the girls that has entered and left the GEMS program. Rachel describes how pimps recruit young girls and also how they treat the same girls badly. Rachel explains how the media can affect the outcome of a case and how much help a person can get on a case.

Nine-year-old Archie and his five-year-old sister, Bobbi, are taken into emergency police protective custody after an incident of domestic violence at their family home.

Bobbi reacts violently, lashing out and throwing herself around. Rosie has never seen a child as young a Bobbi behaving so viciously, but it is Archie she is most concerned about as the weeks go by.
After a worrying incident at school, Archie tearfully discloses the truth - a shocking secret that has left him and his sister traumatised. Horrified at what she learns, Rosie is determined to help the young siblings find a forever home that will provide them with the love and care they deserve.

    powerful and full of emotion.
This was another good book by this author, they are very hard to read because of the problems that a lot of the children in her care have to go threw but it's always heart warming to read about the care and love she shows them. Rosie always fights to do what is best for the children in her care and is determined to find out the truth so she can help them get the love they deserve. Bobby and Archie are 9 and five years old and are removed from there home after social services become concerned for there safety. Bobby throws tantrums and has regular melt downs that makes Rosie shocked to see such a young child behave in the way she does. However as the weeks progress it's Archie her brother who Rosie becomes more concerned about. after he finally reveals the secret of there past, Rosie is determined to make sure they find that forever home where they can be loved. Rosie is a great foster carer who does everything she can for the children in her care even sometimes going beyond the call of duty. The reader handles the subject matter very sensitively and reads the books very well. Looking forward to hopeful future books by this author.
    Good but not great
I love Rosie's writing, but the ending of this book felt incredibly rushed. One minute everything hangs precariously in the balance, the next it's a happy ending for all involved. It was the first time one of her books disappointed me.

    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 2 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
From the author of the best-selling memoir North of Normal comes the harrowing story of a past that won't let go, and one woman's attempt to put her life back together after everything falls apart.
In her best-selling memoir North of Normal, Cea wrote with grace about her unconventional childhood - her early years living in a tipi in Alberta with her pot-smoking, free-loving counterculture family. But her struggles do not end when she leaves her family at the age of 13 to become a model. Honest and daring, Nearly Normal reveals the many ways that Cea's unconventional childhood continues to reverberate through the years.
At the age of 37, Cea has built a life that looks like the normal one she craved as a child - husband, young son, beautiful house, enviable career. But her carefully art-directed world is about to crumble around her. As she confronts the death of her still-young mother, the disintegration of her second marriage and the demise of her business, all within a few months, she finally faces the need to look at her past to make sense of her present.
The Globe and Mail says "Person's best gifts as a writer are her memory, her knack for knowing when to dig down into the finer details of a scene, and when to pull back." Nearly Normal chronicles the many stories Cea left untold but that needed telling. Settled into a new and much happier life after the release of her first book, she is nonetheless compelled to continue searching for answers about her enigmatic family. She discovers the value in the lessons they taught her, and the power of taking responsibility for her own choices.

He had a rude awakening when he was arrested at the airport in Istanbul trying to board a plane while carrying four pounds of hashish, and given a life sentence. full of good information, and very personal
Engaging, full of good information, and very personal. It's a story of her journey through early adult life and is enjoyable to read. Great look at the Catholic faith, especially for newcomers who also have questions about saints and the Church in general.
    Refreshingly candid!
Ms Campbell has written a refreshingly candid and engaging autobiography using Saints as signposts for significant events in her life. Like other reviewers I could not put this story down. When discussing her problems getting pregnant I wanted to shout the name "Saint Gianna". Suddenly Ms. Campbell mentions Cardinal Raymond Burke who presented her with a Relic of Saint Gianna Beretta Molla. The funny thing is that we were the ones who supplied the relics to then Bishop Burke. This kind of full circle has happened a lot to our Society of Saint Gianna. Anyway, this book is worth your time. I highly recommend it.

The Society of Saint Gianna Beretta Molla
    Exceeded my expectations!
Colleen Carroll Campbell has put together a wonderful memoir of her life, and sharing how the women saints were instrumental in the challenges. She has given us a glimpse of herself, allowing us to feel her deepest feelings and desires, joys and struggles in both her personal life and work. What a gift of writing she has been given; we are blessed that she has shared it with us.
A Book Where Faith and Life Meet.
For anyone asking how the Catholic faith can bring meaning and strength to the challenges of ordinary life, My Sisters the Saints is the book. Campbell's sincere and humble narrative of her journey of faith as she faces career choices, infertility, and her father's terminal illness will help many people find God in the midst of their daily struggles too.

    Publisher's Summary:
Soon to be a television series titled Rise, starring Josh Radnor, Auli'i Cravalho, and Rosie Perez - the incredible and true story of an extraordinary drama teacher who has changed the lives of thousands of students and inspired a town.
Why would the multimillionaire producer of Cats, The Phantom of the Opera, and Miss Saigon take his limo from Manhattan to the struggling former steel town of Levittown, Pennsylvania, to see a high school production of Les Misérables?
To see the show performed by the astoundingly successful theater company at Harry S Truman High School, run by its legendary director, Lou Volpe. Broadway turns to Truman High when trying out controversial shows such as Rent and Spring Awakening before they move on to high school theater programs across the nation. Volpe's students from this blue-collar town go on to become Emmy-winning producers, entertainment executives, newscasters, and community-theater founders.
Michael Sokolove, a Levittown native and former student of Volpe's, chronicles the drama director's last school years and follows a group of student actors as they work through riveting dramas both on and off the stage. This is a story of an economically depressed but proud town finding hope in a gifted teacher and the magic of theater.
    Members Reviews:
U will be Inspired with a capital "I"
Mr. Sokolove has penned a rousing and hearty portrait of Levittown, PA drama teacher Lou Volpe. Most of us, I think, wish we'd been blessed with a teacher like Mr. Volpe, whose work over 40 years stimulated the impressionable minds of teens and magically transported them to a world of imagination and expansion, while invigorating their parents and inspiring a community that's had its fair share of struggles. It leaves no doubt that teachers have an opportunity to make a difference, to change the world (or at least a small, but significant, part of it).
I wish there a law was on the books requiring that anyone over 30 who thinks our schools don't need to, or even shouldn't, teach the arts, read this splendid and "Incredible True Story of a Brilliant Teacher, a Struggling Town and the Magic of Theater."
Buy and read this book and u will be Inspired with a capital "I."
    Outstanding and Inspiring
As a teacher, I can only hope to inspire students a fraction of the amount Mr. Volpe has. He has truly left a legacy and one can only imagine the far reaching impact of his guidance and inspiration. As a theater fan, I loved reading about the process of staging both the large scale musicals and the smaller, but equally important, plays that Mr. Volpe put together. There are so many gems within each page. I appreciate that along with the craft, students developed true respect for all aspects of theater. It is a testament to Mr. Volpe, his students, and the school district that three large scale, world-famous musicals entrusted their program with piloting the school editions. What an opportunity those students were given! This is a book that any fan of theater, teaching, or inspirational stories should not miss!
    Writing and Story are Terrific
I've had the privilege of seeing several of Mr. Volpe's plays at Truman, and for most years his productions had more meaningful artistic content than many of the productions in professional regional theatre.

    Title: Another Kind of Madness
Subtitle: A Journey Through the Stigma and Hope of Mental Illness

    Narrator: Sean Pratt
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 9 hrs and 9 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-15-17
    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 9 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Families are riddled with untold secrets. But Stephen Hinshaw never imagined that a profound secret was kept under lock and key for 18 years within his family - that his father's mysterious absences, for months at a time, resulted from serious mental illness and involuntary hospitalizations. From the moment his father revealed the truth, during Hinshaw's first spring break from college, he knew his life would change forever.
Hinshaw calls this revelation his "psychological birth". After years of experiencing the ups and downs of his father's illness without knowing it existed, Hinshaw began to piece together the silent, often terrifying history of his father's life - in great contrast to his father's presence and love during periods of wellness. This exploration led to larger discoveries about the family saga, to Hinshaw's correctly diagnosing his father with bipolar disorder, and to his full-fledged career as a clinical and developmental psychologist and professor.
    Critic Reviews:
"This heartfelt memoir shares insights into the effects of mental illness on all involved." (
    Booklist)
    Members Reviews:
    Insightful, heartbreaking, and important
4.5 stars. Excellent blend of family history, medical history, and mental health history. Professor Hinshaw shines an unflinching light upon his family's history of mental illness, how the stigma attached to such mental illness shaped his family and his own life, and how it drove him into his profession in psychology and as a professor. Hinshaw explains evolving attitudes toward mental illness, the needless forced dichotomy between camps that believed it was either wholly biological or wholly environmental (when any treatment would have to admit dual if not various contributing factors), and the often horrible treatment that was the norm in the past. He explores how the stigma of mental illness meant his family hid the periodic disappearances of his own father, never explaining he was in mental health facilities and his mother never getting the support she needed to weather these absences. Hinshaw himself talks about his own struggles with a mind given to obsession and depression, and how learning about his family's history helped him evaluate his own situation and re-evaluate his father's diagnosis (eventually leading to much more effective treatment). A book that everyone should read as we seek to further demolish the stigma and deconstruct the forced silence that surrounds mental health.

Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
This program is read by the author. The never-more-necessary return of one of our most vital and eloquent voices on technology and culture, the author of the seminal Close to the Machine.
The last 20 years have brought us the rise of the Internet, the development of artificial intelligence, the ubiquity of once unimaginably powerful computers, and the thorough transformation of our economy and society. Through it all, Ellen Ullman lived and worked inside that rising culture of technology, and in Life in Code she tells the continuing story of the changes it wrought with a unique, expert perspective.
When Ellen Ullman moved to San Francisco in the early 1970s and went on to become a computer programmer, she was joining a small, idealistic, and almost exclusively male cadre that aspired to genuinely change the world. In 1997, Ullman wrote Close to the Machine, the now classic and still definitive account of life as a coder at the birth of what would be a sweeping technological, cultural, and financial revolution.
Twenty years later, the story Ullman recounts is neither one of unbridled triumph nor a nostalgic denial of progress. It is necessarily the story of digital technology's loss of innocence as it entered the cultural mainstream, and it is a personal reckoning with all that has changed, and so much that hasn't. Life in Code is an essential audiobook toward our understanding of the last 20 years - and the next 20.

If you've worked for a west coast tech firm and want some fun historical perspective -- read this!
Creative storytelling of her personal experiences in the very exciting silicon valley technology industry during fascinating times. Ellen is insightful, intelligent, introspective, funny, witty and really knows how to spin an interesting story. Loved this!
A thought provoking indictment of the new technocratic order
Silicon Valley brands itself as progressive, but really, itâs a less honest Wall Street: a small geographic location dedicated to generating mass amounts of wealth for a small, select group of primarily white men. This book intelligently dissects all the hypocritical intricacies of this world and offers a glimmer of hope in the messiness of humanity, civil society, even the corporeal.
    Five Stars
Excellent insight by a true philosopher of computing.
Wonderful philosophical memoir on the Life in Code
Love the style of the writing and philosophical bent. Many points had me nodding and feeling like she's telling my story in large part (I, too, have a life in code, and Ellen is my spiritual mentor). I'm not finished with the book I may do a follow-up. But I wish I could give it 5 stars. I have to give it 4 because, well, its a view of programming that's from a bygone age where the ideal programmer resembles the electrical engineer. Even the term "Software Engineer" (as opposed to "Computer Scientist") is not really about engineering. Programming is more a liberal art, where survivorship of ideas expressed in code depends largely on a design ethos that puts amenability to change as paramount, not any "single best way" to solve a problem: programming being the first human-computer interaction. I was also saddened to see this myth of meritocracy perpetuated again. There are no meritocracies, only "mirrortocracies", programming being one of the best examples.
