Abrupt Ending!

This book ends so fast that it truly lacks finality. You're listening along and within seconds the whole thing is wrapped up and the listener is left feeling rather empty. You don't really sympathize with any of the characters, especially Kinsey. Also, the sound editing is so choppy that it's hard to pay attention to the dialog. Not Grafton's best.

Sue Grafton can do no wrong!

This is it now, I am all caught up with the series - obviously all read out of order since this is H and the series is up to W.

I adore the Kinsey Milhone character so much; I am going to miss not having her around on a regular basis! Im going from 23 instalments in 6 years, to a new instalment every 2 years.

Will be sad to reach the end.

Not much mystery

This is more of a thriller than a mystery. There's a bit of a surprise at the end, but not much. Everyone knows who-dun-it about a quarter of the way in. Even the action to catch the guy is just stuff that happens, rather than a plan. I enjoyed it some, but not as much as others in this series.

I liked the story but it had a little canned feel

There was a bit of TV format to the book. It was a good storyline and was performed well. The undercover work had more substance than usual. All in all not a waste of time.

Bad Sound Editing

Typical great Sue Grafton story, but the sound editing was terrible. There are long sound gaps between sentences that break the flow of the story. It's very noticable and very irritating. If you're not totally committed to listening, you find your mind wondering during the gaps. Love the story, hate the gaps!

G is for GREAT!

Sue Grafton is a hit every time. I am going to miss this dependably entertaining series once its over!!

Once I read H Ill be all caught up and in for a long long wait until X comes out in (presumably) 2015.

A little dizzy...

So which Kinsey is it, the sharp, witty detective, or the deer-in-the-headlights young lady? This story has both, which makes me wonder if Kinsey is a little neurotic. A good story, but sometimes she gets into situations where she should definitely know better, given her background. Oh well, guess we'll see how she does next time around, if she lives that long!

First time Grafton disappointed me

Dietz storyline was not believable. Irene storyline was great; wished there was more to that.

I loved this story. It grabbed me from the start, and I enjoyed every minute of it. I would definitely recommend it.

I appreciated the use of REAL male and female voices. It is long overdue in audio books.

A solid, fast paced mystery

Both loyal and new Patterson readers will certainly enjoy this solid mystery. Its classic elements of a fast pace, myriad twists and unforeseen turns, sex, love and violence makes it hard to stop listening. Add that a gorgeous woman is ?the bad guy? and you?ve got a story you?ll be anxious to tell your friends about this treat.

OK, not wonderful

One of those books you read and then forget. It passes the time, is interesting, but certainly not spellbinding.

Not up to the standard of his early work

I was disappointed with this one. I have really enjoyed early Patterson novels like "Kiss the Girls" and "Along Came a Spider" but since he started using ghost writers and cranks these out so quickly they are missing the spark of his early work. They all seem to follow a formula and everything is predictable.

Enjoyable

While not a masterpiece, it was very enjoyable and I found it passed the time very quickly. For a beachy type book, you can't beat this.

Entertaining

Amazing to me is the reviews are so opposite. It appears you either really enjoy this book (as I did) or you really don't. I like unabridged books and I found the Face to be a good length, entertaining, suspenseful, but a little bit of a weak ending.

Some reviewers mention the book is too wordy. From my prospective, not at all. I love the development of a story, analogies, wordsmiths and conjure up pictures in your mind. Koontz does a masterful job at this. The narrator is excellent, and, IMHO, the kid steals the book! Koontz develops this character the best, making you laugh, cry and feel his loneliness.

One of my all time favorite audible downloads.

While I certainly respect the opinons of other reviewers, I am glad I bought this book prior to reading the other reviews! It is amazing to me how far on the extremes different people can be reading the same book. I found The Face to be a delightfully fun audible experience. The plot was gripping and while I agree with others that Dean Koontz may not write literary masterpieces, he certainly knows how to build suspense in his books. There were a number of times a chapter would close on one character and I'd be anxious for the book to get back to their story, only to become wrapped up in what was going on with the current character. For me, one of the best parts of the book was how real and likeable the characters were. Contrast that with Mr. Murder (which I still liked), in which the Stillwater's family life, marriage and "adorable" children were saccharin-sweet and too nauseatingly perfect to be true and something that the average person can relate to. I like to use my iPod when I exercise, and I found myself taking much longer walks than my "minimum" just so I could keep listening to The Face.

Weak for Burke

I have read Burke and loved his great coloring, his pithy rendering of characters. Having never been on a bayou, I think I would know it if I was by his descriptions, even the smell of the place.

Now comes the real challenge> getting someone to read the work, someone who will not run the whole thing into a ditch. But, here comes Will Patton and not only are Burke's words NOT sinking beneath the lily pads, but they actually soar to new heights. So infused is Will's voice in my mind now, I cannot read Burke any longer without hearing it in Will's voice and inflection.

A rare conjunction of two wonderful talents! Crush some more mint into that Mint Julep and enjoy the trip!

Shame on you, Audible. This book is not abridged; it's butchered. A 3-hour long version, compared to the unabridged length of over 11 hours. Will Patton and James Lee Burke are a good team -- my rating does not reflect the writing or the performance. The unabridged version was issued by Recorded Books. Go find it, Audible!

Unfortunately adbridged

Where does Heaven's Prisoners rank among all the audiobooks you???ve listened to so far?

It's difficult to review a book that has only partly there. Who knows what's been left out? This was only available in the abridged, so no choice. Sometimes whole characters are cut. This one has the tone of the others, as far as I can tell, but some characterizations are shallow. Or have been so shaved down as to leave little information. I think the story is probably pretty good, but I advise anyone interested to either also buy the print book, or for Audible to get the whole book. There were certain jumps in the story, usually involving a character or how they feel about something. You can tell you've missed something.

Unabridged all the way!

In a Sue Grafton, nothing is irrelevant! I love what Judy Kaye does with the character's voice and tone. This was a great read.

Grafton Continues to Shine ~ A Creditworthy Peril

The second half of the alphabet seems to be Sue Grafton's friend. The series faithful have watched her skills and her characters develop and Peril continues this creditworthy trend.

Gone is the formulaic "Respectfully Submitted By" conclusion. Gone are many of the unnecessarily snarky Kinsey-isms. And gone are the predictable plots and stagnant characters. The faithful endured all that in the early books. Now is the pay off.

Kinsey is MUCH more rounded. Her emotions and actions more understandable. Her skepticism and irony much more realistic and appropriate, no longer overdone or superfluous. And even her more off-putting revelations (did we really need to know her panties were warm and damp at one point) are believably Kinsey-ish.

Secondary characters are better drawn, more fully developed, less predictable and much more realistic. They "could" be real people ~ they have character flaws and idiosyncrasies and often behave just a little unexpectedly. Once revealed, their motives make more sense and are not simple devices to get us to the end of the story, as has sometimes been the case in this series.

This is an easy, diverting listen, well narrated. We aren't talking Dickens or Twain here, but you don't expect that from Sue and Kinsey. You expect an interesting escape and with Peril, you have a fine one.

not bad

I had not read a sue grafton novel in a while. This was fairly entertaining. At times the story was slow and counts too much on coincidence

Good Read

I liked the storyliness and Kinsey's sense of humor. My only complaint would be that it ended abruptly. Not sure if it was the way it downloaded or the actual story. Usually her novels have an epilogue which finishes things up.

Have to love unabridged

Personally, I much prefer unabridged audio versions.

Wow.

Here we are, 8 weeks into the Pandemic, and most of the worlds population is either sick or dead. Supplies in shops are running low, people are beginning to realise just how bad it is. The president is hunkered in his bunker but is becoming increasingly erratic, Level 6 is in full affect and life is on the brink. Meanwhile Mac and Hunter are trying to get into a routine and Mac and her mum are setting up a makeshift lab to try to find either a cure or a vaccine. Life in their little mountain retreat is plodding along. Something happens and one of Mac's loved ones becomes infected, so it's a race against time for Mac!

This series is simply amazing. The attention to detail is phenomenal. I felt like I was watching a documentary while reading and learned a lot!! The situations the characters find themselves in was frighteningly real and you find yourself immersed in their story. You'll laugh and cry along with them and just find yourself a part of their world. We get to see more of the characters struggles in this as they try to survive.

Character wise, what I love most about this series are the characters.

For the True Alex Cross fans!

This book is not for the casual reader of mysteries. This book is for the true Alex Cross fans. This book is a turning point in Alex Cross' life. Yes, there is a murder mystery (a darn good one), but it also focus on Alex Cross' personal life. If you are not an Alex Cross fan, you will probably not appreciate this book. But I found the story truly entertaining and guessing to the end who the killer was. Has a super ending. Enjoy!!!!

What, Cross, again? You bet. Another outstanding thriller.Did it drag? Not a bit. Always interesting , always questioning. Complete and startling. Loved it.

Not Detective Cross' Best

This book was great as far as the mystery of it was concenred. But far too often the writer took us down the path of exploring the personal life of Alex Cross. If you've read his previous books, I'm sure you'll agree a little character development goes along way -- let's face it we really like these books because of the unsolved mystery... not the tochy feely moments with his family. The mystery however, was first rate.

Yawn

Too many murders and not enough twists and turns. I get it, there is a muderer! So..... maybe they thought by having 3 different narrators it would add to the book because it certainly does need something. Was the big deal trying to figure out whether the killer was a man or woman? Who cares? Why was that even an issue? I wanted to put it down so many times but i persevered. Now I'm wonder why I bothered. It never got any better. I read Patterson's "Lifeguard" and it was so much better than this one. Save your money. This one's a dud!

Painfully slow

I am a huge Patterson fan but found this read (listen) to be terribly slow. Barely any complexity and thought more than a handful of chapters were just irrelevant.

Suggest you pass on this one all together unfortunately. Truly dissapointing.

But as she digs deeper into Jenny's life, Jo learns that Dielman keeps a stranglehold on the family finances, down to the last nickel, and that Jenny's first marriage dissolved following the death of her young son. By all accounts - including her doctor's - she never recovered from the loss. Between a controlling husband, a tragic past, and a callous ex-husband, Jo can't be sure if she should suspect foul play or accept that the woman may have wanted to disappear.

For Jo, whose own demons are shadowing her every step, finding Jenny becomes more than the typical protect-and-serve.

Don't listen to the audible

The story was mediocre, but the audible was terrible. There were times I couldn't even stay focused on the story because the narrator was so awkward sounding. I honestly can't even rate the book because I feel the narration was so bad it made me HATE the book!!!

Horrible narrator

Decent story but this is the worst narrator I've ever listened to. Her reading was choppy and hesitant and there was very little fluctuation in character voices. At times it took a couple sentences before you knew which character was talking.

So So Crime Mystery

Nothing stood out in this book. I didn't really enjoy the characters and the excessive personal life drama at every turn was quite annoying. I guessed right on the killer from the moment they were introduced and nothing was unexpected in this one.

Slight suspense with good story line.

Kept me wondering who was the murderer with lots of hints towards numerous characters. Narrator was super breathy and kind of annoying.

Enjoyable Audiobook

Overall this was a good crime drama. However, it was a bit slow, rambling, and somewhat predictable. Not a must listen, but if you have a long drive, it's a good companion
