Publisher's Summary:
Sharks and dolphins both have torpedo-shaped bodies with fins on their backs. They slice through the water to grab their prey with sharp teeth. But despite their similarities, sharks and dolphins belong to different animal classes: One is a fish and gets oxygen from the water, and the other is a mammal and gets oxygen from the air. Marine educator Kevin Kurtz guides early listeners to compare and contrast these ocean predators through simple nonfiction text.

Interesting, educational and interactive!
My five-year-old loves every book by this author, including this one. It's a nice comparison between what some kids might think are very similar animals, laid out in an easy-to-read format, with incredible, full-color photographs. My son especially loves the Creative Minds activities in the back, where he can prove what he learned in the book. This is a great, educational (but not boring) book that kids (or you) can enjoy reading over and over. Also a great, easy resource for school reports!
This is a beautiful read for children
This is a beautiful read for children. The pictures are outstanding. The text is simple enough for my second graders to enjoy. We used this book as part of our research for informational writing on sharks, and it gave us some good information. I like the way it is a compare/contrast book discussing the similarities and differences between the two animals. Different types of the two animals were highlighted. In the back of the book there is a sections entitled, "For Creative Minds." This section gives even more information about sharks and dolphins. Arboreal provides great non-fiction texts for children. I highly recommend them!
I received a free copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest review, which I have given.
Good intro to sharks and dolphins.
A child who is fascinated by fish will love this study of the similarities and differences between sharks and dolphins. The photographs are excellent and the information is good although there's not a lot of detail. This book will work well with younger readers and will get them started without being too technical. This is a nice starter guide which could make the child desire to try more demanding books later on.
Use as a mentor text in writing workshop
This would be a great mentor text for young writers. Simply written, clear and cohesive â very explicit in the similarities and differences between these two animals. The page layouts work and there are a wide variety of sharks and dolphins in the photographs. Pretty sure âCommersonâsâ dolphin should be capitalized. Not a deal breaker--just a minor edit.
