Read this before you sign on for a raft trip.

Glad I read this! Now I don't have to wish I had gotten out of the oar boat into the ducky! Our family went on a day trip in an oar boat and I always wondered if we should do more. Now I know we aren'tRafting the River of No Return Wilderness - The Middle Fork of the Salmon Riverup to it. The author must have taken notes every evening after getting off the river to have detailed every rapid so well. He combines the affectionate and humorous memoir of his family adventure with historical anecdotes about the area which are very interesting. Highly recommended.

More trip diary than river guide

Bought it as prep for our own trip down the Middle Fork but didn't find it to be very helpful for learning about the river and the various drops. If you've never rafted with a commercial outfitter, this book does a good job of describing the experience so it could be helpful for someone trying to decide "Is this type of trip for me?". Sort of like watching someone's slide show.

Great Read

This is a great read for anyone who believes that life should be an adventure. One father and two teens having an amazing experience in the wilderness. Who knew it was even possible in today's techno-obsessed society? The descriptions will make you believe you could do it too.

Absolutely Hilarious

Disclaimer: I am part owner of Travelers' Tales, the publisher of this book, but I read it just for fun, like you would, and couldn't put it down. This is the funniest book I've read in a long time. Doug has sought out bizarre situations in his travels that most of us would be too embarrassed to try, and tells of his escapades in ways that made my sides split.

His "school" sequence -- gondola school in Venice (the source of the book's title), Sumo wrestling school in Japan, Kickboxing School in Thailand, to give only a few -- gives endless food for how much fun it can be to put yourself in awkward situations where you learn about the inside of something most tourists view only from the outside. His account of his visit to the Kit Kat Club in Berlin, and his attempt in advance to come up with a suitably outrageous costume is one of the funniest pieces I've ever read.

This is one of those books your friends will either hate you or love you for, because you'll be reading them all the best bits aloud.

If you like Bill Bryson, you'll likely love Lansky, since he's got a similar mix of travel and slightly off-color humor.

An entertaining look at unusual travel adventures

I enjoy entertaining travel stories, especially when they are written with a sense of humor. Which means that there was little chance that I wasn't going to enjoy this book. A collection of relatively short stories about the author's widely varied travel adventures around the world. From learning to row a gondola in Venice and schlepping luggage at an underwater hotel in Flordia, to hiking Kilimanjaro and learning how to Sumo wrestle in Japan, the author demonstrates an incredible willingness to try his hand at a vast array of different activities (even though he only appears to delve ever so shallowly into any of them). His stories about these experiences are both fun to read and frequently illuminating. Lansky manages to shed a little light into various cultures and behind the scenes of activities that few other people bother to look at very closely. While Lansky's sense of humor and writing style are similar to Dave Barry's, he still manages to convey a sense of empathy with the people he meets. All this comes together as a collection of very readable, fun and informative essays.

Beyond the portrait of tourism

I had the good fortune of meeting Robert early on in my own Costa Rican travels. After exchanging a few texts, we met (appropriately enough) at San José's international book fair. That year's honored guests? American authors.

We shared our mutual surprise at the lack of solid English literature on Costa Rica, traveling Costa Rica, or perhaps living in Costa Rica. Even a book that simply went beyond the tropes of Costa Rica serving as some sort of retirement Utopia would be nice, I thought.

I was thrilled to see The Tico Times moving forward with this project months later after our initial meeting in San José, and can honestly report back that "The Green Season" is a thoroughly enjoyable, quick read that goes beyond the tourist destinations (though they are there), and delivers insight into Costa Rica the country, its people, and life abroad as an expatriate. Robert and I only met on a couple of occasions, so suffice it to say that I write this glowing review out of my own volition, not out of some sort of friendly obligation.

If you're planning to move to Costa Rica, visit Costa Rica, or simply have an interest in a corner of the globe that the English literary world has paid little attention to, I highly recommend picking up a copy of "The Green Season."
