    Summary:

Two delightful detective dramas adapted from Jill Paton Walsh's bestselling books

Award-winning author Jill Paton Walsh was well known for her four Lord Peter Wimsey novels that continued and completed Dorothy L. Sayers's much-loved series. These two cosy crime dramas introduce her own sparkling creation, Imogen Quy, a college nurse and amateur sleuth who investigates foul play in academia.

The Wyndham Case - The tranquil atmosphere of St Agatha's College, Cambridge is shattered when a young undergraduate is found dead on the floor of a specialist library. The repository of a rare collection of 17th-century scientific volumes, the 'Wyndham Case' is always kept locked: so how did Philip Skellow get in? And was his death accidental - or murder? Imogen is determined to find out... Starring Carolyn Pickles as Imogen Quy.

A Piece of Justice - When Imogen's lodger Fran Bullion is asked to write the biography of eminent mathematician Gideon Summerfield, she is delighted - but Imogen fears she may be in danger. Three previous would-be biographers have either died or disappeared, and their research stopped at the same point in their subject's life: August 1978. What secret surrounds that fateful summer, and who is willing to kill to protect it? Barbara Flynn stars as Imogen, with Tracy Wiles as Fran.

    Summary:

    Brought to you by Penguin.

One of the worlds greatest scientists of human behaviour, the bestselling author of Behave, shows that free will does not exist - and sets out the disturbing yet liberating implications of accepting this fact.

What if free will is an illusion? As Robert Sapolsky shows in this masterful account of the science of human behaviour, everything we think and do is caused by the luck of our biology and the influence of our environment, and ultimately both are beyond our control. In a world without free will, we must completely rethink what we mean by choice, responsibility, morality and justice. Sapolskys extraordinary book does exactly this, guiding us toward a profoundly fairer, more humane way of living together.

A joy to read. It's impossible to recommend this book too highly. Reading it could change your life LAURENCE REES

    Summary:

Comedy capers set in the cutthroat world of advertising

Disgraced in the US, maverick ad man, Eliott Thurber is forced to transfer to the newly opened London offices of Parabola Media. The clash of cultures has hilarious consequences as he tries to cope with promoting a range of peculiar products, challenging clients and not to mention his disgruntled new colleagues. His first assignment is a gourmet cat food for an intensely conservative company but Eliott has his eyes on a bigger prize, American investment in the NHS. After all, 'where there's pain, there's gain...' Can the media mastermind win over a whole new market? Or will his eccentric ways see him fall even further from favour?

Laugh out loud over six episodes of this fast paced comedy drama set in the shallow, dog-eat-dog world of advertising. The series features the brilliant Pippa Haywood, star of Green Wing and Prisoner's Wives and Samantha Bond, best known for playing Miss Moneypenny in the James Bond movies and her role in the BAFTA nominated Outnumbered series. Michael Brandon, from the classic TV show Dempsey and Makepeace as well as Jerry Springer the Opera, plays Eliott Thurber. Genres: Fiction & Literature, General

    Summary:

Sarah Lancashire and Maxine Peake star in this hard hitting, two-part drama

What sort of mother would allow her child to perform online for paedophiles? And how could the family's social worker let it happen? Told in two parts, This Repulsive Woman and Every Child Matters, is a real-time drama that follows the stories of the two women at the centre of a fictional high profile court case and national scandal.

This Repulsive Woman stars Maxine Peake as Deborah Hurst, a woman tried and convicted of an offence under the Protection of Children Act 1978 after allowing her ten year old daughter, Paige to dance semi-naked on the internet for paedophiles. The most vilified woman in the UK, she is interviewed by probation officer, Tony Jukes (played by Neil Dudgeon) who must draw up a pre-sentence report fo the Court to consider. Tony digs deep, trying to uncover what would cause a mother to commit such an appalling crime. For Deborah, 'It were nowt' - is she a depraved monster, or the cruel victim of circumstance?

In part two, Sarah Lancashire plays Joanne, Deborah Hurst's social worker, who failed to protect Deborah's daughter. It's six months since the case caused an outcry, and in Every Child Matters Joanne tells how her life has been destroyed by the leaking of her personal details to the tabloid press. Suspended from her job and waiting for a disciplinary tribunal, she decides to take a huge risk in the hope of seeking justice for Paige and closure for herself. Why was she victimised by the press and was she really to blame for what happened?

Sarah Lancashire shot to stardom as Coronation Street's Raquel Watts. She went on to star in such dramas as Clocking Off, Five Daughters and Last Tango in Halifax. She is perhaps best known for her role as Police Sergeant Catherine Cawood in Happy Valley.

Maxine Peake played Myra Hindley in See No Evil and Veronica in three series of Shameless. George Costigan is best known for the cult movie Rita, Sue And Bob Too. He has also appeared in Shirley Valentine and Calendar Girls, and television shows Doctor Who and Happy Valley. Neil Dudgeon plays DCI John Barnaby in the hugely popular Midsomer Murders. Writer Christopher Reason's television credits include Eastenders, The Golden Hour and The Bill. His writing for radio includes The Good Soldier Svejk, A Second to Midnight, and The Age of Innocence.

    Summary:

    Brought to you by Penguin.

How do we determine what is beautiful? Whose standards are we trying to meet when we spend our hard-earned money on our haircare, skincare and makeup; where do they come from, and how can we learn to undo them?

Upon getting her first tattoo at 40 years old, award-winning journalist Afua Hirsch embarked on a journey to reclaim her body from the colonial ideas of purity, adornment and ageing she - and many of us - absorbed while growing up. Informed by research from around the world, Afua will look at how individual and collective notions of what is beautiful are constructed or stripped away from us. Through personal anecdotes, interviews from beauty experts, practitioners and service users, she explores the global history of skin, hair and body modification rituals. These insights and discoveries will empower readers to reconnect with their cultures of origin, better understand the link between beauty and politics, and liberate themselves from mainstream beauty standards that aren't serving them.

    Summary:

    Brought to you by Penguin.

Why do women live longer than men? Why do women have menopause? Why are women more likely to get Alzheimer's? Why do girls score better at every academic subject than boys until puberty, when suddenly their scores plummet? And does the female brain really exist?

In Eve, Cat Bohannon answers questions scientists should have been addressing for decades. With boundless curiosity and sharp wit, she covers the past 200 million years to explain the specific science behind the development of the female sex. Eve is not only a sweeping revision of human history, it's an urgent and necessary corrective for a world that has focused primarily on the male body for far too long. Bohannon's findings, including everything from the way C-sections in the industrialized world are rearranging women's pelvic shape to the surprising similarities between pus and breast milk, will completely change what you think you know about evolution and why Homo sapiens have become such a successful and dominant species, from tool use to city building to the development of language.
