Authentic
I had the privilege to experience submarine life as both enlisted and as an officer.
What Mr Fleming describes brought back many memories of life onboard a submarine. I appreciate how brutally honest he is/was about himself....the hallmark of a true leader and a trait that is essential to success in any field (in my opinion).
A couple nits. San Francisco was not the first submarine drydocked in Guam. Many a "5 for Freedom" were drydocked in Guam back when the Polaris boats were forward deployed out of Guam....I got to experience an emergency drydocking on the R E Lee back in 76 and there is an iconic submarine photo of the George Washington sitting in drydock in Guam.
The book could us an editor....there are a fair number of errors in the book but nothing that takes away from the overall flow.
Well Done.
Excellent and intense
I read the Kindle version of this book. This was a great read. I really liked it. The author does a great job telling the story of this submarine through is own physical and mental anguish as well as that of his shipmates. The writing is quite good.regardless of whether you judged this book by nonfiction or fiction standards. You have to keep turning pages to find out what happens. Reading the book is intense and the details are vivid without bogging down the reading. Although nonfiction, the author tells his story and moves it along like well-structured movie. I think the book, in fact, could be the foundation for a great screenplay. With such a writing gift, Mr. Fleming should write more, and I would buy more of his books.
Excellent, Candid, and Insightful Experience Of A Submariner
I really appreciate Alex Fleming's work. His candor about his experience in the submarine force made for a page turning marathon. I wanted to see what happened in the end. No spoiler from me, you'll have to read it for yourself. Easily one of the best submarine career stories I've ever read. Strong recommendation for this book. Carry on, Alex!
Great book on management and life
I wasn't sure about this book because of the cover. I thought it was going to be a cheap self published work. It surprised me. It made me feel like I was a friend listening to another friends story. The story is one you can learn a great deal from. There are lessons of how to lead, prepaid, handle failure, handle success, work with coworkers, work with subordinates and superiors. I have a master's in project management and a PMP. This book is one of the best management books I have ever read, wrapped in a great personal story. Great job!
Life of a submarine officer, in training
This book was an eye opener for me, in a good way. I grew up reading Hornblower and Edward Beach and was on my way to the Naval Academy, the Navy and submarines.
