apasionante!

Five Stars

Me encanta este libro.

Recomendado!!!

100% recomendado....

Publisher's Summary:

In the year 1956, Anastacia Fotopoulos finds herself pregnant and betrayed, fleeing from a bad marriage. With the love and support of her dear friends Stavros and Soula Papadakis, Ana is able to face the challenges of single motherhood. Left with emotional wounds, she resists her growing affection for Alexandros Giannakos, an old acquaintance. But his persistence and unconditional love for Ana and her child is eventually rewarded and his love is returned. In a misguided, but well-intentioned effort to protect the ones they love, both Ana and Alex keep secrets - ones that could threaten the delicate balance of their family.

The story continues in the 1970's as Dean and Demi Papadakis, and Sophia Giannakos attempt to negotiate between two cultures. Now Greek-American teenagers, Sophia and Dean, who have shared a special connection since childhood, become lovers. Sophia is shattered when Dean rebels against the pressure his father places on him to uphold his Greek heritage and hides his feelings for her. When he pulls away from his family, culture and ultimately his love for her, Sophia is left with no choice but to find a life different from the one she'd hoped for.

Evanthia's Gift is a multigenerational love story spanning 50 years and crossing two continents, chronicling the lives that unify two families.

Multigenerational Greek family saga

Any additional comments?

This was a lovely story of two close Greek families beginning in World War II. I had had no idea of the difficult Greek experience of the war. The story offered a look into the daily life with the wonderful family bonding and support through difficult times. It caused me to reflect on my own family. I really enjoyed learning about the Greek culture and food. There were even recipes included. The family story and romance was very satisfying. I look forward to the next book to see how the next generation turns out.

Didn't like the second generation as much

I got hooked on this story very early! I enjoyed Anastacia and Alexs story. They were two very interesting characters who have lived through a terrible time of WWII in Greece. They are telling the younger generation their struggles and their heartbreaks. It got me very emotionally invested. Their love was very beautiful and I was happy to hear about how they overcame such trials.

Then it moved onto Sophia, their daughter, and her love interest Dean. Sophia is just blah. She is whiny and totally dependent on Dean, who is a jerk waffle and doesnt deserve her. I hated their relationship, I wanted to punch something every time Sophia cried over Dean and every time she accepted him back..I dont understand how it went from such a beautiful and touching story to something just angsty and annoying. This is my opinion, you may perhaps enjoy angsty books and girls who super pine after dudes that are not good enough for them. For that reason I give the story a 3.5/5.

The narration was beautiful! Lawrence has an amazing accent for the first generation characters and I am in love with it!!! I think she had a great tone and pacing throughout the story. Even if I was extremely mad at certain parts, I cannot fault her voice as it was steady and clear, and had great emotion throughout. Her audio I give 4.5/5 stars!

So worth it!

Any additional comments?

I was hooked on this book from the very beginning. The narrator instantly brought the story to life.

Title: The Heart's Invisible Furies

Narrator: Stephen Hogan

Format: Unabridged

Length: 21 hrs and 19 mins

Language: English

Release date: 09-13-17

Publisher: Penguin Random House Canada

Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 6 votes

Genres: Fiction, Contemporary

Publisher's Summary:

From the beloved New York Times best-selling author of The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, a sweeping, heartfelt saga about the course of one man's life, beginning and ending in postwar Ireland.

Cyril Avery is not a real Avery - or, at least, that's what his adoptive parents tell him. And he never will be. But if he isn't a real Avery, then who is he?

Born out of wedlock to a teenage girl cast out from her rural Irish community and adopted by a well-to-do if eccentric Dublin couple via the intervention of a hunchbacked Redemptorist nun, Cyril is adrift in the world, anchored only tenuously by his heartfelt friendship with the infinitely more glamorous and dangerous Julian Woodbead. At the mercy of fortune and coincidence, he will spend a lifetime coming to know himself and where he came from and - over his many years - will struggle to discover an identity, a home, a country, and much more.

In this, Boyne's most transcendent work to date, we are shown the story of Ireland from the 1940s to today through the eyes of one ordinary man. The Heart's Invisible Furies is a novel to make you laugh and cry while reminding us all of the redemptive power of the human spirit.

Critic Reviews:

"By turns whimsical and heartbreaking, Boyne's sprawling novel treads Dickensian territory across seven decades of Irish history, ending with a redemption for both a country and a native son." (People)

"Bleak, bittersweet, and Irish to the bone...explore[s] the relationship between Catholicism and patriarchy in midcentury Ireland and beyond." (O, The Oprah Magazine)

Having grown up in England I loved reading this book

Having grown up in England I loved reading this book! I especially like reading it out loud as I did recently when my husband was in hospital for 10 weeks. I tried to keep my voice down but the other men in his hospital room begged me to read louder so that they all could hear the story!! I read to them every morning. :)

take a break

I read this years ago and recently gave it as a present. The person enjoyed it and thought it was clever and a good read.

Fun book

An interesting parable about the royal family--and how adversity affects each member. The Queen seemed just right to me, some others not so much. But fun all the same.

Five Stars

I f you are from England it's a must read-laugh out loud funny

Terrific!

This is one of my all-time favorite books.

You can truly vizualize the Queen, and family

living in those Counsel Flats!

It's hilarious. And, it's amazing what the

less than royal citizens must endure to survive.

And, survive they do! Clever, shocking, and

funny.

Titolo: L'arte della gioia

Autore: Goliarda Sapienza

Narratore: Anita Zagaria

Formato: Unabridged

Durata: 24 hrs and 38 mins

Lingua: Italiano

Data di pubblicazione: 07-14-17

Editore: Audible Studios

Categoria: Fiction, Contemporary

Riepilogo Editore:

Title: Lillian Boxfish Takes a Walk

Author: Kathleen Rooney

Narrator: Xe Sands

Format: Unabridged

Length: 8 hrs and 20 mins

Language: English

Release date: 06-29-17

Publisher: Bolinda Publishing Pty Ltd

Genres: Fiction, Contemporary

Publisher's Summary:

It's the last day of 1984, and 85-year-old Lillian Boxfish is about to take a walk....

'In my reckless and undiscouraged youth,' Lillian Boxfish writes, 'I worked in a walnut-paneled office 13 floors above West 35th Street.' She took 1930s New York by storm, working her way up writing copy for R. H. Macy's to become the highest paid advertising woman in the country. It was a job that, she says, 'in some ways saved my life and in other ways ruined it'.

Now it's the last night of 1984, and Lillian, 85 years old but just as sharp and savvy as ever, is on her way to a party. It's chilly enough out for her mink coat, and Manhattan is grittier now - her son keeps warning her about a subway vigilante on the prowl - but the quick-tongued poetess has never been one to scare easily.

On a walk that takes her over 10 miles around the city, she meets bartenders, bodega clerks, security guards, criminals, children, parents and parents-to-be while reviewing a life of excitement and adversity, passion and heartbreak, illuminating all the ways New York has changed - and has not.

A love letter to city life in all its guts and grandeur, Lillian Boxfish Takes a Walk by Kathleen Rooney paints a portrait of a remarkable woman across the canvas of a changing America: from the Jazz Age to the onset of the AIDS epidemic and from the Great Depression to the birth of hip-hop. Lillian figures she might as well take her time. For now, after all, the night is still young.

Critic Reviews:

"Extraordinary...hilarious...elegantly written, Rooney creates a glorious paean to a distant literary life and time - and an unabashed celebration of human connections that bridge past and future." (Publishers Weekly)

"Effervescent with verve, wit, and heart, Rooney's nimble novel celebrates insouciance, creativity, chance, and valor." (Booklist)

"A lively, fictionalized version of Fishback's story...[with] plenty of charm." (Kirkus Reviews)

Members Reviews:

Slow starter but stick with it

At first I found the prose a little bit fussy but after a while I came to enjoy it and looked forward to the slow reveal of the story. Lillian Boxfish is a wonderfully drawn character who I could imagine is like Marmite, fortunately I came to love her

A great read.

I loved this book.

My only question : It is dedicated to someone dead. The other Hero of the book. Shall Besson have no legal problems with that ? Or has he obtained permission from his friend' s Thomas family ?
