    Publisher's Summary:
Short stories have always been a sort of instant access into an author's brain, their soul and heart. A few pages can lift our lives into locations, people and experiences with a sweep of landscape, narration, feelings and emotions that is difficult to achieve elsewhere. In this series we try to offer up tried and trusted 'Top Tens' across many different themes and authors. But any anthology will immediately throw up the questions - Why that story? Why that author? The theme itself will form the boundaries for our stories which range from well-known classics, newly told, to stories that modern times have overlooked but perfectly exemplify the theme. Throughout the volume our authors whether of instant recognition or new to you are all leviathans of literature. Some you may disagree with but they will get you thinking; about our choices and about those you would have made. If this volume takes you on a path to discover more of these miniature masterpieces then we have all gained something. In this volume English women have begun the long haul to be treated as equals, even though some see others as beneath them. Class still has its boundaries and its distinctions. Our authors show that the decade brings much to revel in but also much to worry our hearts. 01 - The Top 10 - The 1920's - The English - The Women - An Introduction02 - The String Quartet by Virginia Woolf03 - Miss Ogilivy Finds Herself by Radclyffe Hall04 - Her Murderer by Mary Cholmondeley05 - Hodge by Elinor Mordaunt06 - Blessed Are the Meek by Mary Webb07 - Young Magic by Helen Simpson08 - Sylvia by Bessie Kyffin-Taylor.wav09 - The Black Crusader by Alicia Ramsay10 - Decay by Marjorie Bowen11 - The Night of No Weather by Violet Hunt

    Length: 0 hours 43 minutes
    Release date: January 1, 2023
    Genres: Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
Mary Eleanor Wilkins Freeman was born in Randolph, Massachusetts on the 31st October 1852 to parents who were strict and orthodox Congregationalists. When she was a teenager the family moved to Brattleboro, Vermont and it was there she finished her education and began writing verse and stories for children. When the family's dry-goods store closed in 1873 the family, now impoverished, returned to Randolph where her mother was to die mother three years later. She published 'The Ghost Story' in 1881 after it won a short story competition. With elements of the supernatural and domestic realism she had hit upon a solid formula for success. Two years later her father died and with no immediate family and only a small estate she now committed to writing full-time to secure an income. For the times it was a brave move but her undoubted talent meant success would follow.Over her career she published more than two dozen volumes of short stories and novels and is most well-known for 'A New England Nun'. Her works were mainly set in New England and many of her female characters are strong and assertive, challenging contemporary stereotypes over their then roles, values and relationships in society. As a feminist she was keen to engage her audience in a discussion about the lack of control women had over many issues including the family finances.A meeting with the younger Dr. Charles Manning Freeman began a slow, decade long, courtship that endured many obstacles and delays until they eventually married on New Years Day, 1902. They built a home in Metuchen, where Mary was something of a local celebrity. Sadly her husband suffered from alcoholism and addiction to sleeping powders, fast horses and was also prone to womanizing. He was committed to the New Jersey State Hospital for the Insane and with that the couple separated. After his death in 1923, he left his estate to his chauffeur and one dollar to Mary. On 13th March 1930, Mary E Wilkins Freeman suffered a fatal heart attack in Metuchen. She was 77.

    Format: Unabridged Audiobook
    Length: 0 hours 33 minutes
    Release date: January 1, 2023
    Genres: Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
Edmée Elizabeth Monica Dashwood, née de la Pasture, and more commonly known as E M Delafield, was born in Steyning, Sussex on 9th June 1890. Raised in the fading years of the Victorian era with its Empire and strict moral codes Delafield, not yet married at twenty-one, joined a French religious order, in Belgium, but soon decided that this was a totally wrong choice for her. Her next challenge was her work during the horror of the First World War. Delafield decided to take up a position as a nurse in a Voluntary Aid Detachment in Exeter. It was whilst here that she managed to write her first novel, 'Zella Sees Herself'. With the end of the war new opportunities were sought and she now took up a position for the South-West Region of the Ministry of National Service in Bristol. With it came enough time to write two more novels: 'The War Workers' (1918) and 'The Pelicans' (1918). On 17th July 1919, she married Colonel Arthur Paul Dashwood, OBE, an engineer responsible for building the massive docks at Hong Kong Harbour. The marriage produced two children; Lionel and Rosamund. That same year her fourth novel, 'Consequences', was published. The couple spent their early years in Malaya but returned to England to live in Croyle, an old house in Kentisbeare, Devon. Delafield continued to collect responsibilities and organise whatever she could. At the initial meeting of the Kentisbeare Women's Institute, Delafield was unanimously elected president, and also became a Justice of the Peace, raised the children and, of course, continued to write her best-selling novels. Her greatest work is undoubtedly the largely autobiographical 'Diary of a Provincial Lady', which is a simply structured journal of the life of an upper-middle class Englishwoman, living mostly in a Devon village of the 1930s. It spawned several best-selling sequels. Her works also includes stage and radio plays, film scripts and short stories. After the death of her son in 1940, her health began to markedly decline. E M Delafield died on 2nd December 1943 after collapsing whilst giving a lecture in Oxford. She was 53.

    Format: Unabridged Audiobook
    Length: 0 hours 40 minutes
    Release date: January 1, 2023
    Genres: Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
Helena Petrovna Blavatsky, often known as Madame Blavatsky, was born on 12th August 1831 into an aristocratic family in present day Dnipro in Ukraine, then part of the Russian Empire. She was the younger sister of the writer Vera Zhelikhovsky.Much of Blavatsky's life story relies on her own memories which changed much during her lifetime and therefore parts of it are unreliable. What appears to be certain is that much of her life was lived first on family travels and postings and then on her journeys in an effort to further her own self-education and quest for knowledge. As a teenager she developed an interest in Western esotericism and from there she claimed many travels including a trip to India where she encountered a group of spiritual adepts, the 'Masters of the Ancient Wisdom', who sent her to Shigatse, Tibet, where they trained her to develop a deeper understanding of the synthesis of religion, philosophy, and science. By the early 1870s, Blavatsky was involved in the Spiritualist movement, which was then popular both in Britain and abroad, even though she argued against its main tenet that those 'contacted' were the spirits of the dead. She moved to the United States in 1873 and became close to the journalist Henry Steel Olcott who helped her gain public attention as a spirit medium and then also became an adherent to her principles. In 1875 in New York City she co-founded the Theosophical Society and two years later published 'Isis Unveiled', a book outlining her Theosophical world-view from its ancient roots to the modern day. Her work was even more popular in Asia than elsewhere and is said to have influenced both Ghandi and Nehru amongst many others. In 1880, she and Olcott moved to India, where the Society was allied to a Hindu reform movement. That same year she converted to Buddhism. However, she was often plagued with accusations of fraudulent paranormal phenomena. With her health failing she returned to London and published 'The Secret Doctrine', her commentary on claimed ancient Tibetan manuscripts, and other books. Helena Blavatsky died in London of influenza during the global pandemic on 8th May 1891. She was 59.
