Seemed too short

Would you try another book from Nathaniel Burns and/or Gregg Rizzo?

I really like this series by Nathaniel Burns. I'm not the greatest fan of Greg Rizzo's narration, but it is okay.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

I feel like it was an odd place to end the book. I was completely expecting another chapter and then all of a sudden I'm hearing the ending credits...I almost feel it would have made more sense to cut the story shorter in a suspenseful wait.

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

The narration is okay, a little slower than I'd like, but not awful. I've heard worse.

Excellent Scandinavian Gothic novel

What made the experience of listening to Wolf Winter the most enjoyable?

I loved this novel. The theme is refreshing different to most of the novels that Ive read. The prose is sleek and elegant. It was a fascinating view od peasant life in Sweden in the 1700s.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Maila. She was brave in the face of great adversity.

What does Jenny Funnell bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

The narration is clear with an even pitch and pace. The accurate pronunciation of names was invaluable.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The most memorable part was when Maija was about to perform amputation of her daughters gangrenous toes.

Any additional comments?

Great book. I would love to read another novel from this author.

Atmospheric novel with beautiful imagery

An interesting story with strong female characters in a very male dominated society. Explores the relationship between the church and the more pagan beliefs of the people. I enjoyed it greatly.

Interesting and Unusual

What did you like most about Wolf Winter?

The time and the setting, Swedish Lapland, 1717.Mostly I enjoyed the writing style. Never saying too much, but always enough.Also the gritty unsentimentality of the characters.

What did you like best about this story?

A murder is at the centre of this novel, but far more interesting is reading about the survival techniques of rural settlers through the winter in very rural Sweden.The magic and mystery that isolation brings, and the relationships of these people to the church.

Did Jenny Funnell do a good job differentiating each of the characters? How?

No. I thought her reading was one dimensional, flat and dull. The baby voices she gave to the children, and even an adult was irritating.

Tough Journey, but worth it!

Would you consider the audio edition of Crusade of Tears to be better than the print version?

Yes

What did you like best about this story?

I really loved the characters. I doubt that I'll ever forget them.

Which scene was your favorite?

The scene where Wil defeated the Dark Lord with a simple wildflower was very powerful. But there were many others so this is a hard question.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I cried when Maria was...well, I better not actually say because it'd spoil it!

Any additional comments?

This was not an easy book but I'm really glad I stayed with it. The narration was absolutely perfect, and I liked the story very much though it did get me down in parts. However, I was so connected to the characters that I never wanted to leave them! I really recommend this book, though it isn't for the faint of heart.

Profound, inspiring, memorable

What other book might you compare Crusade of Tears to and why?

This is a hard one. I guess 'Lord of the Rings,' though admittedly Baker is not Tolkien. But the theme of journey is very similar, as is the rich use of allusion, metaphor and didactic exposition.

Have you listened to any of Colin Fluxmans other performances before? How does this one compare?

No. But Mr.Fluxman offers an outstanding narration.

If you could take any character from Crusade of Tears out to dinner, who would it be and why?

This one's easy. Father Pieter would be my choice. I can honestly say that I'll never forget this shrewd, mischievous, wise old man. He has a sense of humor, is refreshingly authentic, and intelligent. His spirituality is inviting; he never preaches but is tuned to the mystical realities.

Any additional comments?

I found this book to be a profound exploration of the troubling mystery of suffering under the eyes of a loving God. The author did a masterful job of weaving allusion, metaphor, and old fashioned story telling to create characters I will never forget. Given the style and the theme, I do understand how this book may not be for everyone. But I very much enjoyed the complexity of the plot and the elegant description of time and place. The overwhelming effect of this epic was astonishing at deep levels.

No, I would not try another book from the author. I only managed to listen to the first 16 chapters (of 30), due to good narration.

More reading about the Scottish "medical" Cole family

I have now read this book twice, couldn't put it down. The historical background during the American Civil War taught me more details of history that I had forgotten or not been interested in. Intertwined with the descendants of the Cole family were also the new understandings and developments in the field of medicine. This is a "must read".

The combination of the reality of the true news stories with the fictional accounts provided by the author's imagination that has been fuelled by his research of the time in history.was

Obviously, the first book in the series comes to mind. Chesapeake 1880 continues in the style of Chesapeake 1850 as this is the next 30 years in the timeline.

Daniel and Sean are definitely favourites as they seek out their place in this new world that they have come to.

Easy listening and a very way to learn about an interesting time.. The afternoon really went by quickly while this book was on.

I enjoyed the book having spent time on the Chesapeake as a youngster. The voices of the reader help with the feel of the words read. Also, you might want to read , Chesapeake 1850.

Learn how to correctly pronounce place names and other words, such as, Anne Arundel, Magothy, Gaithersburg, Aquia. Very annoying to someone from the area to hear the names butchered.

A wonderfully entertaining way to practice German

Any additional comments?

I downloaded this audio performance book because I needed to brush up on my German before moving to Austria. I sat listening for hours upon hours while stuck in LA traffic and it was very enjoyable to listen to, the characters are interesting and complex, the voice actors do a great job, and for my purpose of using my time in traffic to help my German it worked very well.

Wäre besser ohne Jonah

Je weiter ich die Geschichte gehört habe, desto unerträglicher habe ich Jonah gefunden. Er war total unsympathisch und einseitig...aber viele von den anderen Charakteren waren richtig interessant, besonders die Frauen. Der Erzähler war nur okay, und der Sprecher, der Jonah spielte, war manchmal monoton, aber die anderen Sprecher und auch die Produktion waren super. Ich werde dieses Buch wahrscheinlich nicht wieder hören, und ich werde keine folgenden Bücher in die Serie kaufen, wenn sie auf audible.com erscheinen, aber insgesamt war dies keine Verschwendung.

Well Done Historical Fiction

If you have a interest in historical fiction, particularly from the era of WWII, then this book is for you. The author tells the story from the very different points of view of the two main characters. Peter, a German infantryman on the Eastern front and Katharina, his mail-order bride living at home with her parents in Berlin. He marries for a honeymoon leave; she for a chance at a widow's pension. Ms Magee does a excellent job of showing how the tide of the war, as it goes from victories to defeat, affects the home front as well as the soldier on the battlefield. She makes it believable that their relationship, based on a 10 day leave, is what sustains them as their worlds fall apart.

I know that some have commented on the abruptness of the ending but I thought that was in keeping with the story. Life is seldom "happy-ever-after."

The narrator, Suzanne Toren, did a excellent job

Ending was unexpected and disappointing. Suzanne Toren brilliant narrator bringing each character to life would not recommend the book.

Just finished this book and I loved it! Out of her recent works

Just finished this book and I loved it! Out of her recent works , one of her best. I loved the plot and how she weaves the two families together. Once again, Ms. Steel, by writing about a family and the passage of time, makes me think about How profound our own actions are and how they will affect future generations. Well done and a great read!

This is a book that begins like all of Danielle Steele's books, never has the male been wealthier or more handsome and the female has impeccable breeding with exquisite hair, face, and body, although the educational level of the characters are never mentioned. This is formula writing at its most successful and it seldom varies as the author introduces the family, the problem, Jewish background with Hitler looming, but the ability to escape and survive with an improbable solution, but a fairy tale ending. All of D.S.'s books fit her formula but they entertain and provide escape for a few hours. I am always disappointed in myself when I give in and read them, but, it was a few hours of sheer entertainment. If you've read one, you've read them all. Okie Reading Specialist

Not her best

I've read every single one of Danielle Steel's books and I just feel that this wasn't one of her best books. It felt rushed--like she had to hurry up and finish it and get it into the stores by a certain time or something. Towards the end she was really rushing things and it hurt the plot line--in my opinion. I think she should have given this book more of her time and not rushed through it.
