It all starts with YOU
An intriguing look at who you are and, more importantly, who you can be. Itâs not what I usually read, but I found it interesting.
Elegant, readable journey to living from your best self
Renu Persaud begins this book with an elegant tale of her own journey, a literal 'mountaintop experience.' Throughout The Mastery of You, she relates insights with the same concise, thoughtful style.
We're aware of our individual selves in much of the Western world. Self-care and self-awareness have become cultural buzzwords, with many people aware that they need to do these things, but with little idea of what they actually involve. While self-care practices such as eating ice cream and taking time to relax might be fun, and are good to do sometimes, Renu Persaud lets us know that real self-mastery, the term she gives to this kind of deep self-knowledge, goes deeper than that.
Mastering yourself by understanding what you value, what you can bring to the world, and honestly what you are good at and what you aren't, where your strengths and weaknesses lie, is very different from narcissism and requires real humility. And, it can require courage as well, if you need to back away from doing things that others expect of you, or that you're used to expecting of yourself, so that you can focus on what's really important to you, such as spending time with your loved ones or developing the skills and interests that you truly have.
Self-mastery isn't always easy, but Renu Persaud explains how it is useful and worthwhile and provides a guide for how to go about understanding yourself. And, far from being self-indulgent, self-mastery can allow you to give more of yourself to others and be more useful, since you'll know better what you have to give and how you can be useful.
This book is readable, inspirational, and gives some original insights on a topic that can benefit anyone.
