Every company wants to grow and become more successful. There is no magic formula to make this happen, but it is generally agreed that in order for this to happen the company cannot stand still. Instead, they always have to be trying new things and growing.
    What You'll Find Inside:
In an IT team, in order to make this kind of growth occur, innovation has to be encouraged to happen. All too often the workers on the team can get too involved in their day-to-day tasks to spend any time thinking about innovation. That's where the IT manager has to step in.
As the IT manager it is your job to create an environment in which your team that will not only encourage innovation to happen but will also help it to grow once it starts. A great deal of this has to do with how you communicate to the team what you want to happen.
Innovation is something that we all know that we want to have happen, but just exactly how to make it occur is what often eludes us. As the IT manager you are going to have to identify the innovation strategies that will work with your team and your IT department and then implement them.
It's possible that either innovation projects have been tried in the past and have not worked or, more likely, there is no innovation going on right now. It is your job to change this and make innovation take root and become part of everyone's daily routine.
This book is filled with tools that IT managers can use to introduce innovation into their teams. These ideas range from learning to grow good ideas to doing more with what you already have. No matter what approach you decide to take, the goal is the same: Cause innovation to take root and grow.
Making innovation happen is not easy. By reading this book you will have the ideas and the techniques that you need to cause it to happen in your team. Once this happens, it can spread to the rest of the IT department. This is the kind of leadership that the company is looking for from their IT managers.

    Title: Enterprise in Action
    Subtitle: A Guide to Entrepreneurship
    Author: Peter Lawrence
    Narrator: Jeremy Clyde
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 9 hrs and 36 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-23-13

Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 2 votes

    Publisher's Summary:
This welcome new guide to the world of entrepreneurship offers invaluable lessons for the student and the practical entrepreneur alike. For the student it breathes fresh life into the standard curriculum topics, analyzing them in the context of a wide range of current real-world examples. For business practitioners it shows how practical success is influenced by factors such as industry dynamics, entry barriers, reconfiguration, and core competence.
Taking the reader through a variety of examples, mainly from smaller and/or newer companies in Britain and the USA, Enterprise in Action gives clear accounts of concepts and processes so that anyone can 'come on board'. Above all it provides a plausible 'action sequence' played out through the 11 chapters, showing the positioning and behaviour likely to lead to success.
Students will gain insights into key issues such as: What gives rise to entrepreneurial opportunity? How it is possible to exploit trends, and what are these trends? What is the role of innovation/originality? How do companies get started and become self-sustaining? What is 'execution', does it differ from implementation, and what is its role in business success? What do established SMEs (small and medium sized companies) do to survive in the middle term, and even across family generations?
Enterprise in Action illuminates the dynamics of enterprise creation and the development of SMEs over time, shedding important light on 'what seems to work' and what favours success over the long term in a volatile business environment.

A business book that delivers Q & As, with case studies to reinforce key principles and drive home core competences
A book that is geared toward the post graduate business student, as well as those entrepreneurial types who want gain insight as well core competencies that lead to being an effective entrepreneurial success. This is a readable text that gives the reader, a set of useful key summaries at the end of each topic section. This is done by the use of Q and A's to help reinforce areas of good practice as well as the essential tools, this then should hopefully deliver the message home. Certain areas that are discussed are; are how to exploit business developments, how to foster innovation, how to get supplementary funding for growth and where do entrepreneurial opportunities arise? There are also methodologies on how to exploit trends in the market place, and how and to foster innovation in the first place.
There is a lot here to better understand the successfully driven entrepreneurial process. In short there anecdotes as well as the authors 'other ideas', and it seems this has not gone down well has been critiqued negatively by one or two reviewers. However, this should not detract from the central tenets that of applied coverage on an array of key issues. As well as management on how to successfully address each of core competencies covered. At the end of the day the reader decides what he or she gleans from the text. This book is readable and not stuffy or stifling it does not roll out the same examples and company types, but rather gives an engaging format that delivers.

    Good fast read....
Good book. I could see my current company and past companies in the book. Makes you think on what you can do better.
You know who else burned books?
Wow, I thought the era of censoring books and speech was long past, in the United States anyway. I hear they still have government censorship in backwards places like China, Saudi Arabia, and Canada. Hey, remember all those movies and vitriolic screeds against black lists and enemies lists and shouts of "McCarthyism"? Guess it just depends on who's in the White House. I'm interested in starting my own company in the near future, but I bought this book mainly to support, ah shoot, what was that thing called again? Oh right, the first amendment. Plus the author's got brass and seems like men with brass are pretty rare these days, so I like to reward that. I'm just saying...
This man will not be intimidated
Thanks Yolanda! Yes this man went on national television to defend his rights to choose his own advertisers and not be intimidated by a politically organized and coordinated attack on a radio show he advertises on. Good for him. I just bought the book thanks to you Yolanda and will recommend to as many people as I can. Mark won't be intimidated and neither will the rest of us.

Great book. I read it for an entrepreneurship class and think anyone going into business or in the business field should read this book (or a book like it). Lots of practical applications. A bit repetitive and sometimes not very well organized, but plenty of good information.
    Best primer on sustainable business
I've been trying to keep up with every book about sustainable business that's been coming out (and there are a lot!). This book is the most succinct, easy to read primer on the subject I've seen yet. It covers every major topic that people are talking about, and is written in a very accessible style. If you want to read one book that covers all the bases, this is it.

The explosive rise and shining future of Santa Fe's informatics industry, where scientists are converting abstract theory into real profit.
How did a small southwest town transform itself into a hotbed of research science, advanced technology, and money? Tracking key figures in Santa Fe's emerging industries, Ed Regis explains how entrepreneurial scientists are using complexity theory and powerful, experimental computer programs to create practical - and profitable - applications. Their efforts to convert vast, diverse data, whether chemical or biological or computational, into useful information is leading to new drugs and medical therapies, ultimately revolutionizing our understanding of effective business strategies. With cutting-edge technology, companies are able to test chemicals, drugs, and interactions virtually before committing huge laboratory investments.
    Members Reviews:
Well Written and Researched Complexity and Santa Fe Hype
This is a well researched, well written, interesting book about scientists in Santa Fe developing entrepreneurial start-ups based on complexity science. The science and business combination is fun and wide ranging. It belongs to a genre of books about the Santa Fe Institute, of which Michael Waldrop's Complexity is one of the earliest and best. Many of the characters are the same in both books. My criticism of the Info Mesa is that much of it reads like publicity hype. It overstates the scientific accomplishments of the Santa Fe Institute and the importance of complexity research. It overstates the health of the tech business climate in Santa Fe. It romanticizes the people who work at SFI. It romanticizes the town in which they work. The descriptions of Santa Fe are so over the top as to be laughable to those of us who live here. Not even our tourist brochures hype Santa Fe so well. So, in conclusion, the Info Mesa's story isn't really so. All of you should just stay home, and leave Santa Fe to those of us who got here before you. ;-)
    Better than Mambo Chicken!
Ed Regis is an exceptional writer.
This book is actually based on research, or least we anticipate a journalist's report of details. If you read his earlier book Mambo Chicken and the Transhuman Condition you might choke on a few missing details. Ever hear of a transhuman? Regis applied this title grabbing "transhuman" to a few people who didn't know what the word was, let alone meant.
Regis' use of "transhuman" was wide of the mark. His writing was marginalized when he neglected to point out the transhuman futurists in Los Angeles. Even one who coined the term, let along with a hundred others. At least they called themselves transhumans, unlike the Silicon Valley geeks. But then Wired magazine appealed to Silicon Valley and LA was Hollywierd. Sounds like Regis was noshing his editors at Wired.
At least Regis is moving in an interesting direction with alchemy, can't factualize that.

Interesting start, switches to selling companies
The first hour of the book was interesting and relevant to me and asked the question, are you really an entrepreneur? However the book switches to the subject of buying and selling companies, which is totally out of my depth.Perhaps I'm under estimating audible listeners, but I would suggest 99.9% of us will never make a living buying and selling companies. But if you are ready for the big time and have lots of cash to do it,I would suggest this is the last place you need to be and instead need a degree and need to have studied for at least a year in business school. Also he mentions two websites, boffer and bigoffers.I checked them out and was totally underwhelmed by boffer and was disappointed at the rude and unprofessional language on the site. Also looked at the second site and it is just a holding page with coming soon on it.The author has a fortune of about 90 million, so I guess that is a good reference as any, but was very disappointed by those websites and expected more.
