Title: Trials and Tribulations (Unabridged)

Author: Theodor Fontane

Narrator: Peter Walters

Format: Unabridged

Length: 06:45:44

Language: English

Release date: 11-20-20

Publisher: Zebralution

Summary:

The gentle melancholy of two people coming together in a way which can never lead to full satisfaction, the quiet tragedy of a separation not forced by external powers but by the constant pressure of circumstances-this is what sounds through this splendid story. 'Trials and Tribulations' is built entirely on this motive. An honest sturdy young officer and a decent pretty girl get to know each other on an excursion. Unconsciously they drift into a relation where heart meets heart, the breaking of which causes the deepest pain. But both see clearly from the beginning that there is no other end. For they know that the world is stronger than the individual, and the many small moments than the one supreme.

Title: My Own True Ghost Story (Unabridged)

Narrator: Robin Nixon

Format: Unabridged

Length: 00:18:06

Language: English

Release date: 11-20-20

Publisher: Zebralution

Summary:

This tale was first published in The Week's News on 25 February 1888, and then included the same year in Volume 5 of the Indian Railway Library - The Phantom 'Rickshaw and other Eerie Tales. It was collected in Wee Willie Winkie and Other Stories in 1895, and in numerous later editions of that collection.

The narrator stays the night in a rather sinister old dâk-bungalow. During the night he hears the 'unmistakable' sound of a game of billiards being played in the non-existent room next door. In the morning the ancient servant tells him that in old times there had been a billiard-room there, and that one night one of the sahibs had fallen dead across the table. The narrator is excited to have found what seems to be an authentic ghost story. But then he hears the sound again; it was a little rat running to and fro inside the ceiling cloth, and his imagination had done the rest.

Résumé:

There's a whisper down the field where the year has shot her yield,

And the ricks stand gray to the sun,

Singing: -- 'Over then, come over, for the bee has quit the clover,

And your English summer's done.'

You have heard the beat of the off-shore wind,

And the thresh of the deep-sea rain;

You have heard the song -- how long! how long?

Pull out on the trail again!

Title: Metaphysical Poems (Unabridged)

Author: Andrew Marvell, Henry King, John Donne

Narrator: Steve Patriarca

Format: Unabridged

Length: 00:45:11

Language: English

Release date: 11-20-20

Publisher: Zebralution

Genres: Fiction & Literature, Classics

Summary:

Sex, science and spirituality! These were the triad of influences on the poetry of the seventeenth century. Following the golden age of Elizabeth I this century was to be one of great tensions; between Parliament and the Monarchy, Canterbury and Rome, science and religion; a civil war, the beheading of a King, The Republic, The Restoration, and finally, the Glorious Revolution which deposed a King and firmly reasserted the Protestant ascendancy.

The role of a poet could be a dangerous one; Milton of course was imprisoned and threatened with execution whilst others dare not publish in their lifetimes.

This selection of poetry chosen by Steve Patriarca draws on a group of poets commonly called the Metaphysicals or Metaphysical Poets.

Included in the selection is one reading which is not strictly a poem at all but a sermon by John Donne, where Donne uses the characteristics of poetry to make his point about sin and mortality. His images are so striking that they have passed into the common language most of us know the phrase for whom the bell tolls or no man is an island even if we do not know the source.

These poems have immense life and drama; they can be at once humorous and deeply emotional. They can also be great fun. But be warned. They can make you think!
