Title: [German] - Die neue Weltordnung
    Author: H.G. Wells
    Narrator: Oliver Rohloff
    Format: Unabridged Audiobook
    Length: 4 hours 57 minutes
    Release date: August 22, 2023
Genres: Current Affairs, Law, & Politics
    Publisher's Summary:

Title: Spies and Lies: How China's Greatest Covert Operations Fooled the World
    Author: Alex Joske
    Narrator: James Daniel Burkdoll
    Format: Unabridged Audiobook
    Length: 8 hours 6 minutes
    Release date: August 22, 2023
Genres: Current Affairs, Law, & Politics
    Publisher's Summary:
Spies and Lies a groundbreaking exposé of elite influence operations by China's little-known Ministry of State Security. Revealing for the first time how the Chinese Communist Party has tasked its spies to deceive the world, it challenges the conventional account of China's past, present, and future. Mere years ago, Western governments chose to cooperate with China in the hope that it would liberalize, setting aside concerns about human rights abuses, totalitarian ambitions, and espionage. But the axiom of China's 'peaceful rise' has been fundamentally challenged by the Chinese Communist Party's authoritarian behavior under Xi Jinping. How did we get it wrong for so long? Spies and Lies pierces the Ministry of State Security's walls of secrecy and reveals how agents of the Chinese Communist Party have spent decades manipulating the West's attitudes—from an Australian prime minister to the US Congress, prominent think tanks, and the FBI—about China's rise. Through interviews with defectors and intelligence officers, classified Chinese intelligence documents, and original investigations, the book unmasks dozens of active Chinese intelligence officers along with global MSS fronts, including travel agencies, writers' associations, publishing houses, alumni associations, newspapers, a Buddhist temple, a record company, and charities.

Title: Rocking in the Free World: Popular Music and the Politics of Freedom in Postwar America
    Author: Nicholas Tochka
    Narrator: Derek Dysart
    Format: Unabridged Audiobook
    Length: 9 hours 36 minutes
    Release date: August 22, 2023
Genres: Current Affairs, Law, & Politics
    Publisher's Summary:
Progressive and libertarian, anti-Communist and revolutionary, Democratic and Republican, quintessentially American but simultaneously universal. By the late 1980s, rock music had acquired a dizzying array of political labels. These claims about its political significance shared one common thread: that the music could set you free. Rocking in the Free World explains how Americans came to believe they had learned the truth about rock 'n' roll, a truth shaped by the Cold War anxieties of the fifties, the countercultural revolutions (and counter-revolutions) of the sixties and seventies, and the end-of-history triumphalism of the eighties. How did rock 'n' roll become enmeshed with so many different competing ideas about freedom? And what does that story reveal about the promise-and the limits-of rock music as a political force in postwar America?

    Format: Unabridged Audiobook
    Length: 7 hours 6 minutes
    Release date: August 15, 2023
Genres: Current Affairs, Law, & Politics
    Publisher's Summary:

    Narrator: Patricia Shade
    Format: Unabridged Audiobook
    Length: 12 hours 36 minutes
    Release date: August 15, 2023
Genres: Current Affairs, Law, & Politics
    Publisher's Summary:
As television began to overtake the political landscape in the 1960s, network broadcast companies, bolstered by powerful lobbying interests, dominated screens across the nation. Yet over the next three decades, the expansion of a different technology, cable, changed all of this. 24/7 Politics tells the story of how the cable industry worked with political leaders to create an entirely new approach to television, one that tethered politics to profits. In this timely and provocative book, Kathryn Cramer Brownell argues that cable television itself is not to blame for today's rampant polarization and scandal politics—the intentional restructuring of television as a political institution is. She describes how cable innovations took on network broadcasting using market forces, giving rise to a more decentralized media world. Brownell shows how cable became an unstoppable medium for political communication that prioritized cult followings and loyalty to individual brands, fundamentally reshaped party politics, and, in the process, sowed the seeds of democratic upheaval. 24/7 Politics reveals how cable TV created new possibilities for antiestablishment voices and opened a pathway to political prominence for seemingly unlikely figures like Donald Trump by playing to narrow audiences and cultivating division instead of common ground.

    Publisher's Summary:
Should we legalize marijuana? If we legalize, what in particular should be legal? Just possessing marijuana and growing your own? Selling and advertising? If selling becomes legal, who gets to sell? Corporations? Co-ops? The government? What regulations should apply? How high should taxes be? Different forms of legalization could bring very different results. This second edition of Marijuana Legalization: What Everyone Needs to Know® discusses what is happening with marijuana policy, describing both the risks and the benefits of using marijuana, without taking sides in the legalization debate. The book details the potential gains and losses from legalization, explores the 'middle ground' options between prohibition and commercialized production, and considers the likely impacts of legal marijuana on occasional users, daily users, patients, parents, and employers—and even on drug traffickers.

  • Nasty Politics: The Logic of Insults, Threats, and Incitement by Thomas Zeitzoff

Title: Nasty Politics: The Logic of Insults, Threats, and Incitement
    Author: Thomas Zeitzoff
    Narrator: Joel Richards
    Format: Unabridged Audiobook
    Length: 10 hours 7 minutes
    Release date: August 15, 2023
Genres: Current Affairs, Law, & Politics
    Publisher's Summary:
A novel explanation for why politicians insult, accuse, and threaten their opponents, even though voters say they don't like it. Why do politicians engage in nasty politics? Why do they use insult, accusations, intimidation, and in rare cases violence against their domestic political opponents? In Nasty Politics, Thomas Zeitzoff answers these questions by examining this global political trend in the US, Ukraine, and Israel and looking at how key leaders such as Trump, Zelensky, and Netanyahu use it. Drawing on surveys, case studies, in-depth interviews, databases of nasty politics, and large social media datasets, Zeitzoff shows that across all three countries, the public generally doesn't like nasty politics and it increases the threat of political violence. But it can also be a way to signal toughness to voters, which is especially important in threatening times. Featuring a powerful theory of why nastiness takes hold in democratic polities, Nasty Politics highlights how it influences the kinds of politicians who run for office and deepens our understanding for why so many politicians now rely on outsized anger and withering insults for political gain.
