The best story - ever ! Awesome narrator !!!!!!!!!
Would you listen to In Dubious Battle again? Why?
Yes, great story of the ever present struggle of Little Man and Big Man and how Group Man must be smarter than Small Men are dumb.
What did you like best about this story?
The narrator is fantastic - changes sound to capture all the characters (voices, personalities, etc). Steinbeck is the Yoda of exposing and exploring the nature of men. He brings in thru the back door and into the living room without telling you which house you are in
Which character as performed by Tom Stechschulte was your favorite?
    London
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Didn't want to "put it down", but it is pretty heady stuff, so you might need a break in the middle.
    Any additional comments?
This is better than reading it and better than a movie
    Gripping and relevant
I'd call this a political thriller. Was amazed at how relevant it still is. Steinbeck's command of story and character is excellent, as is the narrator's performance. Highly recommended, even for a first timer to Steinbeck.
    amazing
loved it! it was another awesome story from John steinbeck. from an Era that he does so well! highly recommend if you love john steinbeck do not miss this book!
    Seemed to drag on
    Any additional comments?
I'm new to audiobooks and Steinbeck, listened to Of Mice and Men and absolutely loved it. I do like how Steinbeck writes and describes everything. In Dubious Battle comes and goes with me. At times I really like the story then at times I feel like the story just keeps going and going and doesn't get anymore interesting. I have about 3-hrs left but doubt my opinion will vary much upon completion. However, I plan on listening to East of Eden and would like to listen to more Steinbeck. I would just think that there are better Steinbeck's out there. The narration is very good though.
selfless attempts to get decent wages for working.
If you could sum up In Dubious Battle in three words, what would they be?
    fighting the good fight
What was one of the most memorable moments of In Dubious Battle?
memorable is not the word. but i found these men had high values and they were selfless. they were fighting for every wage earner that was not being paid fairly for their work.
What about Tom Stechschultes performance did you like?
wonderful. and the reader brings a lot to the book. five star reader!
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
    swimming upstream
    Any additional comments?
this was not one of my favorite steinbeck books, but still i rated the story a 4. i think steinbeck could write a good book in his sleep. he just can't go wrong. he had so much talent!

Title: The Yellow Wallpaper and Other Stories
    Author: Charlotte Perkins Gilman
    Narrator: Kirsten Potter
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 4 hrs and 39 mins
    Language: English

    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 267 votes
    Genres: Classics, American Literature
    Publisher's Summary:
This collection brings together 12 of the finest short stories of prominent American feminist author Charlotte Perkins Gilman. "The Yellow Wallpaper", Gilman's best-known work, was first published in 1892 and represents an important examination of 19th-century attitudes toward women's physical and mental health. Written as a collection of journal entries by a woman whose physician husband has confined her to her bedroom, the story depicts the narrator's descent into psychosis as her confinement gradually erodes her sanity.
This collection also includes the stories "The Giant Wistaria", "According to Solomon", "The Boys and the Butter", "Her Housekeeper", "Martha's Mother", "A Middle-Sized Artist", "An Offender", "When I Was a Witch", "The Cottagette", "Making a Living", and "Mr. Robert Grey Sr."

    Feminist literature or Lovecratian horror?
Charlotte Perkins Gilman was famous as a 19th century feminist author, and apparently she's taught in a lot of feminist/women's studies courses. I was vaguely interested in her most famous story, The Yellow Wallpaper, so when this collection was an Audible deal of the day, I went ahead and downloaded.
I'm glad I did. I'll get to the title story in a minute, but I found the other short stories - which were all about a woman being presented with a choice (usually in the form of a man). Clearly there is a feminist undertone to each story, though bear in the mind this is 19th century "First Wave" feminism, so it remains largely a given that even a spirited, talented, independent-minded woman is still going to marry eventually. But Gilman was first and foremost writing short stories meant to have a beginning, middle, and end, and does not beat her readers over the head with any "message." In that respect, these stories were quite enjoyable, some of them having an O. Henry twist. I particularly , in which a moralistic, wealthy old spinster aunt promises her two nephews $50 (a small fortune, especially to children) if they forego butter for an entire year, believing butter is bad for children and too "rich." They do, and when the year is up, the old hag gives them their $50 in the form of membership pledges in a missionary society. The reader seethes with anger along with the boys at the injustice of it, but Gilman delivers a satisfying coda to the story.
Some of the stories are really just simple romances, though with a slightly feminist spin, but all of them showed that Gilman was a master of characterization and not bad as a prose stylist either.
Now, The Yellow Wallpaper is famous because it represents an early feminist look at the treatment of women and mental health. The main character is a wife suffering in the aftermath of some sort of nervous breakdown and made to stay in an upstairs room decorated with a hideous yellow wallpaper that she abhors. She wants to leave, she wants to do something, she craves mental stimulation, but her kind but egostistical and patronizing physician husband refuses to let her go anywhere or lift a finger.

    Publisher's Summary:
    Audie Award Nominee, Romance, 2013
Based on Johnston McCulleys The Curse of Capistrano first published in 1919.
Set in Los Angeles during the era of early 19th-century Colonial Spanish California, the story introduces us to wealthy, young aristocrat Don Diego de la Vega, son of the richest ranchero in the country.Don Diegois an idler who has never concerned himself with more than the cut of his clothes. Unlike other full-blooded youths of his age, he presents himself as a fop, lacking in vigor, vitality, and strength. But Vegas timorous reputation is merely a mask to conceal his alter egoEl Zorro. As Zorro, dressed in black and wearing a mask, he is transformed into a cunning swordsman who fearlessly pulls off dashing and daring escapades in his quest to avenge the helpless, aid the poor and oppressed, and punish cruel officials. Deemed an outlaw by Californias corrupt governor, he is ever-hunted by the Commandante of La Reina de Los Angeles, Capitan Ramón, and his henchman, Sergeant Pedro Gonzalez.
Forced to find a wife or lose his inheritance, Diego sets off to romance the fiery, outspoken Lolita Pulido, the most beautiful señorita in Los Angeles. Unimpressed with Diegos passionless efforts to win her affections, Lolita finds herself attracted to the dashing and courageous Zorro. With the Pulido family having beenimpoverished by the corrupt governor, her father would see her married to the rich Don Diego. At the same time, the nobly born but morally dissolute Captain Ramón has also taken an interest in the fair señorita, making matters worse. As tensions heighten between Ramón and the Pulido family and pursuit of the masked avenger intensifies, Zorro leaves his mark on those who would perpetrate injustice.
The Mark of Zorro, masterfully adapted into a full-cast audio drama by the award-winning Hollywood Theater of the Ear especially for Blackstone Audio, is an exciting, action packed, swashbuckling adventure that will have listeners on the edge of their seats.

    Over the Top Fun
It's sometimes easy to forget just how much fun Zorro really is, even with all the cheese of the genre and the naivete of the story. But as a lifelong fan of the character, I keep coming back time and again to sample the different versions, and invariably I walk away with a big grin when I find one like this. Zorro is best when played straight, even if the story around him is over the top, and Val Kilmer deserves high praise for pulling it off in classic style. If you know the story, have fun with this take on it. If not (how is that possible?!), this is about as good of an introduction as you could ask for.
    An excellent adventure story
Full of humor, snark and action, this audiobook is well worth the listen, though it alters a few things from McCulley's original version. The most notable alteration, and the only reason I gave this particular version 4 stars instead of 5, is that it entirely skips the d??nouement, a.k.a. the last couple pages of the written version. Audio listeners thus miss out on Zorro's reveal, which entirely changes the end of the story. It's a shame, really, because this is otherwise a gloriously fun recording.
    So much fun!
One of the best! An amazing cast including Val Kilmer mixed with music and great sound effects.

  • The Ransom of Red Chief Audiobook by O. Henry

Title: The Ransom of Red Chief
    Subtitle: An O. Henry Story
    Author: O. Henry
    Narrator: Deaver Brown
    Format: Unabridged
    Length: 29 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-04-11
    Publisher: Simply Media
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 16 votes
    Genres: Classics, American Literature
    Publisher's Summary:
"The Ransom of Red Chief" may be the most widely read story in grammar, middle, and high school. Young people can relate to 10-year-old Red Chief, his father who makes the kidnappers pay him back in order to take Red Chief off their hands (plus come in darkness so others dont jail them), and all the antics and excitement of it all. It is not read or heard widely after one leaves high school, which is a shame, because it is such a magical story about expectations being crushed by realities, and the turn of events, which O. Henry was so masterful at achieving, as in "The Gift of the Magi", the other best known O. Henry story, which Simply has also recorded.
A final thought for the listener: Is there anyone similar to O. Henry in style? We cant think of anyone, and that is another reason to listen to these stories. We believe most Southwestern humor in short stories is even better heard than read.
As with all Simply short stories, you should enjoy the ideas put forth in the introduction and afterword.

    Do not buy this rendition!
What did you like best about The Ransom of Red Chief? What did you like least?
I love this O. Henry classic. As always the irony of the characters and story line is entertaining.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Ransom of Red Chief?
Poor Bill is abused time after time by Red Chief. When he is the "hoss" for their excursion, Bill finally loses his patience and feels that he has finally triumphed.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Deaver Brown?
I would have cast anyone but this narrator. He stumbles over and mispronounces words. A large portion of sentences are left out. I tried to use this with my class, but after a couple of paragraphs gave up.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
I would definitely go see the movie.
    Any additional comments?
Audible needs to preview all material before putting out for the public.
    Hilarious proverb
This makes for side-splitting reading and, had the narrator been a smoother reader, would have been an even better listen.
No one can be less than delighted with Johnny, and we have to admit that Sam & Bill got more than their just desserts!
A gem of a story, but with edits
"The Ransom of Red Chief" is one of O. Henry's best-known short stories, with a plot that's easy to follow, but enough amusing twists, sparkling imagery, and oblique references to entertain adults as well as children.
The narrator has the perfect voice for reading this tale; I only wish that his presentation had been a bit more polished. There are a couple of pauses where he seems to stumble over a word, and his phrasing is occasionally a bit off. Also, although the text is unabridged, it has been edited - some words have been replaced with simpler or less offensive options ("undeleterious" becomes "harmless", "philoprogenitiveness" becomes "family ties", and the n-word is gone completely). Although I can understand the removal of "n*ggerhead" (an adjective used to describe a rock), I was disappointed that some of the more challenging vocabulary has also been removed. One of the joys of reading, for me, is the discovery of new words, and the enjoyment of the author's use of them.

Length: 21 hrs and 6 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-28-11
    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 48 votes
    Genres: Classics, American Literature
    Publisher's Summary:
Natty Bumppo , one of the greatest heroes in American literature, is the rugged frontiersman of James Fenimore Cooper's Leatherstocking Tales, a series of five novels that includes The Last of the Mohicans and The Deerslayer. Although it was the final volume to be written, The Deerslayer is the first in the chronology of Natty Bumppos life, depicting the character as a young man testing himself in the wilderness and against enemies for the first time.
Set in the 1740s just after the start of the French and Indian wars, the novel opens as Natty Bumppo---known as Deerslayer---and his friend Hurry Harry travel to Tom Hutter's house in upstate New York. Hurry plans to marry Tom's beautiful daughter Judith, while Deerslayer has come to help his close friend Chingachgook save his bride-to-be, Wah-ta-Wah, from the Huron Indians. When war breaks out and Hurry and Tom are captured by Indians, Deerslayer must go on his first warpath to rescue them. One of the earliest novels to be considered truly "American," The Deerslayer is a masterpiece of suspense, adventure, and romance.
    Members Reviews:
A careful writing but uncareful reading
I enjoyed the book even after learning that while this is the first of the five Leatherstocking stories chronologically, it was actually written last by Cooper. I had purchased the unabridged version read by Ray Todd but found it lacking. Peter Berkrot's reading is much better by way of accent, inflection, etc. Where his reading fails is in the recording. The audio drops out on a regular basis towards the ends of sentences. It's as if Peter pulled away from the mic at the same time he softened his tone. Listening as I did in a car, it was quite an annoyance. The producers should have caught this early on.
This isn't to say you won't like the book. The pace is as glacial as the Glimmerglass lake on which most of the story takes place. Still, though, it is quite nice to read a book from an author who so carefully spelled out the characters both in narration and dialog. Enjoy!
    Wow
Loved the passion. I could almost see the characters and scenery, and action scenes. Pray-Sing-HIM-All-Ways

    Title: A Tramp Abroad

Length: 14 hrs and 11 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-23-11
    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 76 votes
    Genres: Classics, American Literature
    Publisher's Summary:
In April 1878, Mark Twain and his family traveled to Europe. Overloaded with creative ideas, Twain had hoped that the sojourn would spark his creativity enough to bring at least one of the books in his head to fruition. Instead, he wrote of his walking tour of Europe, describing his impressions of the Black Forest, the Matterhorn, and other attractions.
Neglected for years, A Tramp Abroad sparkles with Twains shrewd observations and highly opinionated comments on Old World culture and showcases his unparalleled ability to integrate humorous sketches, autobiographical tidbits, and historical anecdotes in a consistently entertaining narrative.
Cast in the form of a walking tour through Germany, Switzerland, France, Italy, and England, A Tramp Abroad includes among its adventures a voyage by raft down the Neckar and an ascent of Mont Blanc by telescope, as well as the authors attempts to study art - a wholly imagined activity Twain authenticated with his own wonderfully primitive pictures. This book reveals Mark Twain as a mature writer and is filled with brilliant prose, insightful wit, and Twains unerring instinct for the truth.
    Critic Reviews:
[A Tramp Abroad] is delicious, whether you open it at the sojourn in Heidelberg, or the voyage down the Neckar on a raft, or the mountaineering in Switzerland, or the excursion beyond the Alps into Italy. (William Dean Howells)
    Members Reviews:
    A hoot
This is a hoot, as Mark Twain goes on a "walking tour" of the forests of Germany and the mountains and lakes of Switzerland. ("Walking" is in quotes because he spends most of his time on trains or cadging rides from raftsmen on the Nekar River.) There's quite a bit of real history and folklore here, as well as some beautiful travel writing; but Twain can't resist the temptation to pad his mountain-climbing and forest-browsing exploits with tall tales worthy of ... well, Mark Twain. It's hard to imagine that anyone could listen to Twain's description of arduously "climbing" one of the Swiss Alps -- actually, tracing the view to the top of the mountain by means of a hired telescope -- without roaring with laughter. His travelling companion, in real life the pastor Joe Twichell, here referred to as Twain's "agent, Harris," gets to play the straight man for much of Twain's humor. It's not as well known as some of Twain's other travel books, but it's as funny and delightful as the best of them. Grover Gardner gives his usual outstanding performance.
    Thoroughly enjoyable!
Few authors could ever come close to the nuanced comedy found in Twain. Poignant and hilarious moments all written masterfully. The appendix on the German language and boiling thermometers to mark altitude nearly killed me.
Grover Gardner is perfect and you feel as if Mark Twain is speaking to you directly.
A little slow, but still entertaining
I love to read travel stories about the places I visit before I go on trips, and I read this book before traveling to Germany. It does have some of Twain's signature wit and humor, but it also drags a bit at times. If you are a big fan of Mark Twain or have an interest in Germany or German culture, you will likely enjoy it. It is fun and entertaining at times, but it does not have the pacing or storyline that tend to make travel books gripping.

    Pleasantly surprised
I've been reading Miller's death of salesman as a part of a university course and this guide has been truly helpful, just remember that it is import and fun to first read the work, in this I recommend reading it twice before using cliffnotes, and then compare your own ideas, this course by cliffnotes actually gave me much more food for thought than the four lectures at uni, though of course some points of view from the professor were different as were some of my views, but this is a good thing since reader response is infinitive in nature. if you are doubting whether to buy the guide, do it!

    Five Stars
Well DUH - it's CliffsNotes so you can't go wrong.
I have loved the works of F
I have loved the works of F. Scott Fitzgerald for many, many years. I have also read his biography written by Sheila Graham.
Still, I found many new facts and explanations for his writing style in CliffsNotes. I enjoyed the book, very much.
My advice is to read The Great Gatsby and also CliffsNotes. If you read only one or the other you will be missing out on a
    lot of enjoyment.
