Keeping Faith

Wonderful story of a woman in a very difficult situation doing the best she can. Very colorful characters, especially the star of a successful anti-religious TV show, who is out to disprove her daughter's visions and gifts. Great narration and great ending. If you listen you'll be engrossed, regardless of your religious beliefs. First and foremost it's a story about a woman trying to keep her daughter. Enjoy!!

Crazy storyline but enjoyable

I am a big Jodi Picoult fan. I start every Picoult book with high expectations. During the first part of this book however, I was scratching my head. It was slow. I was determined to give the book a fair shake. And the slowness eventually gave way to Jodi's engaging writing style. There were three things that I felt weren't quite up to her usual standards: 1. ) the plot/story was a bit unrealistic for me (I am not religious). However, if you can suspend your personal beliefs the story is still well told. 2.) Typically, all of the characters in Jodi's books are very well developed, but I missed the full development and background for characters like the husband. He was pretty flat. And last of all 3.) if you listen to this book on an ipod, you will hear one of the narrators swallow and swish inbetween passages. This was like fingernails on the chalkboard to me, and even with my limited audio editing knowledge I recognized that those were items that could have been edited out of the recording.

However, despite these three things, I enjoyed the book and would recommend it. I was sad when the book ended. And with that, I give the book a solid four stars.

Good, but not my favorite

Don't read or listen to "Change of Heart" before "Keeping Faith"!!! A few of the characters from "Keeping Faith" come up in the more recent "Change of Heart" and I was disappointed when I realized that I already knew how some of the book would end. Otherwise, it was your typical Jodi Picoult book. I like them all, but the more of them that I read, the more they start to sound the same. I didn't realize that they would ALL (so far) have courtroom drama, medical issues, and an unusual number have involved organ donation. I'll still keep reading them, though.

just awful!

Jodi Piccoult is has a formula for her newest books. This is yet another book about a mother traumatized by the possible loss of her child. Long boring uninteresting trial takes up half the audio. I had to fast forward to get through it. I loved her earlier stuff, so I was very disappointed. I personally disliked the narrator who over acted each part. I cannot recommend this book.

Love Conquers All

Mariah could give us all hope that we can be stronger than we think, wiser than might have been expected and more generous than is deserved. As the leading character in Keeping Faith, I found her to be interesting and learning more about her and her daughter Faith kept me listening. Religion has always been a bit of a mystery to me and listening to how miracles might be examined from a number of different perspectives was an interesting thought examination.

More than a door in the floor

So many characters! Eddie, Marion, Ted, Thomas, Timothy, Ruth, Hannah, Harry, Mrs. Von, Alan, Graham; I would write Mr. Irving to tell him how I loved this book; how it made me feel, but when you read the book, you would know why I won't.

Give this book a try. I disagree with those that cannot find the beauty in it. I never have made comments on books I've read before because I've never felt I could write in a way that would have accurately conveyed how they make me feel.

You will be able to relate to the story and the characters. You will envy the author and his imagination. You will know and understand the characters. You will enjoy this book; immensely!

Returning to Amsterdam

John Irving has a fascination with the red-light districts of Amsterdam, detailed in another novel "Until I Find You." This setting and the author's exploration of many controversial sexual themes keep his books lively, entertaining, and engaging. His tight control of the narrative is also an hallmark of his method. I have enjoyed all but one of John Irving's books and would welcome audiobook versions of all of older works. We have too few of his many great works.

Great story and Excellent Narrator

I had seen the film A Door In The Floor which was based on this book and The Cider House Rules, and I was intrigued about John Irving's work. The book delves much further into the character of Ruth as both a child and an adult. Although I was disappointed with the ending because it felt like it ended too tidy, over all I thought it was amazing, and I am working my way through other Irving novels. His sense of irony and the way he gives the reader tidbits of information of what happens in the characters future, which they themselves don't know, leaves you wanting more all the time. The Narrator was amazing in this, and I recommend it just based on that.

Fabulous Story, Gets Better with Every Reading

I've read this book 4 times in the past couple of years, and enjoy it more each time I read it. John Irving is a master of character development, and the writing is impecable.

Suzanne Toren a makes a good book great

The terrific performance by Suzanne Toren made this good book great. She doesn't merely read the book, she breathes life into each character. Each person is utterly distinct and vivid. I'd like to recomment this book to my book group, but only if they listened to this version instead of reading it!

This is a best seller?

What a waste of my ears. I downloaded this book after reading glowing reviews of a work about post 9/11 life. It was an exercise in narcissism. The characters are self absorbed and though endlessly analyzing their own lives, have no real contact with the world outside of their egos. They go nowhere and do nothing, even as a collective tragedy occurs on their doorsteps.

Talk about the

The narration was good, but the book is not one that I can recommend. The characters, with the exception of one or two minor characters, were incredibly self-involved and annoying. I listened to the end, merely because I wondered if there would be any positive resolution to any of the story lines--there wasn't. It is difficult to care about the characters when they are so unlikeable. Although spouting rhetoric about the value of social conscience, none of the major characters acted in ways to support the rhetoric. The one character who did act responsibly (Marina's mother), was unfathomable to her family.

Great Book/Lame Director

I loved the book but wasn't crazy about the narrator. I really wanted a simpler, less obvious reading of what is a morally and intellectually complex story. I felt as though the reader didn't quite trust the writing to speak for itself so added unnecessary embellishment.

I felt that several of her characterizations were really heavy-handed. Instead of trusting the listener to determine a character's strengths and weaknesses she seemed determined to telegraph them for us.

Ultimately this overwrought interpretation rests squarely on the director's shoulders. It is the director's job to help the actor temper her reading. Because he didn't do this, the reader got in the way of the beautiful narrative flow of this magnificent novel.

Read Reviews Before Buying

This was one of those "why did I choose this?" selections for me. The majority of reviews state it like it is: a bunch of young adults whining about their sorry self-fulfilled lives. If that is your thing, go for it. But I need something a little more solid.

Bizarre

Jumping into a dark well to think to the point of starvation, characters that resemble caricatures, seem to appear and disappear with names such as Crete and Malta, a cat that comes back with a different tail... all this makes this book odd and amazing. This is my second book by this author and I remain intrigued by his storytelling and style. My issue is only with the violence, where the author dwells on wartime atrocities, taking care to describe torture techniques a bit too graphically for my taste. The audio is effective and keep you going until the end.

Wonderful

Bold. Funny. Horrific. Ethereal. And Fantastic in all senses of the word. Echoes of Dostoevsky, Kafka, Beckett. There are many, many memorable characters and scenes; but Murakami creates through these only the major pieces of a larger puzzle. He appears to be drawing parallels between two kinds of relationships (a) the interactions (loving, mundane, barbaric, kind, cruel, lustful, comic, duplicitous) humans have with each other and (b) the interactions (same list, pretty much) we have in our minds with our past, present, and future selves. These relationships cross and fade into each other so smoothly that neither we nor the characters are completely sure where one ends and another begins. A really wonderful book that feels like it will provoke thought for quite awhile.

Extremely worthwhile

I had read this book in hard copy. I enjoyed it even more listening to this audio version. The reader is brilliant, as is the novel. Be prepared for a surreal yet vivid, intriguing experience.

Fun Journey, but Lack of Resolution

3.5 stars. If you like Murakami, you will probably enjoy this. If you have not yet read a Murakami novel, I wouldn't recommend starting with this one -- it might prevent you from reading some of the most fun and engaging literature of modern times. Try Kafka on the Shore, perhaps.

Although generally engaging (I really did enjoy listening to the book), there are too many subplots that aren't adequately resolved, which left me feeling somewhat unsatisfied when I finished the book.

I've read elswhere that the original Japanese version was "stripped down" for the English translation as it was too long, and as a result, certain storylines being cut short. This is plausible.

The narrator is excellent.

very enjoyable listen

I found this to be a very entertaining story. This is not the type of book I usually buy, and I'm glad that I tried it! It's a wonderful tale with several other stories within. It is well written and well read - very enjoyable.

Classic.

I enjoy this author and have read many of his books but I must admit that after listening to this book, I realized that the book was written to be read out loud. I found it very enjoyable and was disappointed that audible only carried one other book--"the alchemist"--by this author. I loved it!

The Art of Storytelling

This is classic storytelling, and it is well done. Good vs. Evil with the hero/heroine facing a moral delima. The ending is not quite what I had wished, but if everything were as we expect, where is the suspense?

A battle between goog and evil

Well read. However, it would have been better to have a male narrator as well. This book captures the timeless battle between good and evil. The author uses his right once more to delve into the mystic to illustrate his point. Enjoyable listen

Terrible, although not as bad as The Pilgrimage

Would you ever listen to anything by Paulo Coelho again?

This is the second Paulo Coelho book I've read and it was better than the first (the truly terrible Camino de Santiago book) so maybe if I read another one it will be even better and I'll eventually like Paulo Coelho as much as everyone else seems to?

But the kind of woo-woo spirituality (much love to all abrahamic faiths but special shout out to Catholicism) on display is a lot for my skeptic mind to deal with.

Rip-offs of the Twilight Zone and Shirley Jackson's The Lottery are packed into a relatively short book but it still seemed too long. It could have been a 40 page short story.

I love Fannie Flagg

If you are a Fannie Flagg fan you will love this

story. You should really listen to Redbird Christmas and Standing in the Rainbow first as this one ends one of her characters. The people are so elegantly described you feel as if you know them and you become a part of this little town of quirky folks.

better if you're a fannie fan

When I bought this book, I didn't realize that the characters and town were from previous books. I think it makes a big difference in getting into the story. I almost shelved this one after 4 hours because it seemed to be going nowhere. I did persevere and thought it was an enjoyable book, although not great.

The first half of the book is pretty much character study. It felt like I was suppose to like these people and the town (which at first I didn't feel much affinity for either). It takes quite awhile for the story to take-off and as Fannie Flagg always does, she ties-up all the loose ends in the last chapter.

It's cute and if you're a Fannie fan, you're sure to love it. However, if you're not a Fannie fan, I would perhaps start with the other books in the series first or better yet, just listen to Fried Green Tomatoes or A Redbird Christmas.

If you're a fan of Southern fiction and looking for something new, Between Georgia by Josalyn Jackson is a real good one!

Not her best work

I was dissappointed in this book. It was kind of like eaves dropping on a boring conversation. I stopped listening midway through.

Whimisical but down-to-earth

First, I think the narrator was great! After all the story is set in Missouri, not the South. Even so Campbell catches both the rhythm of Flagg's prose and essence of the characters speech.

The story is not as sugar-coated as it might seem on the surface though it certainly lacks the bite of "Fried Green Tomatos" The character of Eliner is someone you wish you knew.

I am not really a fan of mythical small towns but I enjoy Elmwood Springs because although Flagg moved her story north the town is southern through and through.

Fascinating concept but something missing

Bee Season combines a young girl's unexpected gift for spelling with the exploration of her family's dysfunction and each family member's individual pursuit of spirituality even as the family pulls apart at the seams.

I love Goldberg's imaginative description of Eliza's experience with vowels and consonants as her spelling becomes more and more mystical. I also love the creative and beautiful depiction of Eliza's mother's obsession (I won't give anything away by saying what she's obessed with). But, some of the characters' motivations are unclear or not believable, and this makes some of the plot hard to swallow.

Also, I appreciate that Goldberg is reading her own book - but with only a few exceptions I find that actors or professional readers do a better job than the authors themselves, and this book is no exception.

Then on the positive side, Goldberg's discussion of Jewish mysticism and alternative religion is pretty fascinating.

So, I do recommend it but with some reservation. I'm curious to see the movie verion with Richard Gere and Juliette Binoche.

Goldberg's Delight

I tend to avoid fiction, but was encouraged by the reviews and friends to take this volume on. I did and I wasn't disappointed.

I seek out books that are informative, expand my sense of self and life, are well written and expertly read. This volume fills the bill on every front. This is the story of Eliza Naumann who suddenly discovers a talent for spelling and the associated competition - Spelling Bee. That is just another "coming of age" book with a grand exception. Myla Golberg has this quiet, unassuming way of letting the reader know what it is like to be part of a Cantor's family that is coming a part. She weaves wonderfully Jewish mysticism and compulsive behavior into a tremendous portrait that has revisited my mind often since reading. The portrait of how 9 year old Eliza learns to spell and her intricate relationship with her brother is worth the price of admission. Yet, there is much much more. This book was very satisfying to me.

Having never heard of the author or the book, I was bowled over by this book.

Fantastic narration of a modern classic

Samuel West's immaculate narration is the perfect gloss to one of the top books of the 90s and one of my personal favourites of all time. Obviously, if you have read the book before, then an abridged audio version is never going to be quite the same but, if you haven't, then you should find this presentation highly compelling and the abridgements are not apparant. It's a great story, impeccably researched and delivered with care. 4 stars is much as I can give an abridged book, and this earns each of them.

Very Moving

Birdsong depicts the close-up horrors of war better than any book I've ever read. The love story at the beginning was totally overshadowed by the scenes of battle (and in fact, it seemed rather unnecessary and digressive). A beautifully written novel, andt the narrator did it justice.

Magnificent Narration of a Great Book

I've listened to Peter Firth's wonderful narration of the Unabridged Version before and absolutely love this grand and passionate war story.

This version, however, delighted (or moved, to be exact) me even more. Samuel West's extraordinarily smoothing voice brought me into deep thought or let me burst into tears so spontaneously that I can't help feeling being part of the story.

Yet the loss of certain details in this abridged version is quite upsetting, especially the part where Stephen and Weir decided whether or not to kill a bird in the tunnel, or the soldiers singing the chessy ballad together to celebrate their being alive. After all, it's the details that impressed me the most when I first read it.

War book

The narrator did a fine job, and if you love Faulks you'll love this book - however I am not a huge fan of "war stories", so there were parts of this book that didn't work for me. However the narration style is calm, quiet, almost sad - which plays well with the tone of the story.

Not a fan

You will love this book if you like historical novels.

You will love this book if you want to know what trench warfare was like.

The narrator was excellent.

I am not sure how I made it through the story, but in the end found no enjoyment.
