David Federman has never felt appreciated. An academically gifted yet painfully forgettable member of his New Jersey high school class, the withdrawn, mild-mannered freshman arrives at Harvard fully expecting to be embraced by a new tribe of high-achieving peers. But, initially, his social prospects seem unlikely to change, sentencing him to a lifetime of anonymity. Then he meets Veronica Morgan Wells. Struck by her beauty, wit, and sophisticated Manhattan upbringing, David falls feverishly in love. Determined to win her attention and an invite into her glamorous world, he begins compromising his moral standards for this one, great shot at happiness. But both Veronica and David, it turns out, are not exactly as they seem.

Creepy Inner Dialogue of a Psychopath
What did you love best about Loner?
I certainly didn't love this book, but instead found it fascinatingly intriguing. The shift from first person to second person narrative gave depth to the character's deepening obsession.
Who was your favorite character and why?
    There were no favorite characters.
What about David Bendenas performance did you like?
He did a good job conveying the main character's inner dialogue.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
    It definitely creeped me out.
    Any additional comments?
This book provides a chilling glimpse into the compulsion of a psychopathic personality on a college campus.
    Well-Crafted, Caffeinated Rush
LONER is a well-crafted, caffeinated composition about a volatile, socially-impaired Harvard freshman from New Jersey and his poco loco fixation on an upper crust co-ed from Manhattan's upper East Side, who is not quite as transparent as she seems. Teddy Wayne builds this relationship slowly at first, then deftly manages a sort of whitewater rush where I kept looking for the next dangerous rocks.
The last 30 pages were like watching a long fuse burn toward a powder keg, or seeing another neurotic, introspective Hahvahd freshman Quentin Compson browse around Cambridge before diving into the Charles River--with Wayne's nod to Faulkner's The Sound and the Fury, as near the novel's end the anti-hero David sees the plaque that is actually now on the Anderson Memorial Bridge above the Charles which reads
    "QUENTIN COMPSON
Drowned in the odour of honeysuckle.
    1891-1910"
This highly clever fireball of a relatively short novel has an explosive ending with a few unexpected surprises. Wayne also toys with our expectations based on gender and socio-economic status. I highly recommend this if you like psychological character studies.
    When Harvard boys go bad
This is one of the most cringe-inducing books I've ever read. You can almost feel sorry for the protagonist throughout his self-serving narrative as he describes his freshmen year at Harvard, increasingly consumed by his obsession with a hot Manhattanite older girl, except that he's such a complete louse.
David Federman is a perfectly dull, if smart, Jewish boy from New Jersey. He's already a walking cliche when he arrives at Harvard - he was the smartest kid in his high school class, and good grades always came easily to him, but he is unable to grasp the fact that in Harvard, he is no longer the smartest guy in the room. Everyone was at the top of their class.

    Narrator's voice annoying.
I had a difficult time listening to the narrators voice. That made it difficult to enjoy the story.
    Disappointing
I never really connected with any of the characters. The accents used by the narrator made the dialogue difficult to understand at times. And, honestly, the "mystery" of the bones discovered at the beginning of the story is not much of a mystery.
    Love, Deceit and Mystery!
If you could sum up The House Between Tides in three words, what would they be?
    Intrigue, love, heartbreak
What was one of the most memorable moments of The House Between Tides?
The ending was not only a surprise but heartbreaking!
    Which scene was your favorite?
    The blossoming of forbidden love.
Who was the most memorable character of The House Between Tides and why?
Beatrice's character was not only memorable but I could relate to her heartfelt emotions and pain.
    Any additional comments?
The author did a great job of making the reader really experience Scotland both in the modern day and 1910. At several points I thought I had it all figured out and was very surprised by the ending. I would highly recommend this story.
Lovely story willing to buy terrible and the ration!
This is the worst near raider I have ever listen to fortunately the story was very good but even at that I still had to fight my way through her horrible dreadful voice! I will never buy anything that she narrates again
The performer sounded like a computer
In parts the performer sounded like it was computer generated. Truthfully it may not sound that way for some. It grated on my nerves. I abandoned listening a few chapters in.

Worst Boston accent Ive ever heard
That was the worst Boston accent Ive ever hears. Gross mispronunciation of several extremely common words and names. Kanye and Laphroaig off the top of my head.
    Great summer beach read!
This story was entertaining , light and had an air of truthfulness of how gossip spreads in a small town. I would highly recommend packing it in the beach bag for your next outing.

    The Bookshop on Rosemary Lane
What I love about this book is how the author wove the story of the heroine, Della's life (our collective story & journey as women) infusing all the surprises, hardships & disappointments with a stronger, personal intention and inspiration. In other words, in the face of each trial (and this story is laced with a myriad of relatable circumstances we face every day) Della chooses to focus ahead on her goal, put it first, and not wallow in life's distractions. I found myself inspired and introspective.
    A Book for Bedtime
Thoroughly enjoyed this read, shall look for more of her books for future reading, hopefully soon.
    Awful
I really struggled to get as far as chapter 4 in this book hard work
    Doormat Della wakes up
Oh what a doormat Della was, I felt like she was never going to take off the rosy coloured specs, the pace of the book was slow at the beginning, and at the end seemed hurried in the extreme, but as a general story, I liked it.

Hannah and Kate became friends in the fifth grade, when Hannah hit a boy for looking up Kate's skirt with a mirror.
While they've been close as sisters ever since, Hannah can't help but feel envious of the little family Kate and her husband, David, have created - complete with two perfect little girls. She and Ben have been trying for years to have a baby, so when they receive the news that she will likely never get pregnant, Hannah's heartbreak is overwhelming. But just as they begin to tentatively explore the other options, it's Kate's turn to do the rescuing. Not only does she offer to be Hannah's surrogate, but Kate is willing to use her own eggs to do so.

    Loved everything about this book!!
I really liked the story line, was very real and timely to recent news as of late. Loved the narration, characters were great! Just a good book. Very quick listen.
    Heart rendering beautiful!
Beautifully performed and exquisitely written! There is tragedy, hope and breathtaking love in this story!
Incredibly annoying main character ruined the story!
The main character, Hannah, is so moody, self-righteous, and bitchy, that it's really difficult to root for her as the story progresses. She has several tantrums throughout the story, never stopping to consider the consequences of her actions (much like a toddler). While the premise of the story is good, I can't recommend this book because of the main character. I had zero sympathy for Hannah and I found myself wishing she would pull herself together, act like an adult, and stop treating people so poorly.
How is it possible to dislike all the characters?
I found the two main characters to be whiny and annoying. I did something that I have never done before and that is fast forwarded to the end. The ending was the only redeeming quality of this book.
    Amazing
This was a great book about love and friendship. The ending was not what I expected, but it was good. Kept me on the edge of my seat and was an emotional roller coaster. I highly recommend.

    Language: English
    Release date: 07-07-16
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 6 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
Naomi Alderman's The Lessons reflects the truth that the lessons life teaches often come too late.
Hidden away in an Oxford backstreet is a crumbling Georgian mansion, unknown to any but the few who possess keys to its unassuming front gate. Its owner is the mercurial, charismatic Mark Winters, whose rackety trust-fund upbringing has left him as troubled and unpredictable as he is wildly promiscuous.
Mark gathers around him an impressionable group of students: glamorous Emmanuella, who always has a new boyfriend in tow; Franny and Simon, best friends and occasional lovers; musician Jess, whose calm exterior hides passionate depths. And James, already damaged by Oxford and looking for a group to belong to.
For a time they live in a charmed world of learning and parties and love affairs. But university is no grounding for adult life, and when, years later, tragedy strikes, they are entirely unprepared.
Naomi Alderman grew up in the Orthodox Jewish community in Northwest London. Her first novel, Disobedience, was published in 10 languages and won the Orange Award for New Writers and the Sunday Times Young Writer of the Year prize. Like her second novel, The Lessons, it was broadcast as Radio 4's Book at Bedtime. She is a frequent radio broadcaster, and she is a regular contributor to several publications, including the Guardian and Prospect. She lives in London.
    Critic Reviews:
"Sharp, funny and poignant." (Hilary Mantel)
"Funny, tender and insightful." (Maureen Lipman, Guardian)
    Members Reviews:
Where has this book been hiding?
Would you consider the audio edition of The Lessons to be better than the print version?
I read about it on an Audie page. The performance is great, I am going to look up books by Jot Davies. And, the writing is top rate. The wording just tickles me, only way to describe it. I find myself in the car, listening and nodding at a great turn of phrase read by the brilliant Jot Davies.
    Loved it.
Where does The Lessons rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
Very highly. It is an example of a book that I've enjoyed more as an audio than as a print book. The performance really brought it to life.
What other book might you compare The Lessons to, and why?
There is a range of semi-autobiographical books by contemporary authors, especially Jewish authors, available at the moment.
What about Jot Daviess performance did you like?
    Captured the different voices beautifully.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No. I enjoyed absorbing the characters over a period of time.
    Any additional comments?
Great book, great performance by narrator.
Well written, well narrated but not MY THING
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
NO, simply because I have struggled to get through the listen and have now decided not to bother with the end.
What could Naomi Alderman have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Nothing. I just chose the wrong book. I have gay friends and a gay relative and have no problem with homosexuality as long as I don't have to view or listen to gay sexual scenes. I would be grateful if you would keep "gay" literature in that category to avoid this happening.

    Title: In Twenty Years
    Subtitle: A Novel
    Author: Allison Winn Scotch
    Narrator: Julia Whelan
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 9 hrs and 57 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-01-16
    Publisher: Brilliance Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 676 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
Twenty years ago, six Penn students shared a house, naively certain that their friendships would endure - until the death of their ringleader and dear friend Bea splintered the group for good. Now, mostly estranged from one another, the remaining five reluctantly gather at that same house on the eve of what would have been Bea's fortieth birthday.
But along with the return of the friends come old grudges, unrequited feelings, and buried secrets. Catherine, the CEO of a domestic empire, and Owen, a stay-at-home dad, were picture-perfect college sweethearts - but now teeter on the brink of disaster. Lindy, a well-known musician, is pushing middle age in an industry that's all about youth and slowly self-destructing as she grapples with her own identity. Behind his smile, handsome plastic surgeon Colin harbors the heartbreaking truth about his own history with Bea. And Annie carefully curates her life on Instagram and Facebook, keeping up appearances so she doesn't have to face the truth about her own empty reality.
Reunited in the place where so many dreams began, and bolstered by the hope of healing, each of them is forced to confront the past.
    Members Reviews:
Saint Elmo's fire meets the Penn Quakers
Old friends are really worth the effort. That is the essential message of this novel. Allison Winn Scotch and Julia Whelan are a formidable new team. As always, Ms. Whelan makes a good book a great listen. Ready for a screenplay, the story will entertain you throughout and have you reflecting on your own long-term friendships that may need some rekindling.
    Well written unlikable characters
There were seven main characters in this book, and only one - arguably and minor character - was likable. The rest were whiny, selfish, and childish. Or dead. They were also unbelievable; out of six characters, three are not just good at their careers, they are among the best. The chances of having one star in a group of six college friends is slim, but to have half of them not just excel, but be the best is ludicrous. However, the wordsmithing and performance save this book from being unlistenable. It was worth the two-for-one sale purchase, but I would have been disappointed if I had used a full credit on this book.
    Superb performance!
The reader acts out the novel as if it were a movie, bringing it to life.
    No sympathetic characters
This book wasnt for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
Someone who enjoys lots of drama in their life and in their fiction. This book is about many missteps a group of friends have taken over the years. So many characters and so many poor decisions were evident in this book, I wondered if any of these friends developed coping skills at all. How many 40 year olds can't "handle" a friends funeral? The end of the book is somewhat redeeming, but not quite enough for me to recommend this title.
Has In Twenty Years turned you off from other books in this genre?
No, I would be open to this genre.
    Which scene was your favorite?
The scenes in general with the deceased friend. She was the only remotely likable character.
What character would you cut from In Twenty Years?
The woman who is the home entertaining expert--she is messed up!
    Great story, unnecessary cursing
I'm no prude and can let the language fly from time to time but when I hear foul language being used incessantly it detracts from the message.

    Title: Rules for a Knight
    Author: Ethan Hawke
    Narrator: Alessandro Nivola
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 2 hrs and 14 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-10-15
    Publisher: Brilliance Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 133 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
It is 1483, and Sir Thomas Lemuel Hawke, a Cornish knight, is about to ride into battle. On the eve of his departure, he composes a letter to his four young children, consisting of 20 virtues that provide instruction on how to live a noble life and on all the lessons, large and small, that he might have imparted to them himself were he not expecting to die on the battlefield.
"Why am I alive? Where was I before I was born? What will happen to me when I die? Whatever well our lives are drawn from, it is deep, wild, mysterious, and unknowable...."
Rules for a Knight is many things: a code of ethics; an intimate record of a lifelong quest; a careful recounting of a knight's hardest won lessons, deepest aspirations, and most richly instructive failures; and an artifact, a relic of a father's exquisite love.
Drawing on the ancient teachings of Eastern and Western philosophy and religion, on literature and poetry, and on the great spiritual and political writings of our time, Ethan Hawke has written a parable that - in the story of a young man's journey toward a life of authenticity and meaning - captures the instinctive movement of the heart toward truth and beauty. Rules for a Knight has the appeal of Arthurian legend; the economy of Aesop; and the vitality, intelligence, and risk-taking that could emanate only from Ethan Hawke.
    Critic Reviews:
"[Narrator Alessandro] Nivola uses grandfatherly tones - melodious, deep, and enchanting - to draw listeners in. Using lyrical tones, he BECOMES the knight who writes his timeless advice for his sleeping heirs." (AudioFile)

    Awesome!!!
This book is great for anyone. It teaches principles that everyone aspiring to be a better person should live by. My wife and I even read the hardcover version of this book to our children for them to learn from the guidelines and direction given in these teachings and rules.
    fabulous!
I loved this! listened to it twice in 24 hours! Great rules to live by covered with an interesting story.
    Misleading.
What would have made Rules for a Knight better?
Not pass it off as historical. I realize you could search for the author and information but if you just, as I did, pick up the title and go by the introduction you would be confused if you are familiar with Eastern philosophy.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Rules for a Knight?
The discoveries I kept making that left me to stop listening altogether which is Its blatant rehashing of various wisdom quotations from different countries in the past and passing it off as a singular work.
You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
It modernizes older words of wisdom for a new day which is a positive I suppose.
    Parables for Upright Person
Enjoyable uplifting book with a story of a Knight giving teachings through parable for his children before he goes to battle. This book was recommended by Rich Dad Poor Dad author Robert Kiyosaki as must read spiritual book and I would agree. Divided into short chapters makes a good inspiration read every now & then
This is the book you should read!
If you could sum up Rules for a Knight in three words, what would they be?
Simple, elegant, and straightforward. Meaningful, concise, and moving.
