Publisher's Summary:
Released in 1974, Sweet Home Alabama has become synonymous with Southern rock. From its opening guitar riff, it is instantly recognizable, a raucous, irreverent defense of a Deep South state and its segregationist governor against the jabs of Neil Young. But the roots of Lynyrd Skynyrd's best-selling anthem go much deeper than regional pride or resentment of a fellow rocker. In this fresh take on the history of an oft-debated rock classic, journalist Jonathan Bernstein traces the tune's surprising centuries-old origins and incredible global influence, which continues to this day. Sweet Home Everywhere is the story of a song that has enthralled, enraged, and confused listeners for 40 years.
Jonathan Bernstein is a freelance music journalist and fact-checker based in New York. His writing has appeared in Oxford American, Rolling Stone, Time, and American Songwriter, among others.

Fantastic Read!
As a lifelong fan of southern rock, I cannot recommend this work highly enough. Sweet Home Everywhere is clearly the product of meticulous research, vividly tracing the history of one of Americaâs classic rock and roll songs. That said, the authorâs abilities as a storyteller are on full display, as he takes what could have been an academic work of cultural history and turns it into a story as vivid and engaging as the songs of the musical tradition Sweet Home Alabama is such an important part of.
When this was recommended to me by a music writer friend, I was skeptical, because I wasnât sure what more could be said about a song that has been a staple of American rock music for forty years. Needless to say, I am thankful I went ahead and read it anyway, as Sweet Home Everywhere presents a new an engaging perspective that will change, for the better, the way you listen to Sweet Home Alabama.
Sweet Home Everywhere
"Sweet Home Everywhere" follows the story of Skynyrd's classic from Muscle Shoals of Alabama to Jerusalem, Iraq, Tuskegee, and pretty much everywhere else. Great characters throughout -- Van Zant's old friend Gene Odom gives a standout interview. The author clearly loves Sweet Home and sketches its complex history with care and reverence. Well-suited for Skynyrd/Southern Rock fans, listeners who want to understand what Drive-By Truckers' Southern Rock Opera is all about, even those Neil Young devotees (I'm all three of these). Just be sure to have YouTube at easy access while you read -- you're going to have a million new things to listen to.
Interesting read!
I'm not much of a Lynyrd Skynyrd fan, but for $2.99 I thought I would give this book a try. I'm really glad I did! The author takes the classic song (and really, who doesn't love Sweet Home Alabama?) and brilliantly lays out its history, politics, and many renditions.
