Delightful historical mystery

Concordia does it again. She manages to get embroiled in quite an intrigue involving a garroted woman, a missing child, a secret society and politics. She cant just let it go when someone near and dear to her needs help. And thats what we love about Concordia. I read book one in this series but not book two, before delving into book three. I had no problem following the story or the relationships between the characters having missed the second book, but I would not recommend you read this without having read at least the first one. I suppose you *could* read it without the background knowledge of the characters, but it might not be quite as enjoyable. I recommend this to readers who enjoy historical mysteries featuring strong female leads.

Narrator Becket Royce, once again, does an very good job. I did have to turn the speed up to 1.25 in order to get the proper pacing for my taste, but she does a great job with the different voices, including the male characters. This audiobook is well worth the Audible credit and I think it would also be very enjoyable in print.

Owen Archer is helping to train the archers the Duke of Lancaster needs for a brewing war. A nun has gone missing, died, and returned from the dead. The Archbishop sees a connection and sets Owen to getting to the bottom of what the nun was up to during her 'death' and what she knows about treasonous captains. Lucie meanwhile is pregnant and dismayed that her father is visiting and to make matters more interesting is the only one who can calm the strange nun. Owen eventually gets the whole story mostly from obscure ramblings from the nun and legwork with his old friends

Like this series of books, good reads.

While this is not my favorite in the series it is still quite good. I love these characters and the settings. I find the stories very believable and they quickly pull you into the intrigue. I am happy to know that there are many more to follow. Different from the court stories and seemingly well researched and true to the era. The author really gives you the feeling of living in the time period with all it's dirt and discomfort and difficulties. She does all this while keeping you concerned and caring for her characters. Highly recommend these stories. Can't wait to read more about Owen Archer and Lucie.

I have enjoyed the 3 novels I've read in the Owen Archer series, as entertaining glimpses of li. e in 14th century York, England Historical mysteries is my favorite genre for leisure reading and these 3 novels are all equally engaging from start to finish--and all without resorting to 4-letter words. The violence , because eand one deals with murders--is told straight forwardly, without undue blood and gore. Each deals with sex as a normal part of life,, without being too graphic, except for the incestuous love in "The Nun's Tale". I like the principal characters, and the plots are realistic, although grounded in the history of that era. I will surely read other novels in this series for my own pleasure and leisure.

Another good effort in the series.

The relationship between two of the main "villains" was telegraphed fairly early on in the book so there was little surprise when it was finally revealed.

Nice reading

Not my favorite time period but Edward Marston makes it palatable. I like his other series better especially the Railway Detective and the Doomsday Books.

Mislead

The cover you are showing is the book I thought I would receive so that it would match the set. It was the cover for that vendor's listing. Instead I received another cover and had to gift a non-matching set. Otherwise, the book was in mint condition. _

An excellent continuation of the saga of Christopher Redmayne

Continuing the story of Christopher Redmayne (this is actually the book that comes prior to the Parliment House I read earlier this year), this book delves into some family dynamics as we are introduced to his pleasure seeking brother who is accused of murdering a fencing master. London politics are slightly explored with discussions on the right of the King, the role and rights of forgieners, however Marston masterfully slips small details into the story without making them feel preachy or overbearing. Instead he is able to weave comments on politics, social castes, and historical details without drowning the story in details that so often drag and slow a story. The continuing saga of Christohper's love for Susan is interesting as we learn the nuances of love and courtship in the late 1600's.

All told I found this book to be an easy read, something that many historical dramas cannot claim, enjoyable and engaging. Edward Marston manages to make a historical dramatic mystery that is a wonder to read, and makes you want to continue to the next book wondering if Christopher will ever manage to prove himself to Susan's family and spend a happy life with her as his wife.

I highly recommend this entire series, having read the first two books available in America I can say this is one of the most enjoyable series I have read.

A Frozen Thames, What a Sight To See

Edward Marston's books about the architect Christopher Redmayne are well worth reading. The character is now becoming established in his own right. Initially I wanted to compare him with characters in some of Mr. Marston's other excellent offerings, Nicholas Bracewell etc. but now Christopher Redmayne stands out as the architect who not only want to put his stamp on London after the Great Fire, but is also making quite a name for himself as an amateur sleuth adept at solving some of the many crimes that take place in the great city. To assist him in these matters he has the assistance of his friend, constable Jonathan Bale.

The year is 1669 and winter has come down on the City of London with an iron fist. It is the coldest winter for many years, cold enough to make the great river Thames freeze over. When this event happens the merchants and entertainers make good use of the frozen river by holding a fair on the ice.

However the revelries are soon cut short when Redmayne and the constable discover a corpse trapped in the ice.

Plotty Marvellous!

Im the first to admit that my favourites in this series have seen the boys out there on campaign sticking it to some horde of hairy-arsed barbarians especially us Brits! The cloak and dagger stuff Im not normally not quite so keen on but this one just got me from the start. How Cato hasnt quite lost his marbles completely is hard to fathom because Scarrow suddenly seems to have taken an extreme dislike to him and no amount of torture for him personally seems too much. In this we see more of the development of Cato as a man, a harder edge, a more cynical side coming to the fore. But hes still a genuine hero and a man of honour. Macro, well age is catching up on him but hes still Macro and we wouldnt have him any other way! Blunt, direct, violent but has he finally met his match in a woman?

Our heroes are pitched into a Rome heaving with unrest following the death of the Emperor and Neros ascension to the purple. The whole place is seething with plot and counter plot and ready to erupt at any moment. Cato and Macro just want to be soldiers but Cato in particular is too valuable for either side to leave him alone and ghosts of the past come back to haunt him. Its brilliant, fast-paced stuff with no quarter given or asked for and as usual Mr Keeble brings it to life in the manner to which weve become accustomed.

Cato tries to think his way through while Macro takes his usual battering ram approach throughout. I do promise you will be cheering him during the cliffhanger scene towards the end! I dont know how long Simon Scarrow plans to keep these two going but Ill be following them to the end!

One of the best yet for Scarrows, Cato & Macro duo

I have read and listened to all of the previous Eagle (Cato & Macro) books and have enjoyed all of them, some more than others naturally, this book I was totally absorbed with and found the plot and pace of the book excellent. The narration as usual by Jonathan Keeble made the book a pleasure to listen to. I look forward to the next instalment.

Cant Wait for the next story.

I have always been a history buff and WW11 has been a favorite. Especially the undersea life of Silent Service. If you like constant action packed stories do not miss this novel. Could not put the book down. Cold and snowy day and read even in middle of a ballgame. That Good.. Now we can look forward to Mr. DiLouie finishing #5. Hope Soon.

It reads well as a stand alone book but .. It is one of a series of four and while the plot changes the story line does not from book to book. In point of fact on three subs if two skippers died and one became disabled on three successive patrols, the hero would never get another berth on a sub. Too much superstition in WWII USN.

Loved it

I absolutely love this series. Every new book cranks up the suspense more than the last. Looking forward to the next in the series!

Great writing but too much gore.

Penny is an interesting and entertaining historical mystery writer, but why is there so much blood and guts on these pages? We can go for a hundred pages of interesting character and plot development, and then there are several murders with body parts flung all over the place. Just too much mayhem for me in a series that should be much more even keel. A 3.5 for the brutality.

Really enjoyable read.

Really enjoyed the book the last of a series of three. The main character is not immediately exposed totally as to what sort of person he is...his character is eked out over the series, which makes him intriguing and makes me look forward to further stories. Apart from the crime, the practice of medicine at the time, The detail about the politics and intrigue within the Alhambra and the Harem makes for very interesting reading.

The Sin Eater

I like followup from the previous book and the personal and political lives interwoven along with the murder mysteries of them.

The research done which is the main part of the story, is the best way to learn about a time unfamiliar with a little about the personal lives of those historical figures.

Not a bad mystery in the Thomas Berrington series. Good perspective of life in Moorish Spain near the end of the al Andalus kingdom prior to the time when Ferdinand of Spain completes his conquest of the rest of the Moorish kingdom.

Great Medieval sluething continues.

Great follow up to Penny's other books in the series. Can't wait for volume 5, The Inquisitor.

Good second book of the trilogy

Lots of twists and turns right up to the end. So many peripheral people die that I'm wondering who's left for the last book.

One warning- this book is preceded by a history book (or excerpt) about some of the locations featured in the first ciudad Blanca book. I didn't realize this and thought it was some sort of long prologue to the actual book. If you like history, it's interesting. However if you are just looking for a novela policiaca, skip ahead to around chapter 10 (I'm not sure of the exact chapter). If you don't , it adds 2-3 hours to the listen!

WOW!

Another genealogical mystery gets knocked right out of the park by this author!

Began reading it the morning it was released, but had to stop due to Life (GRRRR!). I was able to begin reading it in the evening, and read straight through, minus one brief break, until I finished in the wee hours of the morning.

What a ride! This author is one of my favorites, and I found only one minor error, but that was only because he used "in hospital" instead of the American "in the hospital". Totally minor.

Can't wait for the next book!

I really enjoyed this book. It's one of his best, I think. Good plot!

Genealogy mystery and history combined

I love this series. A favorite scene in this book brought tears to my eyes - as the women watch war-torn airplanes returning to the airfield after a battle. Great historical and genealogical aspect. Another good book in the series!

Goodwin's books in order and have thoroughly enjoyed all of them

I have read all of Mr. Goodwin's books in order and have thoroughly enjoyed all of them. As a genealogist I appreciate the main character's approach to solving the various family dynamics, twists and turns and how he weaves in the historical background as the story unfolds. But above all, the writing is wonderful. I am looking forward to the next mystery novel.

Historic Fiction at its finest

This book, set in World War II Switzerland is an amazing continuation of the Billy Boyle series. Fast paced and full of intrigue and action, there is no down time. The story is in retrospect, a very accurate portrayal of the "neutral Swiss government" during the war. Few at the time knew or at least acknowledged that Switzerland was very involved, from a banking and manufacturing stance, in supporting the Nazi regime and victimizing Jews. It is true Switzerland was neutral, but it was just more neutral to some than others. This is that story of active and passive assistance some Swiss provided to Nazi Germany. This is a fast and easy, fully engaging, World War II story.

Great job by James Benn once again !

The Devouring explores and exposes the complicity of the Swiss government in aiding and abetting the Nazi's during WW2. It is generally an unknown aspect of the conflict and one that has not been talked about enough. Benn does a great job of weaving in the complex government relationships in dealing with corporate interests and the lack of morals that play into profiteering. Peter Berkrot does a great job as usual with narration and drives the pace of the book nicely.In all a highly recommended listen.

Kit Alvarez comes through . . .

. . . almost as well as the previous five adventures. However, this book lacked the villainous presence that created suspense in previous installments. Boris Godunov was evil enough, but was only physically present in one short scene, and a far-off threat as pursuers rarely came close enough to Kitâs small party bent on rescuing a British spy who had disappeared in Russia. The marrano issue scarcely flickered, and the young womanâs disguise issue only the briefest of glimmers. The implied romance with Simon was on hold, too, for 4/5 of the book, as they Players returned to England after only a month or two in Muscovy. Without the intrigues of Walsinghamâs spy ring, how can the saga be sustained any further? Weâll see what Will Shakespeare can boil up for us in the next novel!

another hit.

the tale of a woman pretending to be a man during the Elizabethan period is fascinating, as are the insights into the Jewish community of the period. This tale, as the title indicates, is in regards to the Russian / English trade routes, something that isn't addressed in most historical works. The political aspects are well woven into the story -- giving insight and germane to the story. I very much have enjoyed this series.

Not much plot

This book is one long, slow slog through medieval Russia. There is not much plot and very little mystery. It's better than The Portuguese Affair, which I couldn't bear to finish. Ms Swinfen is a good writer, so the book held my interest. But I was shocked when I noticed that I was 90% of the way through the story as I was still waiting for the mystery. Well worth reading if you are a Swinfen fan, but not the best book of the series. I'm glad there are more books left in the series for me to read.

A fine addition to a great series

This is a wonderful series about a girl who is disguised as a man so she can practice medicine in Elizabethan England. In this specific novel she is recruited to go to Russia to visit the English Moscovy Company operating there and to search out a spy.

Through Darkest Russia!

A VERY good Christoval Alvarez story, I love the author's portrayal of period Russia. Now that I have read all as of 2017, I worry that the author may not continue the series... and I hope that despite the difficulties, Ann Swinfen will follow through.
