Missing Mystery in Malta

Both the mystery and Malta are missing. This story could be set anywhere, any time. An almost total lack of detail for setting, clothing, culture, arts, leave the reader ungrounded. If a couple characters didn't mention 1913 and a possible war with Germany, it would be difficult to place the story in any time period. The story is mostly talking heads, Tag lines make up a large part of the text.

The supposed main character, Inspector Seymour from the British Foreign Office, barely appears in the story. The mystery and the murder are overwhelmed by lengthy, repeated stories about village rivalries, bands, sporting events. The revelation of the murderer was

underwhelming. I still don't understand the motive for the murders.

Great Fun Book

I loved this series and I am sorry this will be the last one of the series. I have the entire series and I just love it. There is mystery, humor, and great writing.

The focus is the murder in a hospital of a German Ballonist and later we discover there were other suspicious deaths. In solving these murders Seymour as always works well with the local people and fits into his surroundings.

Michael Pearce has written several detective series set in pre-WW1. He has the Mamur-zapt set in Egypt and now Seymoour who goes to various countries to solve problem for the Foreign Office.

The author was born in the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan and served in Egypt. He really knows the various areas he portrays in his books from having been and served there. His books always have an authentic air about them.

As always Michael Pearce really understands the period and portrays it very well. There is always humor in his books which makes them doubly enjoyable. They are not long books and listening to them goes fast as they are so fascinating.

Clive Mantle does an excellent job as narrator and is good at different voices.

Fascinating psychological exploration of suppressed memory -- and a terrific mystery to boot

As much psychological novel as murder mystery, Locked Rooms alternates between the first-person narrative of Mary Russell and third-person sections telling the parts of the story which Mary could not, at the time, have known. This is important, for Mary in this book is a most unreliable narrator, her memory not so much faulty as suppressed. The death of Maryâs family in 1914 and the 1906 San Francisco earthquake are the twin foci of investigation, though Mary seems unaware for much of the novel that there is, indeed, anything to investigate. As a historical mystery, it is engrossing; as a psychological exploration into memory (and into the character of Mary Russell), itâs fascinating.

As Mary Russell and husband Sherlock Holmes, who is at present about three times her age, head from Tokyo to San Francisco via ocean liner, Mary nearly falls overboard without realizing she is leaning too far. Her nightmares resume, but now they aren't the constant nightmares of her family's fatal accident. She sees things flying through the air; she sees a man without a face. Worst of all, she sees a locked room, and if she could just open that locked room and look at what it holds, which in the dream she knows but does not show anyone but herself. she would know herself better.

As Mary almost sleepwalks through the new/old city where she spent much of her childhood, varying the day-sleep with a short taste of the youth she never really had, her husband is working to find out what REALLY happened, because he is certain from what he knows of Mary's father that he wouldn't have run off the road at a dangerous curve on a cliff above the Pacific because two youngsters were quarreling in the back seat.

In the last few chapters of the book, things snap together. Mary is herself again, and the mystery is cleared up. Mary is now acquitted. And if I said any more, it would be a serious spoiler. So read it yourself. I think I've read it about ten times now, and I think it's great.

I love the Monk series. This one seemed to have a few plot holes and Monk seemed to jump to conclusions early on as if the story was put together quickly. However, the story develops well later on. I enjoyed it and would listen to it again.

Slow it down

I listened at 90% speed, which slowed the story down to normal speech and made it easy to follow.

An all time low!

I was concerned when I listened to the sample and heard the narration. The other books in the series that I have listened to through Audible were narrated by Divina Porter. I think she could make the most ridiculous book sound like good to really good literature. Simon Jones narration of slaves of obsession makes the whole thing seem like a parody. If the book were any longer then five hours I would have sacrificed my credit to read the book rather than listen to it. But since it is so short I guess I can stand to listen to it for a little while longer. I imagine Simon Jones could do a good narration but he certainly hasn't done it with this book! And because it is narration it makes the story even less believable. Maybe that's why Divina Porter chose not to be the narrator for this book. Anyway I Think it is awful though I am on the number 12 because I've become obsessed about finishing the monk series. Question about every detail questions about capital find a trace America

Starting to get a little stale... like a day-old pastry?

I've enjoyed Frank Tallis's Liebermann series immensely -- the historical setting is unbeatable, the characters engaging, and the set-ups quite intriguing. Alas, this one seems to have been phoned in (though no doubt on a lovely vintage telephone). There is not much character development (the relationship between Liebermann and Miss Lydgate, for example, seems practically frozen), the murders at the heart of the story aren't all that mysterious, there is much less of the broader social, cultural, and political context that Tallis usually provides as framework for the novels, and the scenes between Liebermann and Rheinhardt are positively predictable at this point (the musical interludes, the obligatory savoring of pastries, etc.).

There are nods to Vienna's avant-garde arts scene in the form of a painter whose controversial work appears to be modeled on Egon Schiele's and a dress designer influenced by the Secessionists, both of which are moderately interesting. But they also suggest that perhaps Tallis would find more fertile ground in setting a novel more squarely in the Viennese art world of the time, featuring the actual artists and models/muses of the period as he has previously done with other Viennese historical figures.

All-in-all, the lightest and quickest read of Tallis's series -- pleasant enough if you're already a fan, but not ultimately very substantial.

Don't buy a duplicate!!!

The Max Liebermann series is very enjoyable, but I have purchased two duplicates, before I researched and found that several books were published under two titles -- I gather the UK titles are (sometimes?) different than the US titles.

This is the third in the series involving 1855 Canada. Detective William Murdoch becomes involved with the apparent suicide of Constable Oliver Wicken, a man who was

Eakin family, whose house adjoins the one where Wicken died, is more involved with the case than they admit. We read about a tooth extraction (done with the newly in use laughing gas). We read of the

prejudice toward the few Chinese immigrants, a prejudice which makes Chinese witnesses, such as a laundry owner, unwilling to come forward, and the treatment of mentally ill women, which leads to the disbelief in a woman regarding what she knew and saw. This is a great addition to the series introducing us to a possible romantic interest for Detective Murdoch but with some complications, and the continued presence of the other lovable characters already introduced, such as the family he lives with and rents from.

With a good editor, this would have been 5 stars!

The germ of the story is good, but it would be MUCH better if there had been an editor with a sharp pencil. Lots of detail to be sifted. Many story threads, some with no relevance to the plot and others cut off with no satisfactory resolution. The overall tone is dark, and the dialogue often unduly coarse and vulgar. Thank goodness the creators of Murdoch Mysteries lifted this out of the swill and focused on story rather than atmosphere. I was hoping for some spin on that favorite, but this isn't it.

Another good Murdoch read

Although entirely different in flavor from the Canadian TV series which I

adore, I find this Murdoch equally enjoyable though more a 'standard' mystery experience. The characters are well drawn and the mystery involving. Narration is done well.

Entertaining

I'm enjoying this entertaining series. Jennings has mastered the right balance of plot, character and setting. The narrator is pleasant and easy to listen to. Thoroughly recommend this book and author for fans of period crime mysteries.

Strange and Ambitious

The Bookman, like many other "steampunk" novels, draws it's inspiration from the work of Jules Verne, H. G. Wells and other Victorian-era authors. There's a dash of Edgar Rice Burroughs in this novel as well and Lavie Tidhar references real historical figures (Verne himself makes an appearance), machines, etc. He's thrown all of these influences and inspirations in a literary blender and come up with a novel I found simultaneously original and inevitably derivative. At times it works swimmingly. Tidhar writes with flair and the story moves at a rapid pace. However, I could never quite connect with the book's protagonist, Orphan and the book incorporates so many disparate-but-familiar elements that I'm afraid it all felt a little too contrived in the end. Nevertheless, it's an entertaining and valiant effort, a love letter to some of the works I most enjoyed reading when I was growing up, and the audiobook is well read by narrator Jonathan Keeble.

I rated it 3 stars but I'd give it 3.5 if that was an option.

Fantastic Adventure

The story was engaging, a perfect boys adventure story. The narration was simply brilliant! I will look for this narrator again

Narration is annoying....

I read the 2nd book in the Bookman Histories, Camera Obscura, last year and really enjoyed it. I was excited to go back and read the book that started it all. Unfortunately this book was just okay for me; I had trouble engaging with the characters and the story just seemed to drag on and on.

I listened to this on audiobook which I do not recommend. The narrator distinguished between voices of different characters well, but his choices for voices were often shrill and obnoxious. There were character voices in the book that made me flinch with their shrillness. Definitely dont listen to this on audiobook.

This book tells the story of Orphen. He is a poet who wants nothing more than to live our his life with his beloved Lucy. When Lucy is murdered by the terrorist The Bookman, Orphen goes on a quest of revenge. He will either get Lucy back, kill the Bookman, or die trying. Unfortunately for Orphen he becomes deeply embroiled in a plot full of alien lizard races and automatons.

As with Camera Obscura, I enjoyed the wonderfully creative world here. The British Empire is run by a lizard race, automatons are struggling for their rights, and the Bookman seems to have eyes and agents everywhere.

I will be listening to Dorchester Terrace again. I usually take my time and savor Anne Perry's books, whether I am reading or listening. I couldn't unplug on this one.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Dorchester Terrace?

When Thomas Pitt used force to achieve justice. An entirely new dimension for his character.

Which scene was your favorite?

I must listen to it again to pick a favorite. The performance of the book was excellent, from the maid rescuing the dog to Charlotte stealing the show at Kensington Palace.

Any additional comments?

I keep thinking that after so many books centered on Charlotte and Thomas Pitt that the plots will get stale or predictable. Not the case, at all. Fascinating. Thank you Anne Perry!

Special Branch stories finally measure up.

I've been an Anne Perry fan since The Cater Street Hangman, the very first Pitt and Charlotte book, and I read each book as it came out. When she took Pitt out of the police and into Special Branch, the plots seemed to be labored and not very believable. They did improve gradually, and with Dorchester Terrace Perry has finally gotten Special Branch up to her previous standards for believable and interesting plots. As usual, her characters are well-drawn and thoroughly fleshed out.

Gerard Doyle's performance is excellent, and this book was entirely enjoyable.

The book starts off a little slow, but soon the reader is drawn into a captivating story of the life of Amelia Earhart, the circumstances of her last flight and attempted rescue. All of this seen through the eyes of the cynical detective, Nate Heller. There's something to the story, a cohesiveness and forlorn quality that hasn't been seen in the Heller Series since the first few books. Perhaps it's the increased volume of myths and rumors about Amelia's disappearance with which Collins can base his story, but there's an added depth to this story, and even to Heller himself. On the surface there's the same sardonic wit and wry humor the detective is known for, but in the second half of the book there's also a level of maturity the reader hasn't seen from Heller before. Overall this has to be one of my favorites in the series.

NOT MY MOST FAVORITE IN THE SERIES

I love the Nathan Heller series but the stories are only as good as the popularity of the actual person he's working for. Author Collins always captures the feel of the era in which he writes, seamlessly weaving true historical people events around the fictional Heller. As for this one, I have ever been interested in or impressed by Amelia Earhart. I feel she made reckless moves in her aviation career. Just because you can fly a plane doesn't mean you have the experience and resources to take a raggedy plane around the world. If you like Earhart, you'll like this interesting take on her disappearance. Nathan is still skirt chasing in his usual charming way.

not so good

In my view there are only two redeeming things in this book.

One is the phrase " Exasperation makes the other man give up."

Secondly, I thought it was a very first person book. I wanted to know more about what happened to his parents and more about the girl as she died. Then I remembered that, that was how it was . Your loved ones were gone in the twinkleing of an eye and nothing else was heard of them. I, however, had to imagne this for myself with no help from the author.

But that is all. The rest was boring to me.
