When Captain Chris Baldry, a World War I soldier, is sent home with a severe case of shellshock amnesia, he is a stranger to his wife, Kitty, and his adoring cousin, Jenny. Recoiling from the horrors of war and disillusioned with years of superficial married life, his mind has regressed 15 years into the past, where his heart may take refuge once again in the magic circle of his youth and of his first love, Margaret Allington.
In this lyrical and poignant story of a wounded man and the three concerned women who seek to heal him, Rebecca West explores the complexity of the mind and its subtle strategies for coping with life's painful realities. Only when Chris has the courage to face one pivotal moment of truth in his married life will he be able to awaken from his boyish fantasy and become, indeed, "every inch a soldier".

  • Emma Audiobook by Jane Austen
Listen to this audiobook free with a 30-day trial. Go to http://hotaudiobook.com/free
    Title: Emma
    Author: Jane Austen
    Narrator: Wanda McCaddon
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 14 hrs and 47 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-12-08
    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 80 votes
    Genres: Classics, British Literature
    Publisher's Summary:
Her well-meant interfering centers on the aloof Jane Fairfax, the dangerously attractive Frank Churchill, the foolish if appealing Harriet Smith, and the ambitious young vicar Mr. Elton - and ends with her complacency shattered, her mind awakened to some of life's more intractable dilemmas, and her happiness assured.
Austen's comic imagination was so deft and beautifully fluent that she could use it to probe the deepest human ironies while setting before us a dazzling gallery of characters - some pretentious or ridiculous, some admirable and moving, all utterly true.
    Editorial Reviews:
Emma Wodehouse, while eschewing marriage for herself, has no compunctions about making matches for others. No one creates silly English characters better than Austen, and Wanda McCaddon is up to the challenge of presenting them in all their inanity, especially as she reads dialogue. She's equally adept at portraying the multitude of characters that people the village of Highbury - whether male or female; upper, middle, or lower class; likable or unlikable. The plot itself might sag a bit in the middle, but it rights itself by the end with several satisfying chapters that resolve all the romantic couplings, including Emma's own. As Emma grows into a more thoughtful young woman, McCaddon's narration reflects her maturation.

  • The Sword in the Stone Audiobook by T. H. White

Title: The Sword in the Stone
    Author: T. H. White
    Narrator: Neville Jason
    Format: Abridged
Length: 3 hrs and 40 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-01-08
    Publisher: Naxos AudioBooks
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 13 votes
    Genres: Classics, British Literature
    Publisher's Summary:
The Sword in the Stone is the first novel in The Once and Future King, T. H. White's epic fantasy re-telling of the Arthurian legend. A cartoon adaptation by Walt Disney made it into an enduring favourite for the young.
    Editorial Reviews:
Wizards, boys, quests, and mixed-up magic. Sound familiar? Listeners can immerse themselves in the early years of King Arthur, known as a boy as the "Wart." Neville Jason easily takes the challenge of White's 1930s' language combined with myriad archaic terms of heraldry and chivalry. He delivers with fluidity and enthusiasm, rarely letting the listener wander off like King Pellinore, before another joust commences. The characters - blustery knights, compassionate mentors, or the sleepy hedgehog - are each imaginatively portrayed. The sly, merry humor is fully intact. Naxos's signature music heralds breaks between stories in this abridged Junior Classics edition. Hark! Well done.
    Critic Reviews:
    "[A] lively retelling." (The Guardian)
"Jason's narration reveals that he understands White's sense of humor. He plays up the comedy particularly well in the dialogue: he is remarkably adept at giving individual voices to each character." (AudioFile)

  • Wuthering Heights Audiobook by Emily Brontë

    Title: Wuthering Heights
    Author: Emily Brontë
    Narrator: Anne Flosnik
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 12 hrs and 19 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-28-08
    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 198 votes
    Genres: Classics, British Literature
    Publisher's Summary:
In this gripping chronicle of the never-ending conflict between the heart and the mind - and the pain and passion of true romance - Emily Brontë created an unforgettable classic saga of love, desperation, vengeance, and forgiveness. Published just one year before Brontë's death in 1848 at the age of 30, Wuthering Heights endures as one of the world's greatest love stories and a classic of English literature.
    Editorial Reviews:
Emily Brontë's sorrowful story of doomed romance between two childhood friends finds its voice in Anne Flosnik's narration. The diverse range of characters in this classic could present a difficult challenge for a sole narrator, but Flosnik conquers it with alacrity and enthusiasm. She masterfully alters her voice for each character and maintains keen attention to the varied British accents. Without being overly dramatic, Flosnik inserts passion into the dialogue and vividly conveys Brontë's imagery. She captures the cruel infatuation of Heathcliff and the dramatic ranting of his beloved Catherine. Alternately, she delivers the humble narration of maidservant Nellie in kind, measured tones. Flosnik interweaves passionate lamentation with articulate narration.
    Critic Reviews:
"It is as if Emily Brontë could tear up all that we know human beings by, and fill these unrecognizable transparencies with such a gust of life that they transcend reality." (Virginia Woolf)

  • Kept in the Dark Audiobook by Anthony Trollope
Listen to this audiobook free with a 30-day trial. Go to http://hotaudiobook.com/free
    Title: Kept in the Dark
    Author: Anthony Trollope
    Narrator: Jill Masters
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 40 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-10-08
    Publisher: Jimcin Recordings
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 69 votes
    Genres: Classics, British Literature
    Publisher's Summary:
Completed only a few months before his death, Kept in the Dark is one of Trollope's most captivating novels. Yet unlike Trollope's other major novels - the Palliser series, The Claverings, the Barsetshire novels - Kept in the Dark succeeds without the use of considerable length or legions of characters that many thought were essential to his fictional world.
Kept in the Dark is a probing psychological portrait of the near destruction of a marriage - a novel that combines keen insights with vigorous emotional strength. Jealousy, guilt, excessive pride, and compulsion all sweep across its surface: in George Western, the self-willed and fatally-proud husband, who would rather destroy his own happiness than admit to any moral strain in his character; in Cecilia Western, whose peculiar mixture of pride and submissiveness forces her inexorably toward deceit; in the grinding hypocrisy of Cecilia's friend, Miss Altifiorla; in the overwhelming egotism of the rejected suitor, Sir Francis Geraldine. Trollope gives us a distinctive portrait of the Victorian world.
This excellent reading was originally recorded in 1986 in the days of reel-to-reel tape. Although the sound is not quite up to todays digital standards, every effort has been made to enhance the recording. However, you may hear a slight "echo effect" in some places. This should not interfere significantly with your enjoyment of the story but, just to be sure, you may want to listen to a sample before purchasing.
    Editorial Reviews:
With Charles Dickens and Lord Tennyson, Anthony Trollope was one of the great chroniclers of English society during the Victorian era. In one of his final books, Kept in the Dark, Trollope turns his acute, comic, and sympathetic eye on Cecilia Holt, whose "period of absolute, unmistaken, unreasonable love lasted but for six weeks after her engagement" to Sir Francis Geraldine. In a refined, confessional performance by Jill Masters, Kept in the Dark follows Cecilias romantic disillusionment into marriage, social immersion, reconciliation, and hypocrisy. This audiobook is a firsthand glimpse into Victorian values, ideas, and obsessions.

    (P)1979 Jimcin Recordings
    Editorial Reviews:
Few stories have held such a grip on the public consciousness as H. G. Wells The Time Machine. And yet Wells original 1895 novel remains an unread treat for most fans of science fiction.
At a dinner party, an unnamed English scientist reveals that hes created a machine that allows him to travel the "fourth dimension". The "Time Traveler" (as hes called) relates a story about his travels to the year AD 802,701 where he meets two races: the passive Eloi and the aggressive Morlocks. When the Time Traveler discovers his time machine stolen, he must steal it back from the Morlocks.
Walter Zimmerman and Jim Roberts offer measured performances, their voices rising as the tension spikes in this spell-binding feat of imagination.
