    Title: Moo

Length: 16 hrs and 16 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-29-06

    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
Jane Smiley, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of A Thousand Acres, instantly captured the admiration and laughter of readers everywhere when Moo was originally published. A New York Times best seller, it is a hilarious tour through the inner sanctums of a Midwestern university.
    Critic Reviews:
"Delectably entertaining....An uproariously funny and at the same time hauntingly melancholy portrait of a college community in the Midwest." (The New York Times)
"Fast, hilarious, and heartbreaking....Not for a minute does Moo lose its perfect satiric pitch or pacing." (People)
"Stuffed with memorable characters, sparkling with deliciously acid humor, Moo is a rare bird in today's literary menagerie: a great read that also makes you think." (Chicago Sun-Times)
    Members Reviews:
    Totally hilarious and too true
This is such a dead-on accurate satire of what goes on at a university. Thank God it's a comedy because it would just be too painful otherwise. Companies have competing departments but universities have competing classes of stakeholders: the administration, the faculty, the athletics group and their boosters, the maintenace staff, the alumni, and the students, and probably a couple others I've left out. Each group has their own agenda and Smiley portrays each one perfectly. Most books about college seem to focus on the students but Smiley correctly captures the fact that students are merely transitory citizens in the life of a university. Multiple intersecting storylines, quotable passages on every "page" and entertaining characters abound. Smiley's prose never flags through it all. She is an extraordinary talent.
    couldn't finish it
I got this because, as an art instructor who went to college in Iowa, I thought I could relate.
    I couldn't.
It had a zillion characters (which I usually like) but they all became to stupid to care about.
I didn't finish it. 'nuf said.
    Too Many Characters
A Google search led me to a list: "books you'd like if you liked Straight Man by Richard Russo", which is how I found Moo. I loved Straight Man but disagree that Moo deserves to be on the same level. It's a messy tangled web of too many characters at a midwestern university whose trials and tribulations are not all that interesting. Still managed to listen to the whole thing -- a credit to the narrator.
    MOO
I just could not get into this book. After 2 CDs I gave up.
    Moo
What could be less exciting than a novel set in an agricultural university? At first glance, Jane Smiley's novel, with its bovine title, seems to offer little to arrest the potential reader. Fortunately, from chapter 1, the reader is captivated, and a diverse and interesting cast of characters passes across the stage, intersecting, sometimes clashing, sometimes loving, and participating in the petty and large scale politics so typical of academe. Although it's a long listen, the strongly differentiated characters, and the excellent reading, carry the listener on with great involvement. And I found it to be an excellent travel companion on a flight to Australia.

    mixed emotions
I found this book to be very moving and thought provoking. The author has a talent for conveying the story in plain English. Easy listening.
    Simple yet impactful
Its a simple story with a strong message across. Anyone reading it would be touched by the emotions of the story. I loved it!
    Wonderful
Another moving and heart warming story from a master storyteller. I loved it and listened to it in one sitting.
    Heartbreaking and beautiful
Having two kids younger than school age has made me much soppier, but I cried repeatedly listening to this, something I haven't done with a book in years. Not an easy listen to anyone with regrets of any kind regarding their past behaviour, but all the more essential because of that. The best audiobook in my collection so far.

    Title: The Highest Tide

    Author: Jim Lynch
    Narrator: Fisher Stevens

Length: 7 hrs and 5 mins
    Language: English

    Publisher: Macmillan Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 193 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
One moonlit night, 13-year-old Miles O'Malley slips out of his house, packs up his kayak, and goes exploring on the flats of Puget Sound. But what begins as an ordinary hunt for starfish, snails, and clams is soon transformed by an astonishing sight: a beached giant squid. As the first person to ever see a giant squid alive, the speed-reading, Rachel Carson-obsessed insomniac instantly becomes a local curiosity. When he later finds a rare deepwater fish in the tidal waters near his home, and saves a dog from drowning, he is hailed as a prophet. The media hovers and everyone wants to hear what Miles has to say.
But Miles is really just a teenager on the verge of growing up, infatuated with the girl next door, worried that his bickering parents will divorce, and fearful that everything, even the bay he loves, is shifting from him. While the sea continues to offer up discoveries from its mysterious depths, Miles struggles to deal with the difficulties that attend the equally mysterious process of growing up. In this unforgettable, beguiling novel, we witness the dramatic sea change for both Miles and the coastline that he adores over the course of a summer, one that will culminate with the highest tide in 50 years.
    Critic Reviews:
"Tender and authentic....This moving, unusual take on the summers of childhood conveys a contagious sense of wonder at the variety and mystery of the natural world." (Publishers Weekly)
"Readers, particularly those who enjoy discovering new voices in fiction, will appreciate Lynch's assertive, microscopically observant writing and respond to the precocious hero, a boy so attuned to the land that his coming-of-age exerts a tidal pull on the very molecules of his environment." (Booklist)
"A stunning light show....A celebratory song of the seas." (Kirkus Reviews)

    Loved it
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, particularly the discussions about the wonders of nature. Judging from other reviews, I may be unusual in this regard. (Okay, I majored in Marine Biology many years ago.) The reader did an excellent job capturing the artless enthusisasm that we as adults too often lose.
Like another reviewer, I was a bit disconcerted by the sudden ending, as if the writer just ran out of steam and quit. But all in all, I highly recommend this book, especially to people with an interest in sealife or biology in general.
    Unexpected surprise
I'm not sure why I bought this book but I was unexpectedly surprised that it was so enjoyable. Its has a interesting plot and lots of information on sea life which was also something that I found very interesting.
All and all, I'd reccommend this quiet book.
    13 going on 30
    Pros:
Coming-of-age books can be great and moving reads. This book was loaded with emotion, and chock full of beautiful descriptions of life on the ocean (or bay, as it were) by one who obviously loves it and is well versed in the subject.
    Cons:
There is plenty of what I'd expect a young teen to be thinking of and doing in this novel. But, about one-third the way into the book, I started to doubt a 13 year old could ever know as much as Miles O'Malley did. The story started to flatten for me as more and more very detailed facts about marine life, elegant quotes from Rachel Carson's writings, and very adult emotions came tumbling out of Miles.

    Poorly produced
I always like Joanna Trollope, and I'd listen to Eleanor Bron read the phone book aloud, so this looked like a sure thing. Alas, the production is so weak enough to take the edge off my enjoyment of this book. The sound is muffled and mushy, and too frequently I can hear extraneous background noises. It sounds as if Bron recorded the book at home, not in a studio. Very distracting, and not to the high standard I expect from Audible.
Also, Bron doesn't do children well. There's one child character, Imogen, a toddler, who is written as a spoiled, mouthy little brat. She should have been comic relief or possibly a foil to other characters, but Bron reads every line of hers in the same high-pitched whine. I wanted to reach into my mp3 player, grab the kid, and slap it silly.
The book is worth your time - a well written and engaging story - but be advised that the production flaws will take the edge off the experience. And that horrible little girl will make you wonder why the parents failed so miserably with her when their other children are three dimensional and believable.
    Loved every minute of it!
Eleanor Bron is such a delightful narrator- the story was a pleasure to listen to from beginning to end. It was rather like a warm shawl around you on a pleasant but slightly chilly British summer evening.
Not the slightest pause between scenes
When scenes change without the chapter changing too, there is absolutely no pause in the reading, so it takes time to realise the story has moved on. The characterisation of voices is good, however. I was not impressed with the 2 main characters - both act stupidly and a bit selfishly. Generally a rather depressing book - not one of her best.

    Publisher's Summary:
Johnny "Hollywood" Hogan owns the ballroom on Magnolia Street, where sisters Kate and Shirley Winters, along with other regulars, go every Saturday night to escape the realities of Belfast life, and to seek fun and romance.
Free-spirited Shirley has a mad crush on a boy named Declan Greenwood, while thoroughly modern Kate likes plenty of variety in her wardrobe (and her love life) and is determined to get married before her younger sister. She'll take anyone who'll have her, even if it has to be that greasy, though not entirely unattractive, mechanic who has been hanging around lately. The crowd at Hogan's is always lively, but that doesn't mean all problems have been left at the door. Johnny's grandparents are afraid that he'll retire and shut the ballroom down. Johnny yearns for Marion, his old love (and Declan's mother), while Marion starts to worry that her long-held secret will finally be revealed.
But it doesn't take long for all of the ballroom's patrons to discover that, even without velvet-lined balconies and crystal chandeliers, the magic of the twinkling lights and soft music will help them find just what they're looking for, whether it be family, friendship, or even true love.
    Critic Reviews:

    The Ballroom on Magnolia Street
I really enjoyed this book. I'm an avid Mauve Binchey fan and this story could have been one of hers. The characters are easy to relate to and the story is well woven. This was a good listen.
    What a Great Book!
What did you love best about The Ballroom on Magnolia Street?
    The characters and the plot.
What did you like best about this story?
Started slow but wound its way into my heart.
What does Caroline Winterson bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
    Very pleasant voice, but entertaining.
If you could take any character from The Ballroom on Magnolia Street out to dinner, who would it be and why?
The character who owned the ballroom.
    Any additional comments?
    Love this Author!
not as good as the teahouse but worth the listen
great narration, a good audiobook but not as good as the teahouse. funny, but i think her audiobooks are better the second time you listen to them. so, i guess worth it for the re-listen.
Could not /Would not finish it
Not nearly as good as this author's other 2 books, which I thoroughly enjoyed. So much back and forth that keeping up with the characters and what timeframe they belonged in was confusing.
    A nice little book
Maybe not Maeve Binchey, but a nice, pleasant little story to pass the time. I also listened to the Teahouse book, which was ok, but this one was better.

    Publisher's Summary:
Then Norm, Zack's freewheeling, Viagra-popping father, resurfaces after a 20-year absence looking to make amends. Norm's overbearing, often outrageous efforts to reestablish ties with his sons infuriate Zack, and yet, despite 20 years of bad blood, he finds something compelling in his father's maniacal determination to transform his own life. Inspired by Norm, Zack boldly attempts to make some changes of his own, and the results are instantly calamitous. Soon fists are flying, his love life is a shambles, and his once carefully structured existence is spinning hopelessly out of control.
Charged with intelligence and razor sharp wit, Everything Changes is at once hilarious, moving, sexy, and wise, a work of transcendent storytelling from an exciting new talent.
    Critic Reviews:
"Pithy observations on love, marriage, and corporate life give the book a graceful charm. Tropper continues to display a fine feel for romantic comedy in this enjoyable follow-up to The Book of Joe." (Publishers Weekly)
    Members Reviews:
    Good guy book
After I first started listening, I thought this was a guy-book (vs chick-book) because it had lots of references to guy noises and guy troubles. But I stayed with it and it turned out to be a good story so I would have to say I recommend it.
    It Ain't Your Average Family
    I loved this book.
Now for the bad part. While the protagonist's predicament moved me very much, there was a tendency on the part of the author to overwrite the melodrama. At times I wanted to scream, "Dude, enough is enough!" This is a dysfunctional family of major proportions and the reader can't help but feel Zack has contributed mightily to the tragic aura surrounding him.
Scott Brick, who I normally love as narrator, contributed to the high pitch insanity with his over-the-top vocal gymnastics. Still, this reader realizes the lump in my throat is warranted and Everything Changes firmly plants me in a world created by a gifted author.
    My new favorite author
After 2 Tropper books in 2 months, I'm ready for him to write some more stories! I love this book about essentially a "quarter-life crisis" and a man who can't seem to stop screwing things up once he gets started. I think we've all felt this way at some point or another and this book had me calling my mom and saying how I wasn't so messed up after all - compared to Zach, anyway. This book had me laughing out loud as I drove down the interstate and wishing I could stay in my car instead of going in to work. Easy listening and perfect for someone like me with a sarcastic streak the size of Texas.
    Yes It Does
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes I would I really enjoyed this story from top to bottom.
What other book might you compare Everything Changes to and why?
One Hit Wonder both Story's are about a man finding this way through this sometimes shit storm called life.
What does Scott Brick bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Scott Brick is one of the best. It's like when jack nicholson played joker then heath ledger played joker after you saw Heath's performance you where like Jack who?
If you could rename Everything Changes, what would you call it?
    Shit Happens
    Any additional comments?
Good Book get it now, right NOW!

Invited to lecture in America, von Igelfeld envisions a visit to California or New York. Instead, he finds himself at the University of Arkansas. Still, in von Igelfeld's view, one American state is very like another. An expert philologist, von Igelfeld prepares to deliver a talk on verbs, until he makes a grim discovery: he has been mistaken for a German master of veterinary science who has recently passed away. One man at the reception is quick to point this out. But von Igelfeld explains that since Germans are so efficient, they sometimes publish obituaries before a person's demise. Before long, he takes the podium and faces an attentive crowd expecting to hear some fine points on the nature of sausage dogs.
    Members Reviews:
    So disappointing.
    Any additional comments?
Sorry...an unbelievable turn of events in the storyline had me quickly stopping the CD. And I did not continue to listen. If you've heard or read this, you know the part to which I refer. Perhaps the author redeemed himself by later making this event part of a dream sequence, but I don't really care. If you care for dogs, you will not want to read this book. Rather surprising from a somewhat gentle soul of an author.
    Wit Supreme
I laughed all the way through this short book--more, possibly, than any other of McCall Smith's that I have read. Half of what makes it so delightful is the narration--which perfectly presents the dry German intellectuals in all their dry intellectual solemnity. The other half is, of course, the author's wit. Professor Doctor Moritz-Maria von Igelfeld is so utterly self-satisfied, and yet at the same time quite likeable, that the reader finds she can view him as an old, though ridiculous, friend. I would give this 5-stars, but felt the earlier stories were more successful than the last 2 or 3, which turned overly ridiculous in my view, though still very enjoyable.
    Enjoyable Story
Interesting interactions amoung the self-absorbed academics involved. Felt sorry for the sausage dog, but at least it triumphs in the end.
    I couldn't finish the book...
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
No. I loved all the Number 1 Ladies Detective Agency books and I love animals. I concluded that Alexander McCall Smith would brighten my day with this book. I could not bring myself to finish it. The cruel treatment of the dog, removing it's legs, was beyond my sensibilities. He lost me during surgery and I will warn anyone else who wants to read it.
What do you think your next listen will be?
Merl's Door by Ted Kerasote. I was not disappointed. I learned a lot, and enjoyed the story.
What three words best describe Paul Hechts voice?
    Accent was appropriate.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
    No
    Any additional comments?
Maybe Paul Hecht deserves better than a 3, but I was thoroughly disgusted with the book, and everything about it.
    Very funny, very clever!
Brilliantly read, terribly clever, far better than #1 Ladies Detective Agency (which got very high reviews but I found dry, unfunny, and slow). This is especially funny if you know any German or know about German culture. The whole thing is very tongue-in-cheek, about linguists and their world in which the Portuguese Irregular Verb is the most important thing in existence, and the struggles for position that lead to ridiculous scenarios. Very funny!

Award-winning novelist Hari Kunzru was hailed as a "modern-day Kipling," for his bestselling debut, The Impressionist. With this exuberant follow-up, Kunzru takes an ultracontemporary turn in a stylish, playful, and wicked exploration of life at the click of a mouse.
    Critic Reviews:
"Delectable...Mr. Kunzru writes with wry certitude and cinematic precision." (The New York Times)
"A sprawling, ambitious, shape-shifting novel...Kunzru proves himself a clever, sharply observant writer...much more than a brilliant satirist." (The Washington Post)

    Thoroughly Enjoyable
Presents a realistic look at the hurdles faced by technical folks trying to immigrate to the US while at the same time telling a hilarious insider story of high-tech America. The related story of the marketing people affected by the virus lets us in on the buzzword filled conversations of marketing "wizards" in which nothing is ever said that makes sense. I recommend this book to anyone who likes computer or Internet related stories.
    A Great Read
I decided I should start adding my two cents worth since I've been snookered by some overly glowing reviews and also assisted by some great reviews. I'd add Transmission to the great list. It was thouroughly enjoyable, especially because I work in the technology sector and with Indian developers. The story line is engaging, entertaining, and at times educational. The author's reading was excellent. There were a few plot loose ends, but I still heartily recommend it. A modern fable of technology, outsourcing, and love.
    First time reviewer!
Transmission is the kind of book that reminds you why you read contemporary fiction instead of retreating to the safety of the classics. Kunzru's story is a total page-turner, but one elevated to the level of a modern fable by his amazing observations, beautiful language, and memorable characters. Digital life as filtered through the fine and ironic sensibility of a master. I hoarded the last hour, hardly wanting it to end. And Kunzru is an amazing reader, alternately Indian, English, Australian, American.....
    A complete entertaining experience
Mr. Kunzuru kept me smiling through the book. A satirical touch to technology driven immigrants, the Indian film industry, unsuccessful jargon pouting marketing geeks, venture capitalist, golf playing Arabs and the various manifestation of women in everyones lives. Thankfully, there is also a plot with many sub plots, which are quite interesting and amusing but the superb characterization and the narration is the winner. I could relate to all the characters in this book.
Only negative part about Mr. Kunzrus book is the prolonged description of places and events.
