Tough Choices in a Tough Town

Prudence isn't really about Prudence, a poor Native American girl who finds herself alone in a small town in the northern woods of Minnesota, shuttling between the reservation and a town in which the natives provide labor for wealthy summer visitors. It's about the ways that lonely people can damage each other. It's about Frankie and Billy, friends who grow up and separately go off to Europe to fight in World War II, longing for each other. It's about Felix, the handyman who had fought bravely in World War I and who now watches sadly, fulfilling his own responsibilities but unable to help the others around him. It's about teenage bravado, as Frankie and his friends prepare for war, and it's about lust and loyalty and courage. The novel is filled with intriguing characters, well-rounded and believable if often self-deceiving.

The novel is also about the indirect damage caused by war. Much of the plot turns on a misguided effort to track down a German soldier who escaped from a nearby prisoner of war camp.

The novel shifts viewpoints among the characters in different chapters. This is a successful strategy, creating a mosaic of the town and the reservation. There are some false notes toward the end, in particular a scene with a visitor from Germany seeking revenge on another former German prisoner of war. But overall, the novel was beautifully told, thoughtful and serious.

Chris Patton was a strong narrator, his voice filled with boyish wonder and enthusiasm, as if he were another of Frankie's college friends visiting Frankie's family's resort on vacation. Overall, this was a well-written book and a very enjoyable read.

Great Story!

I loved these characters- for all of their flaws! They are very much a product of their time and culture, and how they choose to escape their destinies reflects the limitations of their world.

What is the subject?

Bought this book due to high review by local MPR Station. They said it was about WWII German POW Camp in MN.

I loved the character development and Robin Miles as the narrator was perfect.

Well done

Again, well-written with much detail. Sometimes too much or weirdly timed, but still good. It was easy to get worked up regarding what was happening to the US, maybe because I'm a veteran? The performance was much better, much easier to listen to.

Great WW-II Naval Fiction

I must respectfully disagree with the previous reviewer of this book. I am retired USN so I have some familiarity with the subject matter which may have helped my understanding. The narrator uses the Queen's English for the general narration. He also uses Cockney for Cockney crew-members, northern English for northern English crew members, Welsh accented English for the Welsh, etc.

I do believe that this is a book that you must listen to closely to stay in the picture since there is a fair amount of complexity to the subject matter and the main characters' thoughts and speech. The action is sharp and startling, as I believe was that kind of naval warfare, conducted mostly at night before the arrival of radar. All of the technical/historical material rings completely true to me.

This is my first listen to Reeman. I have listened to every Patrick O'Brian and Frederich Marryat novel that I can find in audio format, and I would love to see more of Reeman's writing on Audible.

Dismal, Dreary, Dull, Depressing...

...and if that weren't enough, it's confusing and disjointed. On top of that, you have to put up with the cockney accent of the narrator, which makes the whole experience something less than pleasing. You can skip this, without feeling at all as if you've missed something

good, but over priced.

This book is something that people who are interested in Malta, and its servival during the second world war should read.

It has good characters in, and if the end is a tad obvious, it is never the less yet another good book by Reeman. Audible should have more of them.

The best author of sea novels

I love Douglas Reeman books as well as his pseudonynm Alexander Kent. If you like sea novels about the sea then you probably already know about Reeman. Under the name Reeman it is mostly about WWII whereas Kent is about Richard Bolitho's war with the French in the 1700-1800s. They are all great and I would very much recommend them

Glorious Action

I have read many of Douglas Reeman's books and have always enjoyed them, this is the first time I had listened to one. David Rintoul is ann excellent Narrator and I enjoyed his charcterisations, the story line is good but perhaps not one of his best nevertheless very enjoyable its a pity Audible dont carry more of them.

Book Even Better than Oscar-Winning Movie

This autobiographical novel operates on several levels: a holocaust memoir a thrilling adventure, and a family drama.

Driven from Nazi Germany to Kenya, the family must adjust, with varying levels of success, to life in a completely foreign land. They were glad to be safe from the Nazis, but now had to contend with the racism and anti-semitism of their host nation, and the English colonizers, and also the guilt and worry of what was happening in Europe.

Family dynamics, and the horror and confusion of displacement, are at the heart of this audiobook. The father's haunting guilt, the mother's resistance to change, daughter Regina's embrace of her new land. Africa, from the viewpoint of Regina, seems almost magical and full of possibility, but also completely destabilizing.

Narrator, Max Roll has a wide variety of accents and personalities to contend with, and he does a superb job of making each voice distinct and alive. He brings pathos to the reading that adds tremendously to the story.

I loved this book!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I've been concentrating on listening to WW II books as I wanted to learn more about that time in history, especially how the Nazis treated people in the various countries like France, the Netherlands, Scandinavia etc. I had not read any books that dealt with German Jews fleeing Germany into Africa, so this was new for me. The history of Jews living and trying to leave Germany and the hardships and atrocities they encounter are pretty well documented in other books, and this one does spend some time on that process, but once the family arrives in Africa, wow!

Ms. Zweig does a fantastic job writing about the lives and hardships of those who have had to leave their country, but she does an amazing job of writing about the relationships that develop between the fleeing Jews and the local tribes people of Kenya.The descriptions remind me a bit of "the Power of One", written by Bryce Courtenay, who was born in Africa and had to leave his country because of apartheid problems there. He met and married an Australian woman and lived and wrote in Australia until his death recently.

Anyway, Ms. Zweig has caught the rhythm, melody and unique way of thinking of the local people.

This was a fine read in many respects. It allowed one to be captured in the spirit of the times while also giving reflections on ones own life and where we sit in nature and relationships. This book as well as the book leading up to this one is a great listen (read) and will this author will do well to continue with this genre/theme.

Mostly Boring....

I am disappointed to say that this audiobook is just not all it seems. The synopsis both on Audible.com and Amazon.com led me to believe that this book would have a lot more vitality, a lot more character. I was interested in hearing about this "mistress of nothing" - I was expecting a more personal look at the emotions of a serving woman who really is "mistress of nothing" and expected that to be a theme of the book.

I'm about 3 hours in, and it's incredibly slow and boring. I don't feel like we "know" the narrator - we follow her from menial task to menial task, but we don't get too far into her psyche, which is disappointing for me. The pace of the book is slow - lots of repetitive portions and just generally dull. I found myself just not caring about what happens next.

I would not recommend this book. With a length of only 8 hours, I am skeptical that the type of character development I like to see will be achieved in the remainder of the book. I doubt I will finish this audiobook. I'd use my credits elsewhere if I had a do-over.

Wonderfully engaging story

Outstanding naration brought the story to life. Cold England to hot Egypt culture. Highly recommended.
