A Great Read!

Would you listen to The Other Alexander again? Why?

I really enjoyed this book; the story, the characters and Levkoff's writing style. Alexander is a very interesting character with a wonderfully dry wit. It is a creative and entertaining piece of work and Andrew Randall is the perfect narrator for this book. So much so that his voice was with me when I read the second book, which unfortunately was not in audio.

Tried to Return

Hated this book & got both Kindle and Audible...Went to Kindle to try to return but there wasn't a place to do it. I guess sitting in my Library for 10 days was too long. I couldn't finish the book but to give it a benefit of a doubt others may like it. I really thought I would like it because I love history & historical fiction. I just can't put my finger on why I hated it.

Books And Sex

Imagine yourself as an extremely gifted, intellectual girl of seventeen from an extremely intellectual family with an equally precocious sister coming of age in England during the time of Elizabeth II's coronation just past the age of Austerity (As opposed to America's Post-War Economic boom, England went through a period of scarcity so severe that there was food-rationing, more severe than during the actual war.), and you will have a good idea of the milieu in which A.S. Byatt and her sister, Margaret Drabble (as well-known a writer as her sister, in England) grew up. You will also be able to put yourself in either the character Frederica's or in her sister, Stephanie's, shoes. The one you fancy most will depend on your taste, I suppose. All the other reviewers seem to favour Frederica, and, in fairness, the book does become, especially towards the end, her story. Still, I prefer Stephanie's quiet, Wordsworthian depth and empathy to Frederica's stylised Racine-like hardness (A bit of a Manichean simplification here, but I think it will do for the prospective reader. I'm not writing a dissertation.) In any event the choice, I think, is a personal one.

I notice that there is much comparing of Byatt to Jane Austen here. I should be especially wary of this comparison if I were a prospective reader, for a couple of reasons: 1) There is much explicit sex here, so much that, had this book been up for publication in the year it was set, it would have been unanimously turned down because of the Obscenity Laws. D.H. Lawrence (mentioned often herein) is the apt comparison 2.) I just don't see it, aside from Byatt's obsession with detail, but this detail extends to the sexual realm as well.

Great subject, nice book

Ordered this book when I saw the author-poet's interview on television.

This is a work of historical fiction around Vasco Da Gama's voyage to "discover" India - a word that sounds very funny to the sea-faring Arabs (like the legendary Ibn Majid) and Indians who have been on those seas for centuries. The pilot on Gama's boat is one of the central characters and we get to know about Cairo (Al Qahira) under its Mamluk rule during his childhood and youth. There is also the muhtasib (the keeper of morals) of Cairo and an artist among his group of friends. Then there are the Portuguese ranging from the navigators to the Christian friar. The Indian society around Kerala with Samudriraja (the Zamorin) and the Hindu and Muslim subjects also plays its part along with the visiting monk from Sri Lanka.

The book is a window into the world of Islam at the time, the arrogance and self-confidence of the Christian Europeans out to "civilize" the world (with its shades of naivety and ruthless violence), and the complex Indian society with the depth and decadence of any ancient and complex civilization. All the undercurrents of the rather violent Portuguese entry into India is well brought out.

Good reading (though there are a few abrupt jumps and a bit of attitude in the writing). Very interesting subject.

Engaging Story

What made the experience of listening to The Life of Objects the most enjoyable?

I like Susanna Moore and make an effort to read each of her books as they are published. This one is my favorite of the past few years. Follows a 14 year old girl into Germany and the war, revealing events through the experiences of the household where she lives. A serious book but engaging story. I lost myself in this world.

Good but misleading title and description

If you are looking for another book with facts and details about Prince Edward and Wallis Simpson, you're not going to get them. This is a piece of fiction set during the time of the Abdication crisis. Wallis and Edward make some cameos, but it's hardly about them. It's a story about people know them peripherally and tells about the lives they are leading while all of the Edward/Wallis business is going on. "Abdication" si not a good title for this.

That said, it was an enjoyable genre piece.

A prequel / sequel

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I absolutely loved The Little Book, so when someone told me about The Lost Prince, I had to run right out to read/hear this book too. In the context of time travel, this book can be called either a prequel or sequel. I loved delving into Weezie's life and again found her contacts with historical figures such as Dr. Carl Jung intriguing. One aspect of the story having to do with the character of Will, was unexplained even at the end, and that was disappointing. I also would have liked to hear more about Eleanor and Frank's relationship. It was only referred to in passing as though he barely figured in her life, which was not very believable. But this book circles around time travel which is also not very believable and yet I love that.

All in all, for those who read The Little Book, you won't want to miss this. If you have not, The Lost prince would probably not hold your interest.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I loved the strength of the Eleanor Burton character.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

I found the narrator at times to employ a stilted type of speech pattern that grated on me. At first it seemed related to the characterization of Will, but it happened often and not only when relating his parts of the dialog. I almost wondered if her first language was not English because during the parts in which she used a European accent, her speech pattern flowed much better and was not irritating.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

If I told the moment that most moved me, I'd give away too much of the plot, so i won't.

Fascinating Story

Tracy Groot is an author who writes wonderful books. They are well written and researched. âFlame of Resistanceâ is her novel about the French Resistance during World War II. During the Occupation ordinary Frenchmen exhibited extraordinary courage. Shortages of virtually every staple of food, fuel, clothingâeverything was rationed or non-existent. Those who were courageous enough to put their lives on the line to help downed airmen or Jewish neighbors were constantly watchful and fearfully observant of their surroundings. Anyone at any time could voice their suspicions of their activities to the SS or Gestapo or Milice (French police).

The Resistance provided valuable information to the Allies about German troop movements and fortifications, especially nearing the invasion. People took awful risks to their lives and those of their families in order to provide help to the Allies. The inevitable turn of the tide for the Germans did not lessen their fierceness and cruelty when dealing with those who bested them. It was as though they needed to up their aggressiveness to prove that they were in the position of right.

I thought this book was a wonderful tribute to those who resisted. Along with them, we read about those Naziâs and Germans who do not condone the excessive torture and abuse heaped on persons suspected of crime against the occupation. The smallest grievance could result in death. I was excited to read that many of the locations and military fortifications were actually truly written about and that some of the characters were based on actual persons who were involved.

Well written, engaging story set in occupied France during WWII. The story line held my interest and it was nice to read something from an era that is just beginning to be explored by writers today. Would recommend"

I stuck with the book and the story was excellent. I do feel like I missed some of ...

It's hard to rate this book. I struggled with it at first, to even keep reading. I found the names of the characters SO confusing, that I had a hard time knowing who the author was talking about. There are 2 characters with the last name Rousseau. Sometimes one of them is referred to as Monsieur Rousseau. Sometimes they are referred to by their first names. And then to further complicate matters, many of the characters have spy names, on top of their real names. That said, I stuck with the book and the story was excellent.

I enjoyed the story... it was different from other Janette Oke stories because the heroine wasn't as likable as they normally are.

Marlowe and Shakespeare

Fascinating to listen to, as there are sections in verse. Beautifully read. The book is written by Kit and goes into his life as an agent for England, travelling round Europe. His drunken cynicism leads to trouble with those who assume that the characters in his plays portray his true ideas on religion. At a time when atheism carried a very nasty death sentence. So his death is faked, he travels but is brought back to England by homesickness, and goes to see his plays performed - the ones attributed to Shakespeare, a merchant from Stratford, who he thought he'd made up! He finds himself caught up in the Essex situation at the end of Elizabeth's reign. The atmosphere and relationships are very well portrayed, and I wanted to find out what eventually happened to him.

What made the experience of listening to Innocent in the Sheikh's Harem the most enjoyable?

I thought this was well read. I liked that Celia,the heroine, did not sound like a high school girl which seems to be the norm in historical romances in most cases unless they are described with a smokey or heavier voice. Julia Franklin had a good variety of voices for the characters and made it easy to listen and recognize each of the characters. Prince Ramiz had a very believable voice for his character's description.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Innocent in the Sheikh's Harem?

I thought a memorable moment was the first time she sees Ramiz from a distance when she and her husband arrive in port to begin their journey to see him at his palace. He is just as she pictured a Prince of the Desert from reading Arabian Nights. Simple scene but worked well. She behaved like someone ready to step forward and face her future no matter what it was to bring. The good along with the bad.

The love scene in the desert tent on the way to meet with the tribes. It is passionate and tender. Well written. You can almost feel the heat rise from the page as they come together even though they know a future together is almost unthinkable. They both have strong passion and it shows here.

Marguerite Kaye is a very good author. This whole series is good. A light and passionate romp in the desert for Celia and her sisters.

I loved this story and it pulled me in so I would recommend this to a friend.

What did you like best about this story?

I loved that both leads were strong people. This is something you don't always find in romance stories. Also they were flushed out and not just shells. You couldn't simply step into one of them but you could close your eyes and see it.

How could the performance have been better?

The voice of the narrator sounded old to me. That is not what I want to listen to when I am listening to a romance. I understand that it was a regency but even those I don't want them to sound old. I just sounds wrong to me.

If you could rename Innocent in the Sheikh's Harem, what would you call it?

I don't have a new name for it. I was always bad a naming stories, so I read the description and go from there. I don't put any stock in titles.

As an over all I liked the book. I would read this again and again. I would recommend this again and again. The story was good and you could see the journey of self.
