Author: Helena Blavatsky

Narrator: Mark Rice-Oxley

Format: Unabridged Audiobook

Length: 0 hours 40 minutes

Release date: January 1, 2023

Genres: LGBTQ+

Publisher's Summary:

Helena Petrovna Blavatsky, often known as Madame Blavatsky, was born on 12th August 1831 into an aristocratic family in present day Dnipro in Ukraine, then part of the Russian Empire. She was the younger sister of the writer Vera Zhelikhovsky.Much of Blavatsky's life story relies on her own memories which changed much during her lifetime and therefore parts of it are unreliable. What appears to be certain is that much of her life was lived first on family travels and postings and then on her journeys in an effort to further her own self-education and quest for knowledge. As a teenager she developed an interest in Western esotericism and from there she claimed many travels including a trip to India where she encountered a group of spiritual adepts, the 'Masters of the Ancient Wisdom', who sent her to Shigatse, Tibet, where they trained her to develop a deeper understanding of the synthesis of religion, philosophy, and science. By the early 1870s, Blavatsky was involved in the Spiritualist movement, which was then popular both in Britain and abroad, even though she argued against its main tenet that those 'contacted' were the spirits of the dead. She moved to the United States in 1873 and became close to the journalist Henry Steel Olcott who helped her gain public attention as a spirit medium and then also became an adherent to her principles. In 1875 in New York City she co-founded the Theosophical Society and two years later published 'Isis Unveiled', a book outlining her Theosophical world-view from its ancient roots to the modern day. Her work was even more popular in Asia than elsewhere and is said to have influenced both Ghandi and Nehru amongst many others. In 1880, she and Olcott moved to India, where the Society was allied to a Hindu reform movement. That same year she converted to Buddhism. However, she was often plagued with accusations of fraudulent paranormal phenomena. With her health failing she returned to London and published 'The Secret Doctrine', her commentary on claimed ancient Tibetan manuscripts, and other books. Helena Blavatsky died in London of influenza during the global pandemic on 8th May 1891. She was 59.

Title: Tales of Empire - A Short Story Collection

Author: H Rider Haggard, Rudyard Kipling

Narrator: Ghizela Rowe, Richard Mitchley

Format: Unabridged Audiobook

Length: 6 hours 51 minutes

Release date: January 1, 2023

Genres: LGBTQ+

Publisher's Summary:

Empires have been a fact of life for many thousands of years in all corners of the globe. Some have lasted a mere generation, others for a millennia. Some have defenders that cite advancements and security but detractors rail at the imposition of one culture upon defeated societies for no greater reason than conquest. In this volume we put together stories from a wide range of classic authors, including Rudyard Kipling, Joseph Conrad, Talbot Mundy, Letitia Elizabeth Landon, H Rider Haggard and many others to view the British Empire both from the inside as subjects and from the outside as writers through engrossing narratives. These literary leviathans could observe, sample, question and report as part of an Empire upon which the sun never set and who’s morals were sometimes good, but often bad, as it bestrode the world as Imperial policeman and bully-in-chief grabbing the profits of others as it imposed a Pax Britannica that was in reality only of real benefit to the elite at home.Times may have changed yet these stores offer a fascinating insight into the world as it was.1 - Tales of Empire - A Short Story Collection - An Introduction2 - The Man Who Would Be King - Part 1 by Rudyard Kipling3 - The Man Who Would Be King - Part 2 by Rudyard Kipling4 - Long Odds by H Rider Haggard5 - The Indian Orphan. Title: The Homecoming

Author: Anna Enquist

Narrator: Clare Corbett

Format: Unabridged Audiobook

Length: 12 hours 19 minutes

Release date: April 1, 2022

Genres: LGBTQ+

Publisher's Summary:

An internationally bestselling, award-winning novel peering deep into the passions, losses, and reveries of the wife of eighteenth-century explorer Captain James Cook. After twelve years of marriage to English explorer James Cook, Elizabeth has yet to spend an entire year with her husband. In their house by the Thames, she moves to the rhythms of her life as a society wife, but there is so much more to her than meets the eye. She has the fortitude to manage the house and garden, raise their children, and face unbearable sorrow by herself—in fact, she is sometimes in thrall to her own independence. As she prepares for another homecoming, Elizabeth looks forward to James’s triumphant return and the work she will undertake reading and editing his voluminous journals. But will the private life she’s been leading in his absence distract her from her role in aid of her husband’s grand ambitions? Can James find the compassion to support her as their family faces unimaginable loss, or must she endure life alone as he sails off toward another adventure? An intimate and sharply observed novel, The Homecoming is as revelatory as James Cook’s exploration of distant frontiers and as richly rewarding as Elizabeth’s love for her family. With courage and strength, through recollection and imagination, author Anna Enquist brilliantly narrates Elizabeth’s compelling record of her life, painting a psychological portrait of an independent woman ahead of her time and closely acquainted with history.
