    Engaging but uneven volume levels
I found this very educational and entertaining. My only complaint was that much of Debussy's music was too faint to hear without cranking the volume up all the way, which means that when the narrator conductor comes back, his voice blasted in my ears.
This complaint may not be relevant if you're listening in a very quiet environment, but I listened to this on my iPod througy my car stereo (constantly adjusting the stereo volumn knob) and through iPod earphones while commuting to work via train.
I had heard an excerpt from a different title in this series, which didn't suffer from the volume problem.
All in all, though, it was educational. As a novice to music in general, I'm in no position to judge the accuracy of the information or the depth of the conductor's interpretation, but as a beginner, I did not feel that the narrator was going over my head.
Lecture good, sound not so great
I agree with William about the unevenness of the sound levels but I won't let it detract from my rating for the quality of the lecture. As a non-musician seeking to better understand what makes Debussy's music so distinctive, it was very illuminating. When the lecture finished I was eager to listen to the pieces in their entirety. Alas, Audible does not include the second disc of the set, the one with the music on it. How disappointing.

    Musical lecture
I listened to this book about three years ago, at least until my car was broken into and the device stolen! I am sure the thief got a surprise if he was able to figure out how to turn it on.
I share the disappointment with the other listeners about the lack of music on the book. However, this is a book which needs to be "read" very slowly with several trips to the musical library in order to listen to particular pieces recommended by the author. Most of the music is familiar but the discipline of listening to the same piece more than once, looking for one thing or another, can be very enriching.
I recommend this book highly but it cannot be used as a typical Audible book listened to on the go without access to a stereo system in order to actually play the music referred to as you go along.
This book is really a musical lecture and should be viewed in that light.
    Very, very thorough
There's a fine line between assuming nothing about a listener's prior knowledge of a subject and treating them like a dummy. Fred Plotkin stayed on the high side of that line, in my opinion. "...allowing the strings to be tightened or loosened. This is called tuning." Yes, I knew that, but Plotkin is assuming nothing about my prior exposure to music, musical instruments or the business end of the industry.
Fred Plotkin's love of music shines through every word of the book, I'll give him that. This is the first time I've ever found a description of a musical instrument in need of a PG rating. ;) His is not necessarily the voice of a professional reader, but he adds a fair about of expression to a heavily academic discussion.
No, the book is not a thrill a minute, but it isn't intended to be. Almost too dry for a popular audience, but not quite dry enough for a textbook. Definitely an education in classical music for the uninitiated, though.
    Only for true beginners
First of all, to address the main question you probably have: no, there is no music in this work. It's all Mr. Plotkin talking. And I can't say he is particularly good at it, but that's perhaps not an objective observation. His speaking might not bother everyone. At any rate, he doesn't just talk about music, he talks about how to listen to it, some of the performers, some of the pieces of music and their composers, etc., and he speaks like you expect most professors to speak: as if everyone is a complete dummy. But then, to be fair, it is called Classical Music "101", so perhaps I was expecting too much. If you know anything at all about classical music, I do not recommend this item. I suppose there's nothing wrong with it if you are truly new to it though.
    Disappointing!!
This book was very disappointing. There is not a note of music in this audio selection.

    Publisher's Summary:
Opera, said Moliére, is the most expensive noise known to man. From its beginnings in the 16th Century, through to today when there are as many musical styles as there are composers, opera has fascinated, infuriated, delighted, been censored, been banned, excited riots, even won a nation its freedom. Here is the colorful story of sometimes temperamental composers and even more temperamental singers working in an art form which has produced some of man's noblest artistic creations. This absorbing history is illustrated by over 100 musical examples by Naxos artists as well as some of the greatest singers of the 20th century including Enrico Caruso and Fyodor Chaliapin.
    Members Reviews:
    somewhat disappointing
I would recommend this volume to anyone with little or no knowledge of the history of opera, but not to anyone moderately familiar with this musical genre. The last half-hour consists of opera anecdotes, which, for the most part, are disposable. Also, many times, a musical illustration is announced, only to not be actually played. An alternate recommendation is 'The History of Classical Music', by the same author, which held my attention throughout. It even has an excellent section on opera.
    Missing the music
Many of the musical illustrations appear to be either missing or cut out, making it a poor listen, and the history itself, while covering the major names with brief biographical detail and few technical terms, offers little depth or insight.
    loved it
Would you consider the audio edition of The History of Opera to be better than the print version?
yes the print version couldn't have the music
What did you like best about this story?
    The musical examples
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    no
    Any additional comments?
I would recommend this for anyone interested in opera or history in general
    Missing Music Ruins This One
Probably would have been a favorite if it didn't skip a lot of the music! Very irritating to have a piece of music introduced and then skipped. I wouldn't recommend this one to anyone as a result.
    Great overview!
This book provided just the overview I wanted. I studied violin in an orchestra and privately for years but somehow missed any history of opera completely; my music education didn't even include it.
Now that I am pursuing opera as a hobby this book provided fast and interesting insight to the historical context of many operas and composers. At times it was over whelming; I'll never remember these new names! But the book moves fast enough that you don't get bored and provides enough to keep you interested and wanting to look up more on your own.

Great info, but not ideal in audio format
    Any additional comments?
While this book offers interesting insight and info on the origins of the Great American Songbook, the format presents the information in alphabetical order, a great format for thumbing through as with a reference book, but not so good as an entertaining listen. It's like hearing the dictionary or encyclopedia read to you page by page. I'm an an avid fan of jazz and a 10 year fan of audible, but this is a tough audio book to "enjoy" as I usually do. I just want listeners to be prepared for the unconventional structure. I thought it was going to follow a more anecdotal or story-like format based on different periods of jazz history. For that kind of audio, I highly recommend the Great American Music lecture series.
Great resource, but could be greatly improved
This audiobook could be worth much more if the chapters were actually tune names (or perhaps the alphabet, with song names as sub-chapters).
It would be absolutely PRICELESS if it also linked to / contained the actual recordings the author is referring to!
Great reference in book format. Audio? Nope.
What disappointed you about The Jazz Standards?
I mistakenly thought the audio presentation might include a sample or two of some of the standards featured. Anything to break up the monotony of reading through an alphabetical catalog of featured standards.
Would you recommend The Jazz Standards to your friends? Why or why not?
I would in print format. I think the book is a fine, well-documented reference guide to most of the Jazz standards, replete with commentary on the historical framework and backdrop surrounding each. It would be enriching for example, to open the book and thumb to the reference on "Autumn in New York" when sitting down to play it.
Have you listened to any of Bob Souers other performances before? How does this one compare?
I have not listened to his other performances. Mr. Souer's delivery of the material in this book was engaging and well-crafted. Given the handicapping nature of the material itself and its organization as a reference book, I'd say Mr.

    Publisher's Summary:
From the former senior editor of Rolling Stone and author of The Holy or the Broken, called "thoughtful and illuminating" by The New York Times, a new book on the unlikely coming to be of Prince's now legendary album.
Purple Rain is a song, an album, and a film - each one a commercial success and cultural milestone. How did this semiautobiographical musical masterpiece that blurred R&B, pop, dance, and rock sounds come to alter the recording landscape and become an enduring touchstone for successive generations of fans?
Purple Rain is widely considered to be among the most important albums in music history and is often named the best soundtrack of all time. It sold over a million copies in its first week and blasted to number one on the charts, where it would remain for a full six months and eventually sell over 20 million copies worldwide. It spun off three huge hit singles, won Grammys and an Oscar, and took Prince from pop star to legend.
Coinciding with the 30th anniversary year of Purple Rain's release, acclaimed music journalist Alan Light takes a timely look at the making and incredible popularizing of this once seemingly impossible project. With impeccable research and in-depth interviews with people who witnessed Prince's audacious vision becoming a reality, Light reveals how a rising but not yet established artist from the Midwest was able not only to get Purple Rain made but deliver on his promise to conquer the world.

    Never too much info
Surprisingly there is a lot I didn't know, and this kept me entertained as well
A Must-Read For Any PRINCE Fan
As a lifelong PRINCE fan, the book offers insights fans have always wanted to know about "Purple Rain." I purchased the hard copy months ago to add to my collection of PRINCE books. I just never got around to picking it up. Unfortunately, after his death a few weeks ago, it renewed my interest -- so I bought the audiobook. However now bittersweet, it reminded me why I loved him and his mad genius so much -- always focused, different and a trailblazer. If you're a PRINCE fan (even casual), it's a must-read to learn more about one of the world's last iconic/legendary/genius musical artists at his peak -- probably the last.
This is a must for any fan of Purple Rain or Prince.
This is a must for any fan of Purple Rain or Prince. This book tells the story from people that were there when Purple Rain was being filmed.
an incredible look into the Life of a Legend
couldn't stop listening. it's a very funny, well researched, and safe and keep your attention the entire time.
    I Can't Find the Words
Since Prince has passed, I didn't think I'd be able to listen to this book. It was the perfect remedy to assist in the healing process. I still can't believe the world of music and those of us that love it so much have lost such a treasured gift, but God does all things well. I will forever have access to my memories of Prince through this audiobook. There are 2 things that I recalled while listening: 1) I miss all of the music I listened to during the 80's and 90's especially when Night Tracks and MTV were the most poplar. I knew about 98% of all of the songs mentioned!! That was fun.. 2) Prince did more to encourage my relationship with God than my Pastor at the time ever could have and I will forever be grateful.

Title: American Legends: The Life of Sam Cooke
    Author: Charles River Editors
    Narrator: Dennis Logan
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 1 hr and 10 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-22-15
    Publisher: Charles River Editors
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 7 votes
    Genres: Arts & Entertainment, Music
    Publisher's Summary:
"I think the secret is really observation. Well, if you observe what's going on and try to figure out how people are thinking, I think you can always write something that people will understand." (Sam Cooke)
A lot of ink has been spilled covering the lives of history's most influential figures, but how much of the forest is lost for the trees? In Charles River Editors' American Legends series, listeners can get caught up to speed on the lives of America's most important men and women in the time it takes to finish a commute, while learning interesting facts long forgotten or never known.
If Sam Cooke, one of the greatest African-American soul singers in the genre's history, had been Irish, he might have kept company with the likes of the great balladeer and classical tenor John McCormack. If he had been born Italian, he might have starred in the refined, lyrical Mozart opera roles usually reserved for those with extreme musical sensitivity. Such was the level of excellence in Cooke's inner understanding of his own voice, which was capable of exquisite classical precision and a finesse in phrasing that lay far beyond the norm. He could have prospered and attained greatness in any genre of his choice, but considering the timing of the American audience and his African-American heritage, Sam Cooke instead pioneered a new genre and became its greatest practitioner by blending black musical traditions that incorporated all the refinement and beauty of European classical genres yet still spoke from the heart of his rural American roots.
    Members Reviews:
Very good book for putting a face on the songs I remember hearing from years ago...
That's what I enjoy most about these books from Charles River Editors is that they provide brief accounts of individuals I had yet ever really met before. For instance I never knew Sam Cooke was one of the greatest African-American soul singers in the genre's history or the first to reach number one on both charts, pop and Rhythm & Blues, yet I do remember the songs "You Send Me" and "Wonderful Life" and now know who sung them as a result. On a side note, it helped reestablish a connection with Jim Belushi whose profile was also written about by Charles River Editors (of which I reviewed earlier) and even had a song of Cooke's in the movie "Animal House". The account of his sudden death was simply mind-boggling making it good for that alone, but overall given the tighter editing and better photos provided I thought this book was a very good one and I do recommend!
A Good Biography About a Lost, Talented, Breakthrough Artist
I still miss Sam Cooke' s wonderful voice from the 1950's. This book by Charles Rivers Editors gives an understanding of his unique talents, and is commendable in its objectivity regarding Sam Cooke' s human failings.
Excellent history and reading about Sam Cooke
Excellent history and reading about Sam Cooke. Discovered things I never would imagine about him and his short career. More than worth the price.
    very interesting
Very enjoyable read. His early gospel days and his early trouble with the law and women are well covered. Highlights from his time with Specialty records and RCA are covered as is his untimely death. I learned that his in-concert style was a tougher, grittier style than his pop hits.

    The Ptich:
With 1930s radio and Firesign Theatre in mind, Producer Aardvark and Mixerman set forth to create a full unabridged dramatization of this popular story. Complete with music, musical character motifs (ala Peter and the Wolf), foley, sound effects, and performances by some of the most well known and admired producers and mixers in the business, including: Ken Scott (The Beatles), Dave Pensado (Christina Aguillerra), Ed Cherney (Better Midler), Ron Saint Germain (U2), Jeff Lorber (Dave Koz), Joe McGrath (AFI), Dylan Dresdow (Black-Eyed Peas), William Wittman (Cyndi Lauper), Kenny Gioia (Daryl Hall & John Oates) Julian Bunetta (Hillary Duff), JP Plunier (Ben Harper), and Bob Ohllsson (Jackson 5); the two record-makers deliver an astoundingly entertaining product that is sure to provide listeners with hours of pure unadulterated enjoyment. In other words, this is not your father's audiobook. It's your great grandfathers! With a modern spin, of course.
    Summary:
The inner workings of recording sessions have long been the closely guarded secrets held only by those involved. And while some have tried to piece together the stories of sessions past, rarely do these accounts rise above the level of hearsay and folklore, distorted by the passage of time.
Enter Mixerman, a Los Angeles recording engineer who, on nothing more than a hunch, begins to chronicle the daily events of a Major Label recording session with a bidding-war band, and infamous producer, and a limitless budget. And he does it in real time - each night posting his entires on the Internet, withholding only the true identities of those he writes about.
It's apparent early on that the anonymous Mixerman is for real - distilling complicated recording procedures into simple an understandable terms. But as narrator, tour guide, and humorous off-color commentator, he also delivers a gripping and often hysterical no-holds-barred tale of a recording session gone awry.
And while the band, their manager, the label executives, the producer, and the studio staff are initially unaware that their potentially embarrassing antics are being watched by an ever-growing audience of Internet voyeurs, it is surely only a matter of time before Mixerman's diary is discovered.
God help him if that happens.
Please note: Both the print and audio editions of The Daily Adventures of Mixerman follow an unconventional, somewhat nonlinear structure. This is intentional.

    Please Note:
The highest quality file available on Audible is listed as "CD Quality." In reality, that classification is for a 192kbps MP3, and the audiobook was mastered specifically for this format. The lesser quality files are considerably degraded. Therefore, I recommend you download the highest quality you can.

    Thrilling and funny
If you could sum up The Daily Adventures of Mixerman in three words, what would they be?
    Funny, thoughtful, witty
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
    Made me laugh
    Any additional comments?
The Adventures of Mixerman details the daily trials and tribulations of a slightly cynical recording engineer during a few weeks of a rock recording project.
Every band member is suffering from either ineptitude, oversized ego or anxiety.
