    Title: The Frontiersmen
    Subtitle: A Narrative
    Author: Allan W. Eckert
    Narrator: Kevin Foley
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 30 hrs and 29 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-08-11
    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 766 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
The frontiersmen were a remarkable breed of men. They were often rough and illiterate, sometimes brutal and vicious, often seeking an escape in the wilderness of mid-America from crimes committed back east. In the beautiful but deadly country that would one day come to be known as West Virginia, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois, more often than not they left their bones to bleach beside forest paths or on the banks of the Ohio River, victims of Indians who claimed the vast virgin territory and strove to turn back the growing tide of whites.
These frontiersmen are the subjects of Allan W. Eckert's dramatic history. Against the background of such names as George Rogers Clark, Daniel Boone, Arthur St. Clair, Anthony Wayne, Simon Girty, and William Henry Harrison, Eckert has re-created the life of one of America's most outstanding heroes, Simon Kenton. Kenton's role in opening the Northwest Territory to settlement more than rivaled that of his friend Daniel Boone. By his 18th birthday, Kenton had already won frontier renown as woodsman, fighter, and scout. His incredible physical strength and endurance, his great dignity and innate kindness made him the ideal prototype of the frontier hero.
Yet there is another story to The Frontiersmen. It is equally the story of one of history's greatest leaders, whose misfortune was to be born to a doomed cause and a dying race. Tecumseh, the brilliant Shawnee chief, welded together by the sheer force of his intellect and charisma an incredible Indian confederacy that came desperately close to breaking the thrust of the white man's westward expansion. Like Kenton, Tecumseh was the paragon of his people's virtues, and the story of his life, in Eckert's hands, reveals most profoundly the grandeur and the tragedy of the American Indian.
    Critic Reviews:
"Historian-novelist Eckert has fashioned an epic narrative history of the struggle for dominance of the Ohio River Valley that makes compelling reading." (
    Publishers Weekly)

All I Can Say Is "AWESOME"
This is history at its best! Except you don't realize that you're getting a history lesson while reading it. Learning about Daniel Boone, Blue Jacket, Techumpsa (Techumpsa) and a serious frontiersman - Simon Kenton.
You certainly didn't learn this in school and would have paid more attention and enjoyed the time better if it had been taught like this book!
If you didn't realize for example, that Daniel Boone's life was saved by a frontiersman named Simon Kenton and how Daniel Boone got into that situation (as well as numerous other things that happened similarly exciting) you'll love this book in your collection.
For my own part, I could not put it down...I wanted to listen to 'what would happen next' at every idle moment.
    What more can be said?
    Couldn't put it down
First book in a long time that I couldn't put down. I stayed up until 4:00am to finish it up. The reader is the best in the industry and the content is amazing in detail. If you like early American Frontiersman stories, you'll love this one.
    Awsome Book
I have read this book several times and listening I gained a greater understanding of the life and time of notable people late 1700s frontier. Allen Eckert books are awsome and provide a picture of frontier life in Kentucky,Ohio, and Indiana.

    Title: Little Princes
Subtitle: One Man's Promise to Bring Home the Lost Children of Nepal
    Author: Conor Grennan
    Narrator: Conor Grennan
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 9 hrs and 37 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 01-25-11
    Publisher: HarperAudio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 1673 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
In search of adventure, 29-year-old Conor Grennan traded his day job for a year-long trip around the globe, a journey that began with a three-month stint volunteering at the Little Princes Children's Home, an orphanage in war-torn Nepal.
Conor was initially reluctant to volunteer, unsure whether he had the proper skill, or enough passion, to get involved in a developing country in the middle of a civil war. But he was soon overcome by the herd of rambunctious, resilient children who would challenge and reward him in a way that he had never imagined.
When Conor learned the unthinkable truth about their situation, he was stunned: The children were not orphans at all. Child traffickers were promising families in remote villages to protect their children from the civil war - for a huge fee - by taking them to safety. They would then abandon the children far from home, in the chaos of Nepal's capital, Kathmandu.
For Conor, what began as a footloose adventure becomes a commitment to reunite the children he had grown to love with their families, but this would be no small task. He would risk his life on a journey through the legendary mountains of Nepal, facing the dangers of a bloody civil war and a debilitating injury. Waiting for Conor back in Kathmandu, and hopeful he would make it out before being trapped in by snow, was the woman who would eventually become his wife and share his life's work.
Little Princes is a true story of families and children, and what one person is capable of when faced with seemingly insurmountable odds. At turns tragic, joyful, and hilarious, Little Princes is a testament to the power of faith and the ability of love to carry us beyond our wildest expectations.
    Editorial Reviews:
Consider yourself warned. Little Princes: One Mans Promise to Bring Home the Lost Children of Nepal, written and read by Conor Grennan, could very well be a life-changing listen.
Grennans tale of how he came to found Next Generation Nepal, a group dedicated to reuniting trafficked children with their families, has so many heart-grabbing highs that it is impossible not to become emotionally involved with the story. Which will linger longer: the image of the father who learns that his son, gone for nine years, is alive, or the description of the 14-year-old boy told at age five that his parents had died as he is told that his parents are alive and very, very eager to see him?
The authors style is comically self-deprecating, and he admits that at the beginning of this adventure his goal in volunteering at a Nepali orphanage was simply a justification for the luxury of a year-long break from the tedium of work. He wanted to be able to say that he had volunteered at an orphanage. Unwittingly, Grennan stepped into the world of the Little Princes Childrens Home outside of Katmandu and found his purpose in life.
Grennans incredulity at the reality of the situation that the children were not orphans but the victims of a child trafficker re-shaped his life. The honesty with which he assessed what he had planned for himself and what he became compelled to do will give any listener hope for the future.

    Publisher's Summary:
After the war, the American and Japanese governments conspired to cover up the shocking truth. Not even the families of the airmen were informed what had happened to their sons. It has remained a mystery - until now. Critics called James Bradley's last book "the best book on battle ever written." Flyboys is even better: more ambitious, more powerful, and more moving. On the island of Chichi Jima those young men would face the ultimate test. Their story - a tale of courage and daring, of war and of death, of men and of hope - will make you proud, and it will break your heart.

    Not as advertised
I bought this book (audio) for some Independence Day enjoyment, but I'm afraid it was anything but. Instead of giving an account of American Airmen fighting World War II, it was only constant barrage of how evil the United States is. Apparently Bradley is of the "blame America First" crowd, and even goes so far as to say the evils that Japan committed (torture, rape, murder, etc.) were the result of white American Christians. No, I'm not kidding --sadly, I'm not even exaggerating. It's as though he needs to give himself permission to list Japanese atrocities by dredging up American acts that occurred over a hundred years ago against Indians, Mexicans, and even whales. Yes... whales. His argument is that Japan was a peaceful paradise until they met the evil white man; a comparison that makes as much sense as saying a man saw a bank robbery and it suddenly brainwashed him into becoming a bank robber.
Also, for some inexplicable reason (vanity, perhaps?) Bradley narrates the book himself. Some authors have a gift for this, but unfortunately Bradley doesn't. I would go so far as to say he sounds like Mathew Broderick with a head cold, and is struggling with the words because he took too much NyQuil.
Overall, Bradley's book is rooted in self-loathing. If I recall correctly, he did the same thing in Flags of Our Fathers, so this is just more of the same. I wanted to enjoy this book, but instead I returned it. If I want to be told how bad America sucks I'll just turn on CNN.
    Distubing, Shocking and True!
Id like to say that this is an uplifting story of triumph it is not. It is a story of tragedy, irreconcilable loss and pain; of events of evil and actions that move the human heart to grief sixty plus years later. It is a reminder of how the will of the few can create atrocities to the many, and how some escape their judgment while innocents pay for their moral depravation. It is said that you have to understand history to understand the future I am not in a position to say, but this history I cannot internalize. You will be able to comprehend its telling, to feel its impact; but to understand into your heart you most likely cannot, I could not. Though occasionally gruesome, it is not the authors intent embellish, nor is it the authors intent to stir negative feelings among the Japanese and American people of today. His fair reporting of the events, of both sides, pulls at the very fabric of those interested in war history. I am both sorry to have listened and glad I did. I am sorry cannot I cannot be of greater help.
    Excellent book but bad narrator
I really liked this book, I found it provided a very interesting and balanced version of the world views and practices up until and during the war.

    Publisher's Summary:
The long-awaited follow-up to the mega-best-seller Kitchen Confidential
In the 10 years since his classic Kitchen Confidential first alerted us to the idiosyncrasies and lurking perils of eating out - from Monday fish to the breadbasket conspiracy - much has changed for the subculture of chefs and cooks, for the restaurant business and for Anthony Bourdain. Medium Raw explores those changes, moving back and forth from the author's bad old days to the present. Tracking his own strange and unexpected voyage from journeyman cook to globe-traveling professional eater and drinker, and even to fatherhood, Bourdain takes no prisoners as he dissects what he's seen, pausing along the way for a series of confessions, rants, investigations, and interrogations of some of the most controversial figures in food.
Beginning with a secret and highly illegal after-hours gathering of powerful chefs that he compares to a mafia summit, Bourdain pulls back the curtain, but never pulls his punches, on the modern gastronomical revolution, as only he can. Cutting right to the bone, Bourdain sets his sights on some of the biggest names in the foodie world, including David Chang, the young superstar chef who has radicalized the fine-dining landscape; the revered Alice Waters, whom he treats with unapologetic frankness; the Top Chef winners and losers; and many more.
Always he returns to the question "Why cook?" Or the more difficult "Why cook well?" Medium Raw is the deliciously funny and shockingly delectable journey to those answers, sure to delight philistines and gourmands alike.
    Critic Reviews:
"The food orbit is [Bourdains] element, and chapters on todays leading figuresfrom chef David Chang to critic Alan Richmandisplay his access, outspokenness and comedic gifts....Mr. Bourdain is a vivid, bawdy and often foul-mouthed writer. He thrills in the attack, but he is also an enthusiast who writes well about things he holds dear." (Wall Street Journal)
Full of things everybody in the food world thinks but nobody will say...If [Bourdains] sharp eye and his wicked tongue have brought him acclaim, whats kept him in the spotlight is his heart. Like Oscar Wilde, hes a moralist in the guise of a libertine. Long may he prosper. (Denver Post)
Bourdain has insight, access and good taste, and hes a naturally engaging writer...Bourdain is a hopeless romantic when it comes to food and the people who cook. The subtitles real valentines are two elegantly written profiles. (New York Times Book Review)
    Members Reviews:
    Surprisingly tender.
I loved Kitchen Confidential, in part because it was the story of a punk rock underdog from Manhattan, a demographic close to my heart and history. Occasionally over the years I have wondered how success and maturity have affected Bourdain, and this book answered most of my questions. Bourdain narrates, which is all important. The chapters on the dissolution of his marriage and his grappling with fame were moving, and quite sad. I found it laudable that he has the ability to admit that he's a jerk and has been wrong about a lot of things. And the section on the fish expert at Le Bernardin is just amazingly good journalism. Yes, he can be a strident, opinionated blowhard, but I think that's part of his charm.

    Amazing story
What made the experience of listening to The Teachings of Don Juan the most enjoyable?
The narrator is great. Story is amazing. The wisdom is so unique and one of kind.
What other book might you compare The Teachings of Don Juan to and why?
So unique it's hard to compare to anything else.
What does Luis Moreno bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
TONE!! Luis has an amazing ability to transition between characters so well. So far he is the best narrator I've heard.
Whats the most interesting tidbit youve picked up from this book?
The extent a person is willing to go to acquire knowledge. Reminds me of me.
    Any additional comments?
An absolute must for all students of shamanic culture.
    The Teachings of Don Juan
I was very fortunate to have actually met the author. This was sometime in the late seventies or early eighties. I was living with my teacher, who was a native american medicine person. When this odd sort of person just showed up one day and stayed for... somewhere around one or two weeks. He would always sit away from the main group and simply watch, listen, and write. I do not wish to elaborate here, but I have to say that the personal experiences I had when I would notice him were enough to make me believe that Mr. Castaneda did indeed have a spiritual gift and that he had also received some very real training. He ended up leaving a notebook behind when he left and I did read what he had written. One page included an unpublished declaration of release, by Don Juan. To this very day, I still use it!
    Not quite what I expected
If you could sum up The Teachings of Don Juan in three words, what would they be?
The world is a dark and frightening place that's out to get you unless you have a powerful ally or access to magic powers.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
Didn't make it to the ending.
If you could give The Teachings of Don Juan a new subtitle, what would it be?
    For shamanic practitioners
    Any additional comments?
I can't quite blame it on the book, to be honest. Rather it was a case of misplaced expectations on my part. For some reason I expected it to be a story of an inspiring spiritual journey, self discovery and rising consciousness. Instead it was a very detailed and meticulously transcribed personal encounter with shamanic culture and rituals. I found the narrator talented and artistic, who used his quite voice skillfully to enhance the drama of the story. Again, you may find the book fascinating if you are interested in the shamanic culture.

    Release date: 04-19-10
    Publisher: Audio Connoisseur
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 785 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
This classic war memoir, first published in 1920, is based on the author's extensive diaries describing hard combat experienced on the Western Front during World War I. It has been greatly admired by people as diverse as Bertolt Brecht and Andre Gide, and from every part of the political spectrum.
Hypnotic, thrilling, and magnificent, The Storm of Steel is perhaps the most fascinating description of modern warfare ever written. Out of the maelstrom of World War I emerge scenes which could have come straight from Dante's Inferno. Once you begin listening, you cannot stop. And it never relents: nerve pounding bombardments, agonizing gas attacks, sudden death that takes down a comrade next to you, and the occasional weeks of relief to restore the spirit when leave is granted to visit some attractive French village...all enveloped in the ghostly confusion of war.
Ultimately, survival comes down to sheer luck. Jünger displays no anger toward his enemies, and near the end he grows fatalistic and weary, even as he redoubles his resolve and maintains his patriotism. Jünger's great book calmly conveys the mysterious attraction of war, the exhilaration of battle, and the undeniable glory of brave men. But he also describes the scenes of soldiers preparing for battle as though they were "some terrible, silent ceremonial that portends human sacrifice."
    Members Reviews:
World War I from a German Viewpoint
Junger's excellent diary of four years' war is put down in highly descriptive prose. He never looses sight of the beauties of nature in a time of horror. The comparison with the descriptions of the same tragedy by Graves and Sassoon will not escape the reader. Junger's unflinching love and support of the Motherland shows through until the end. It is easy to compare the values of the three writers under similar conditions. Junger was in constant combat for four years and served in most of the major battles of the Western Front. He was wounded seven times and received the "Pour le Merit" (Blue Max) for his service. The only fault I found with this great book is that he makes it somewhat difficult to relate his descriptions of war in a limited area to the overall engagement. This is the view from the trench as he watched it unfold and is a classic work of military literature.
    Horror and randomness of war
Somehow, against incredible odds, Ernst Junger served and survived the entire duration of the First World War. Junger relates the death and devastation he witnessed as though he was more than a participant engaged in a titanic struggle. It's as if he were a reporter relating the hell he witnessed. His words evoked images in my mind as though I was sitting on some hillside watching it all. Of the many first hand accounts of battle I have read, and there have been dozens, none compare to this one. Any reader who enjoys the kind of book that leaves them wanting more will relish this memoir.
    Essential listen
If you could sum up The Storm of Steel in three words, what would they be?
    Invigorating, poetic, enlightening.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Storm of Steel?
They broke up chapters of the book with the sounds of artillery and machine gun fire. This made you feel like you were in the trenches. The language was clever and insightful. You felt more respect for those men with every word.

    Ban abridged versions
I love this story in its full length. I was not paying attention when I got this version and am irritated when I listen to it. The edits are very abrupt and part of the enjoyment of this book is meandering through their year, not racing through like a fire sale.
It would be 5 star unabridged.
    Awful editing
Love the story. Love the writing. Love the narration.
Horrid, awful, sudden, jerking editing. There is no pause between stories or chapters. It's disconcerting. Like whiplash.

    Publisher: Simon & Schuster Audio

Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
"A thrilling action ride of a book" (The New York Times Book Review) - from Jerry Bruckheimer in theaters everywhere January 19, 2018 - the New York Times best-selling, true-life account of a US Special Forces team deployed to dangerous, war-ridden Afghanistan in the weeks following 9/11.
Previously published as Horse Soldiers, 12 Strong is the dramatic account of a small band of Special Forces soldiers who secretly entered Afghanistan following 9/11 and rode to war on horses against the Taliban. Outnumbered 40 to one, they pursued the enemy army across the mountainous Afghanistan terrain and, after a series of intense battles, captured the city of Mazar-i-Sharif. The bone-weary American soldiers were welcomed as liberators as they rode into the city. Then the action took a wholly unexpected turn.
During a surrender of 600 Taliban troops, the Horse Soldiers were ambushed by the would-be POWs. Dangerously overpowered, they fought for their lives in the city's immense fortress, Qala-i-Janghi, or the House of War. At risk were the military gains of the entire campaign: If the soldiers perished or were captured, the entire effort to outmaneuver the Taliban was likely doomed.
"A riveting story of the brave and resourceful American warriors who rode into Afghanistan after 9/11 and waged war against Al Qaeda" (Tom Brokaw), Doug Stanton's account touches the mythic. The soldiers on horses combined ancient strategies of cavalry warfare with 21st century aerial bombardment technology to perform a seemingly impossible feat. Moreover, their careful effort to win the hearts of local townspeople proved a valuable lesson for America's ongoing efforts in Afghanistan. With "spellbinding...action packed prose...The book reads more like a novel than a military history...the Horse Soldier's secret mission remains the US military's finest moment in what has since arguably been a muddled war" (USA Today).
    Critic Reviews:
"...a great read - a riveting story of the brave and resourceful American warriors who rode into Afghanistan after 9/11 and waged war against Al Qaeda. We're hearing many of these stories for the first time - and from those who waged a war worthy of Rudyard Kipling, James Bond, and Davy Crockett." (Tom Brokaw)

    What an Abridgement Should Be
This is absolutely a keen account of what happens when US soldiers find themselves deployed in a unit dependent upon horse power (no pun intended). Journalist Doug Stanton tells the story of the first forces into Afghanistan, how they adapted, and their day-to-day sacrifice. It is a tale of those who laid-it-all-on-the-line to complete their mission. The writing, well it could be better. The story, however, will hit the listener between the eyes. This is not literature - so read it as a journalist's report and you will receive great benefit. Now about the format --- This is an abridged version of the book. Frankly, I find the abridgements available disjointed at best and cut-and-paste at worst. The abridgement of Horse Soldiers, however, was easy to listen to. The abridgement did not distract from the story. Enjoy.
    pretty good, but jumpy
It was a very interesting book, well told. I kept getting the feeling though, that I was missing something, perhaps due to the abridgement.

I am ruined for modern life
Daniel Boone has been a personal hero of mine for a long time, but after this extensive biography, I feel that I have come to know the real Boone underneath the huge legend. I see so much of the little boy that I was in this account of Boone. Running out of the house with a pack filled with rope, a sandwich and a flashlight to follow the creek in my parent's backyard all day until dark. I have always loved the outdoors, and felt that there must certainly be something wonderful just a little deeper into the woods, or farther down the creek.I believe that many of us can connect with the yearning to live the adventures of Boone and to be as blessed as he was to come out safe in the end. Stripping away the legend, Mr. Morgan leaves the listener/reader with a simple, endearing and honest impression of Boone as he was. I appreciated that rather than explaining away or ignoring the flaws and shortcomings of Daniel Boone, the author recorded them, and put them into the context of a multifaceted person. One example was in regard to his familiarity with and seeming acceptance of slavery. He states that this goes to show that even good people, who know better, sometimes go along with what is familiar to them and accepted by society at large. He doesn't say that Boone was a saint, or a devil, but a man that tried to be a good person, and that sometimes he was a member of a society that had improvements to make.
    A movie for your mind
Very well constructed, written and narrated, I had a hard time putting it down.
    Excellent
The best Boone biography I have read. Fresh and authentic.
    Worth the Price
Would you listen to Boone again? Why?
Yes, because I am a history buff and this book was long and detailed.
What does James Jenner bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Convenience. This book was long and I would not have spent the time to read it.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    No.
    More than a Coonskin Cap!
This biography is a revelation. Those of us who knew Boone mainly as a Disney-like character who wanted "elbow room" will learn a lot about Daniel Boone and his life and times. Faults are not ignored, and we see a man who both represented and outlived the earliest days of the American dream of exploration and adventure.
This is a long book and may contain more detail than many people want, but it is none the less a fascinating tale. Boone may have become an iconic character of the American expansion story, but he was also an interesting man of many dimensions. One comes away from this book with a more realistic view of early America, of the tall-tales about our heroes, and of this particular man. Does our modern PC view of the treatment of Indians, of greed and destruction of the environment diminish the heroes of old? Of course, but seeing men like Boone in a historical and more realistic light gives a needed perspective to our folktales.
