    Title: Carly's Voice
    Subtitle: Breaking Through Autism
    Author: Arthur Fleischmann, Carly Fleischmann
    Narrator: Patrick Lawlor, Cassandra Campbell
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 11 hrs and 49 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-27-12
    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 236 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
At the age of two, Carly Fleischmann was diagnosed with severe autism and an oral motor condition that prevented her from speaking. Doctors predicted that she would never intellectually develop beyond the abilities of a small child. Although she made some progress after years of intensive behavioral and communication therapy, Carly remained largely unreachable. Then, at age 10, Carly had a breakthrough. While sitting in her kitchen with her devoted therapist, Howie, Carly reached over to the laptop and typed "MEAN", referring to Howie's efforts to get her to do her work for the day. She then went on to further explain her recalcitrant mood by typing "TEETH HURT", much to Howie's astonishment. This was the beginning of Carly's journey toward self-realization.
Although Carly still struggles with all the symptoms of autism, which she describes with uncanny accuracy and detail, she now has regular, witty, and profound conversations on the computer with her family, her therapists, and the thousands of people who follow her via her blog and on Facebook and Twitter. A 2009 segment on 20/20 brought her story to national attention, and she has since appeared on television with Larry King, Ellen DeGeneres, and Holly Robinson Peete, all of whom have developed warm relationships with her.
In Carly's Voice, her father, Arthur Fleischmann, blends Carly's own words with his story of getting to know his remarkable daughter. One of the first books to explore firsthand the challenges of living with autism, it brings listeners inside a once-secret world in the company of an inspiring young woman who has found her voice and her mission.
    Critic Reviews:
"Carly's Voice makes it very clear that a non-verbal person with autism has a rich inner life. Typing independently enabled Carly to express wit, explain her sensory problems, and show that a good mind has been freed." (Temple Grandin)

    A peek inside...
What made the experience of listening to Carly's Voice the most enjoyable?
I am a teacher of students with Autism. I often wonder what they are thinking. This book gave me an opportunity to possibly find out. No person with Autism is the same but they do have similar characteristics. This book helped me to better understand my students and the reasons they do the things they do. Hearing from Carly as to why she reacts a certain way or why she does/does not do a specific thing made sense. It also gives you incite as to how the family lives and deals with the daily challenges they face.
I recommend this book to everyone. With that number of people with Autism growing, it would be beneficial to understand the challenges they and their families face. Although no person with Autism is the same it is good start to peek inside their life and better understand the world they live in.
    So inspiring
I was moved by this amazing girl. I also work with an amazing girl very much like Carly. She is, like Carly, nonverbal with full blown Autism, complete with the behaviors that go with the lack of communication. She is, like Carly, writing and communicating with the use of a device. We both listened to "Carly's Voice" on audio. She is, unlike Carly, still requiring a supported hand when writing.

Here's Tucker Max's third and final book in his series of stories about his drunken debauchery and ridiculous antics. What began as a simple sentence on an obscure website, "My name is Tucker Max, and I am an asshole," and developed into two infamously genre-defining books, I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell and Assholes Finish First, ends here. But as you should expect from Tucker by now, he is going out with a bang - literally and figuratively.
    In this book, you'll learn:
He's still Tucker Max, and - for one more book - he's still an asshole.

    Great stories!
Great audio book! Tucker's stories kept me making time to listen. Thanks for sharing Brother!
I like Tucker Max because his stories are NOT for everyone & his books stop me from killing myself
All you people, wait I should say WOMEN need to understand that these books are not your romantic novels or kid friendly stuff they are vulgar true stories that he uses as therapy for an inner problem he has. So you need to lay off of him & learn to laugh because I sure do at his stuff. Tucker Max for President!!!
    Hilarious...thank you Tucker for narrating.
Listen and laugh. Some of the most enjoyable material you will ever read/listen to. A ridiculous riding off into the sunset for Mr. Max.
    favorite author
Worth the listen! better performance than past audio books. I have followed his career and have never been disappointed.
More of the same, which is pretty d@mn funny
What made the experience of listening to Hilarity Ensues the most enjoyable?
The author narrates, and his satisfaction with his own handy-work comes through in the audio format.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
I love the story about him getting a huge sound system in a new car and immediately driving off to find a cop to get a noise violation.
The stories about just getting wasted and annoying people were a little boring.
What does Tucker Max bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
The book is a collection of funny stories. Everyone likes to tell their funny stories, and I think in audio format you get more of the feel of hanging out with a friend and telling hilarious story than just reading them.
    Any additional comments?
If you are familiar with this genre, you won't be amazed, but not disappointed either.

    Critic Reviews:
"A unique, inspiring story by a member of the Greatest Generation." (Kirkus)
    Members Reviews:
    Interesting Listen for WWII Buffs
    Any additional comments?
This book is the autobiography of one of the original Navajo code-talkers--the original group who invented the code that baffled Japanese cryptographers during World War II. Because the code remained classified until 1968, it's only recently that these men have received due credit for their remarkable achievement.
From life near the reservation in New Mexico, through a boarding school experience that can only be described as Dickensian, the story highlights the remarkable toughness and generosity of spirit of these young Navajo men. It's hard for most of us to imagine a childhood that involved being shipped away to boarding school--and at the end of the year, at the age of 8, with a 5-year-old sister in tow, having to walk home for three days with only a bag of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, and being expected to find water along the way. But this toughness would stand Nez and his comrades in good stead during the war.
It's not surprising that these young men actually expressed delight at the quantity and quality of military rations.
I'd recommend this to anyone interested in the Pacific war, in the Native American experience, or in codes and cryptography. It could only have happened because a rather cruel experience produced people with just the right skills, who had the generosity of spirit to fight for a country that hadn't treated them well. Nez is in his 90's now, and is the last survivor of the original group. I'm glad that his story got written down.
    a fascinating book
I loved this book. The native americans have been mistreated and treated unfairly, but when they had an opportunity to do so, they stepped forward without hesitation and made one of the biggest contributions to winning the war over Japan . I loved hearing the story of the life of this humble man. His story made me want to learn more about the navajo culture.
    Untagged heroes
I had heard of the code talkers when the news was first released about their activities but had not given it much thought until I picked up this book.
They really WERE heroes. I had imagined them at a desk, talking into microphones. In this story I learn they were in the rot of the jungle, carrying rifles and fighting for their lives (and mine.) Most of my family were Marines that fought in that area so I thank them for their help in bringing those members of my family home.
Two stories: life as a Navajo and a marine in WWII
Told in a simple but very true voice, this story is fascinating. Chester's childhood as a traditional Navajo was a happy one of following the herds of sheep and goats until he was sent to boarding school. The school was very hard but he learned English and it was his dual fluency in Navajo and English that allowed him to be one of the original Code Talkers who developed the Navajo code that was one of the most valuable weapons the marines had in the Pacific.

Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
"I've started horses since I was 12 years old and have been bit, kicked, bucked off and run over. I've tried every physical means to contain my horse in an effort to keep from getting myself killed. I started to realize that things would come much easier for me once I learned why a horse does what he does. This method works well for me because of the kinship that develops between horse and rider." Buck Brannaman
In The Faraway Horses, Buck Brannaman shares his renowned methods for horse training and provides a behind-the-scenes glimpse into Robert Redford's movie The Horse Whisperer, for which he was the technical adviser.
    Critic Reviews:
"Buck Brannaman is part of a lineage of skilled horsemen, and for the horses he works with, it is about trust and understanding, not submission." (Robert Redford)
    Members Reviews:
More autobiography than training tips yet powerful
A friend of mine is a big Buck Brannaman fan and about 14 or 15 years ago took to me to one of his clinics just to watch from the sidelines. I wasn't feeling good that day, but went, and came away wondering why people paid to be at his clinics when there were times he said things that could make their feelings hurt . . . or said things that gave me the impression that he was soured on people due to all that he had to fix in horses. He seemed so grim to me that day.
My friend was disappointed that I didn't view Buck Brannaman the same way she did. And, I couldn't understand her view either. I was fairly new to horses then, and since then have learned a lot more about them. And, about myself.
I enjoyed the movie Buck and my friend who won't go to movies went after I raved about it to her and she enjoyed it too. Said she was going to buy the dvd.
So, I had listened to two of Mark Rashid's audio books and decided to listen to The Faraway Horses since someone left a feedback that the two were very similar.
Not sure I agree with them being "very" similar after listening to this book, but their paths were somewhat parallel. Buck Brannaman's path was pretty rocky from the start and I had just started the book where he told of his childhood. I went to sleep and woke in the middle of the night, so upset and disturbed by the abuse he and his brother had experienced. Not just the physical abuse, but also the other terrible things, such as the slaughter of his friend the bull. The book is pretty powerful in parts, having an impact with such revelations.
His journey has been interesting, and I have a better understanding of his public side, and appreciate all he has done to shine light on abusive practices . . . he doesn't pussyfoot around when a person needs to be told something when the telling will improve things for horses.
I knew some of what had happened in the Arabian show world and used to write about it and even called the Arabian Horse Association when I witnessed some things, but the story Buck told about the Arabian stallion in Scottsdale was sad and enlightening.
There is so much I need to learn about horses, and myself, and I appreciate and respect Buck Brannaman sharing his journey, knowledge, and experiences.

    Title: Following Atticus
Subtitle: Forty-Eight High Peaks, One Little Dog, and an Extraordinary Friendship

    Narrator: Tom Ryan
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 9 hrs and 4 mins

    Release date: 09-20-11
    Publisher: HarperAudio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 403 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
A middle-aged, overweight, and acrophobic newspaper editor Tom Ryan and a little dog, Atticus M. Finch, are an unlikely pair of mountaineers, but after a close friend dies of cancer, the two pay tribute to her by attempting to climb all forty-eight of New Hampshire's four-thousand-foot peaks twice in one winter. Tom and Atticus set out on an adventure of a lifetime that takes them across hundreds of miles and deep into an enchanting but dangerous winter wonderland. Little did they know that their most difficult test would lie ahead, after they returned home....
Following Atticus is ultimately a story of transformation: how a five-pound puppy pierced the heart of a tough-as-nails newspaperman, opening his eyes to the world's beauty and its possibilities. An unforgettable saga of adventure, friendship, and the unlikeliest of family, it's an inspiring tale of finding love and discovering your true self.
    Members Reviews:
A True Story of Personal Transformation
I have never had so many people recommend a book to me as I have had this one. There's a reason. "Following Atticus" is about a middle-aged guy who hikes 4,000 footers in the White Mountains alone with his 20 pound Miniature Schnauzer. I am a middle-aged guy who hikes 4,000 footers in the White Mountains alone with my 20 pound Boston Terrier. Although a lot of people hike with dogs, one hardly ever sees 20 pound dogs on the high trails. In fact, one of the few I've ever seen is Atticus himself, whom I met hiking the Mount Caribou trail.
"Following Atticus" is a testament to truth being better than fiction. Dog lovers will all be captivated by the tale. But it's not a merely a dog book. It's a book of personal transformation on the part of the author. Some of that transformation is physical. You can look up photos of the author on the internet from his pre-Following Atticus days and compare them to recent photos to see this for yourself. Between the weight loss and the exercise, Tom Ryan looks like a different person. From "Following Atticus" we learn how the author became a different person on the inside, too -- a better person -- due to the influence of two great dogs in his life.
The book is read by the author. This adds to the reality of the story and conveys a sense of feeling that one would not get from a professional reader. The author does an excellent job of reading, but the listener should be prepared for a strong Boston accent.
There's a Youtube video trailer for the book, which I recommend for those who would like a glimpse of Atticus and Tom Ryan -- and the other great character of the book -- the White Mountains.
More Than Just Man/Man's Best Friend!
I was so thrilled with this book! I often get a hankering for a good animal story as usually they're so wonderful and inspirational. Following Atticus did not disappoint!
What I really liked about this book was that yes, it follows Tom and Atticus on their journey, but it also follows Tom as he discovers himself along the way and becomes who he's meant to be. And most of it is because of an adorable little dog, Atticus.

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 6 hrs and 54 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-20-11
    Publisher: Zondervan
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 751 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
In 1987, Dr. Benjamin Carson gained worldwide recognition for his part in the first successful separation of Siamese twins joined at the back of the head. The extremely complex and delicate operation, five months in the planning and twenty-two hours in the execution, involved a surgical plan that Carson helped initiate. Carson pioneered again in a rare procedure known as hemispherectomy, giving children without hope a second chance at life through a daring operation in which he literally removed one half of their brain.
But such breakthroughs aren't unusual for Ben Carson. He's been beating the odds since he was a child. Raised in inner-city Detroit by a mother with a third-grade education, Ben lacked motivation. He had terrible grades. And a pathological temper threatened to put him in jail. But Sonya Carson convinced her son that he could make something of his life, even though everything around him said otherwise. Trust in God, a relentless belief in his own capabilities, and sheer determination catapulted Ben from failing grades to the top of his class - and beyond to a Yale scholarship, the University of Michigan Medical School, and finally, at age 33, to the directorship of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland.
Today, Dr. Ben Carson holds 20 honorary doctorates and is the possessor of a long string of honors and awards, including the Horatio Alger Award, induction into the "Great Blacks in Wax" Museum in Baltimore, Maryland, and an invitation as Keynote Speaker at the 1997 President's National Prayer Breakfast.
Gifted Hands is the riveting story of one man's secret for success, tested against daunting odds and driven by an incredible mindset that dares to take risks. This inspiring autobiography takes you into the operating room to witness surgeries that made headlines around the world - and into the private mind of a compassionate, God-fearing physician who lives to help others. Through it all shines a humility, quick wit, and down-to-earth style that make this book one you won't easily forget.
    Members Reviews:
    Absolutely inspiring!
    Any additional comments?
My book club selected this book and at first look I was going to skip it. I would have missed out. Dion Graham's pleasant voice brings you through Ben Carson's amazing life, from a struggling black kid in Detroit, raised by a single mom, through his college years, how he chose his profession as a pediatric neurosurgeon, internship, residency, etc. I'm most impressed with how he turned to God in times of trial, and gives the credit to God for who he has become and the things he's been able to do in his life.
Like I said, I didn't want to read it at first, and the first few chapters he did sound like a bragger at times. However, his mom Was pretty amazing, and it's hard to tell your own story, getting to the top of your class, etc. without sounding a little bit big headed. But somewhere along the story, my heart changed and I became very impressed with this guy. He ends the book with his advice on how everyone can succeed.

In the 70s and 80s, thousands of Hmong families made the journey from the war-torn jungles of Laos to the overcrowded refugee camps of Thailand and onward to the United States, all in search of a new place to call home. Decades later, their experiences remain largely unknown.
Kao Kalia Yang was driven to tell her own family's story after her grandmothers death. The Latehomecomer is a tribute to that grandmother, a remarkable woman whose spirit held her family together through their imprisonment in Laos, their narrow escape into Thailand's Ban Vinai Refugee Camp, their immigration to St. Paul when Yang was only six years old, and their transition to life in America. It is also an eloquent firsthand account of a people who have worked hard to make their voices heard in their adopted homeland.
    Critic Reviews:
"Yang tells her familys story with grace; she narrates their struggles, beautifully weaving in Hmong folklore and culture. By the end of this moving, unforgettable book, when Yang describes the death of her beloved grandmother, readers will delight at how intimately they have become part of this formerly strange culture." Title: Secretariat
    Author: William Nack
    Narrator: Grover Gardner
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 14 hrs and 39 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-02-11
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 377 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
In 1973, Secretariat, the greatest champion in horse-racing history, won the Triple Crown. The only horse to ever grace the covers of Time, Newsweek, and Sports Illustrated in the same week, he also still holds the record for the fastest times in both the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont Stakes. He was also the only non-human chosen as one of ESPN's "50 Greatest Athletes of the Century". The tale of "Big Red" is an enduring and inspiring classic, more than 30 years after its initial publication.
    Editorial Reviews:
Youve likely seen footage of Triple Crown champion Secretariats remarkable racing career, and Grover Gardner brings us even closer to the track in his narration of William Nacks enthralling investigation of the life and career of the champion thoroughbred first published in 1975. Gardners deep and robust voice heightens the intensity of those scenes when Secretariat bounds full throttle towards the finish line. Although aware of the outcome already, the suspense and excitement of the competition build all the same throughout this performance.
Following a record-shattering win at the Belmont Stakes in 1973, American thoroughbred racehorse Secretariat (fondly nicknamed Big Red by his fanbase) became the first Triple Crown winner in over a quarter-century. His performance has since been unmatched by any other competitor today. Secretariat charts the horses career from his calculated birth to his achieving the Triple Crown. Nack traces Secretariats lineage, studying his breeding and ownership by two families the Chenerys of Meadow Farm in Caroline County, Virginia, and the Hancocks of Claiborne Farm in Paris, Kentucky. These individuals involved in Secretariats victory make up a fascinating piece of his history and upbringing.
While horse lovers will thoroughly enjoy Secretariat, fans of investigative biographies and suspenseful narratives will devour Gardners rendition of this powerful athletes success story. The politics of the Triple Crown make for an intriguing sidebar to this story. Gardner plunges into Secretariats competitions with enthusiasm, and his smooth southern accent offers a pleasant reprieve from each pulse-pounding race. Secretariat triumphs in its depiction of horse racing and in moments of quiet investigation.
    Critic Reviews:
"Secretariat is an elegantly crafted, exhilarating tale of speed and power, grace and greatness, told with such immediacy that the reader is lost in the rush of horses and the clatter and ring of the grandstand." (Laura Hillenbrand, best-selling author of Seabiscuit)
    Members Reviews:
The story of a great athlete
The headline refers to the fact that in 1999 ESPN counted down the top 50 athletes of the 20th century and Secretariat was ranked 35th. This book by William Nack was the basis for the movie starring Diane Lane as Penny Chenery the horse's owner.
I can remember watching the Triple Crown races with interest for the time in 1973. I had seen the races previously because my mother watched them every year but in 1973 there was enough buzz that I watched them eagerly. This was especially true of the Belmont Stakes when this magnificent athlete was in line to win the first triple crown in 25 years. If you're a fan of great athletes watching Secretariat stretch out the lead in the third quarter mile and eventually win the race by 31 lengths is as stirring as any two legged athletic accomplishment.

    Stories of Corrie's Evangelical Journey
I selected this book thinking I would learn about Corrie ten Boom's time in a Nazi concentration camp and forgiveness. It was more about the years after the camp when she started traveling to spread the gospel. This book was her second book, written in 1953 when she was in her late 50s. "The Hiding Place" was written 18 years after that. Amazing woman, but not what I was looking for.
As always, Nadia May is wonderful. I must admit she was part of the reason why I decided to give this book, which is a very different read for me a try.
