Struggled to Finish

What disappointed you about What I Was Doing While You Were Breeding?

The author's logic while she stumbles through her path-finding mid-life struggle makes it difficult to root for her. It's kind of like watching someone try and feed a folded bill into a vending machine while they get infuriated that the machine won't accept it. She's adventurous, but I found myself rolling my eyes for most of the book.

What didnt you like about Kristin Newmans performance?

The author's tone when reading this book irritated me almost as much as the hollow story itself. It felt like she was rambling in a monotone cadence.

Any additional comments?

Worth the read/listen for people who are single and in their late 20s or early 30s. It will be reassuring to know that if someone with a compass that broken can find someone, you can too. Harsh? Yes. Honest? Yes.

Every avid female traveler should read this

I have never related to any book like I have with this one. Funny, entertaining and spot on.

Self absorbed monologue

Kind of like listening to Trump talk if he were a liberal woman. Could only make myself listen to it on the treadmill in between shows because running in place for hours is the only activity in my life more monotonous than listening to this book.

The legend

I wanted to read this book because I know so little about Kobe even though I followed his entire career. This book is very detailed from his mother and father, Kobe as a child, all the way up to to when he retired. You can tell they can't say anything bad because Kobe wouldn't approve it but there is definitely some stories they left out about Kobe. they only kept in the good stuff he did. they even made the rape case not sound that bad in this book.

Only for a die hard NBA/Lakers fan

I had been hoping for more insight into Kobe as an athlete, but what I found instead was a book about his father's life followed by a lot of specific scores and games during his career as a Laker and a background on Adidas. The narrator was great, but just not what I had hoped for.

The Definition of Confidence.

This book was a great prospective into the world Kobe's work ethic, determination, and unwavering confidence. The author did a fantastic job gathering information from the people that lived it and experienced these events in real time. The narrator did an excellent job over the course of the hours giving an enthusiastic performance.

A MUST read for all women

OH MY GOD. This is the book I've needed and wanted! ever since I heard about Patrice I have been so bummed they didn't have anything like this in Canada. I've never felt that confident about cars and as of right now I am looking to get my first car and I know for a fact I would be the kind of woman to avoid mechanics and the alerts on my car for as long as possible just because I feel like I would be getting ripped off or taken advantage of. And I want to take care of my car and have it last as long as possible

I haven't yet finished this book but even with the first half its given me a better outlook on what to expect on having my first car, and what to do and felt like no question was a dumb one.

I will FOR SURE be buying this to keep in my glove box and to go over as a refresher every once in awhile. I recommend any women young or old to check this book out. It feels really good to be able to rely on yourself for things instead of trying to pass off car issues onto a guy.

It was a Xmas gift to my daughter, and she loves it.

I learned more about cars in the first 5 minutes than what I've learned about cars from 20 + years of driving.

Great book. Informative, entertaining, and easy to read. I love the diagrams so you can see what she's talking about. OMG this book is everything!

It helps me to make better decisions about my car, and keeps me informed when I'm not sure what things are, concerning my car. Dispels the myths, and is written in basic language with some visuals to help guide.

I guess its my own fault but I did not realize this was an abridged version. I was so disappointed. 15+ hours down to 4.5.

Amazing stories from an incredible storyteller

I think this is the best audiobook I've listened to.

What did you like best about this story?

McCourt's stories of his childhood in the U.S. and Ireland bring up so many different emotions, sometimes simultaneously. I laughed so much, despite the tales of sadness and despair.

What about Frank McCourts performance did you like?

He is (or was) a master storyteller. I loved that he sang the songs and did the various voices. Listening to this was like stumbling into a pub and sitting next to McCourt as he recounts his life.

Any additional comments?

Everyone should listen to this audiobook, even if you've read the print version. Each is amazing in its own way. I was so sad when the book was over that I immediately downloaded 'Tis, which picks up after Angela's Ashes.

The Reality of the U.S in the Vietnam War

What made the experience of listening to A Rumor of War the most enjoyable?

The narration by L.J. Ganser convinced me I was listening to Philip Caputo. Caputo's story is believable and frank. It does not gloss over or dwell on the mistakes of U.S. involvement in the Vietnam war nor does it dwell on them. This is a story of political naivety and the reality of being a professional soldier.

As a former soldier of the Vietnam era I could identify with his experiences and empathized with the changes he went through from enlistment to his days of being a war correspondent.

What was one of the most memorable moments of A Rumor of War?

The near mental breakdown when Philip Caputo started to visualise all around him as corpses.

What about L. J. Gansers performance did you like?

He sounded like what I would expect Philip Caputo to sound like. He had peculiarities of military jargon down pat. His range voices was true to the individual characters and allowed the listener to immerse themselves in the story and kept the characters different and distinctive.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When Caputo realises that his classmate was one of the statistics that he had to record.

A fantastic listen and a true to life account of Marine officer's experience in early Vietnam.

Excellent First Person Narrative

Wonderfully read first person account of a young Marine officer in the early days of the Vietnam War. For us history/military fans, it is a nice break from the dry Generals perspective, to what it is like to be a grunt in the field. Worth the buy.

The events within this book will stay with you for quite a long time. Vivid descriptions of jungle life and what the soldiers felt are told in easy to understand ways. However, I cannot say that this beats "Dispatches." Yes, you do get a first hand account of how hard soldiers had it, BUT, I have to say I felt more "emotion" with Dispatches. A Rumor of War is a good book, although not my favorite Vietnam book.

Vignettes for an Unborn Daughter

Knausgrd has published a beautiful (both the HB Penguin press printing and the writing) book. Obviously, one of four. Why start in Autumn? Why not. I'm not sure if this was an idea that came to him one summer and so the obvious time to start was the beginning of the next season. Who knows. But the structure is relatively (and seductively) simple. Knausgrd writes every day for three months on a variety of subjects, for example:

Piss

War

Labia

Twilight

Forgiveness

Buttons

Pain

These subjects range from specific items or people to general abstractions. These vignettes are the subject. The organizational principle is Knausgrd's desire to transmit information, knowledge, a sense of place and understanding to his unborn daughter (his fourth child?). Therefore, each month (September, October, November) also begins with a "Letter to an Unborn Daughter". He wants to show his embryonic child the world as it is now. He wants to describe the beauty, the banality, the NOW. Like his previous "novels" Knausgrd world centers on his family. But where his My Struggle cycle began with his father's death and was primarily concerned with history (fictionalized or not), his Seasons cycle (at least so far) seems to be grounded in the present or the future. It is interesting that this cycle starts with the promise of a birth.

Just so you know.

I've listened to other books that have redacted content. When one of those sections was reached by the narrator, an overview of the redacted content was addressed and the narration moved on. Here you are treated to music for the duration of the missing content. This is just a guess as I didn't time these sections or the bumper music between chapters or the twelve second dead space's following those, but my guess is that the reader is getting about eight hours of content. Loved the story. Tied several things together from other things I've read. This isn't about the content. It's about heavily padding the time. You (redacted) been warned!

I don't know if I like this audiobook or not because I was too annoying by the censorship.

The narrator informs you that because this is a book about the CIA certain parts have been removed and replaced with classical music on the behest of the CIA. What the narrator neglects to tell you is that these removed sections account for about 20% of the entire book. It's annoying, immediately annoying.

The narrator was fine.

On April 18, 1944, Rifcha and her family were ripped from their home and taken by gunpoint to the Mukacheve Ghetto. The conditions were harsh and virulent but the entire family was alive and together. Their stay in Mukacheve Ghetto was brief. One month later they were loaded into cattle cars and taken to Auschwitz II- Birkeneu.

Selections were made as soon as the family was pulled from the train. There were no last hugs. No good-byes. As Rifcha's mother and her youngest siblings were being torn away and taken to their final death march, Rifcha's mother made her promise to take care of her sisters, to survive and to make sure she told the world of the atrocities of the Holocaust. At the gates of Auschwitz, Rifcha decided to become someone new. She gave herself a new name: Edita with the meaning: Spoils of war.

Over a million people, lost their lives in Auschwitz II - Birkenau, mostly in gas chambers; today, it is the world's largest Jewish graveyard. At the height of the selections, the murders would peak at 10,000 a day. This camp was home to Dr. Josef Mengele. This was where he did all of his medical experiments. There's something great about performing in a place where they don't expect to see you. They're appreciative. They say things like "thank you for coming to Hattiesburg" as much as they say "nice show". And almost every town has their version of a hipster coffee shop, so I can get in my comfort zone.

My original plan was to book one secondary market show in all 50 states in about a year, but that idea was funnier than anything in my act. So, instead of all 50 states in a year, my agent booked multiple shows in a lot of states, plus Israel and Canada.

Thank You for Coming to Hattiesburg is part tour diary, part travel guide, and part memoir. (Yes, memoir. Just like the thing presidents and former child stars get to write.) Follow me on my journey of small clubs and the occasional big amphitheater. Watch me make a promoter clean the dressing room toilet in Connecticut, see me stare at beached turtles in Maui, and see how I react when Lars from Metallica shows up to see me at a rec center in Northern California.

Fantastic book, fantastic comedian. Hope he does more books in the future. Very entertaining and well written.

Great read.

Good, quick read. It is a format that I assumed would be somewhat repetitive but I found the opposite to be true. It had a true feel of being "in on it" and behind the scene. Breaking the 4th wall. Most important...it was FUNNY!
