Boring

Narrator wont shut up. He just keeps talk and talkin, Thought this would be about Dick Winters

This one grows on you

'll start by saying that the material contains extended excerpts from interviews which made up Beyond Band of Brothers, so there is some repetition from the prior work. This book is also an opportunity for Col Kingseed to step out from behind the mask of Ghost writer, and show his relationship to the Major, and all that meant to him. This book is more of a tribute to a friend, and a reflection on friendship. I wouldn't choose this as my first book, if one were interested in Major Winters, his wartime experiences, or Easy Company, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, or World War II. Even to fully get the meaning behind this book, reading Beyond Band of Brothers, of Band of Brothers, or one of the many good books on the subject is a prerequisite. At first, I was overly aware of the repetition from the prior work, as more new material enters the narrative, and the various figures of the author, his teenage daughter, and others flesh out, the book definitely grows on you.

One of the top five books I've read on leadership in my life time. A must read for those that are in a leadership position.

High Marks All Round

Herbie Hancock tells his story with wisdom and wit. I learned a lot about both jazz and how to live a life.

I have long been drawn toward meditation and admiration of the Buddhist way of life. His embrace of this "religion" (I use quotes as I object to organized religion and consider myself an atheist) has guided him. In spite of the many obstacles in his way he has managed to live a pretty stress free life. He, and I, mostly attribute that phenomon to his attachment to a form of Buddhism.

However, there is another very important element here of which he is well aware: As a black kid growing up in Chicago's South side in the '40s, he was extraordinarily lucky to have had loving parents who were both willing and able to encourage him all along the way. He comes across across as a fun loving and very kind young man who is probably a genius of some sort. He is as nonjudgmental of others as he is critical of himself. He studies himself almost as tenaciously as he does the new music thresholds he is forever seeking out. His antennae are in constant motion. He is swept away over and over again by some new and extraordinary musical innovation. Way ahead of his time, or, as some think, just a sellout. I don't at all agree with that latter assessment. In any case, I haven't the "chops" to critique him or his detractors. I just found him eminently trustworthy, and someone we are lucky to have on this planet.

If I have one cavil it is this. THERE SHOUD BE SOME MUSIC The story is only frustrating in that the music he discusses (in exuberant and delicious detail) remains unheard. For example, when he tells of how he finally found the right chord for "Maiden Voyage", a major Hancock album and song, one longs to hear it then and there. I wonder if some music might have been added. It would show just what an "audiobook" can do. When reading one doesn't expect to "hear"; when "listening", one does.

However, that said, the writing and his reading of it are what you would expect from this concert pianist, science major, turned Jazz musician. His organization of the material is meticulous and his voice and delivery are just right.

While this is a great book, it could have been much shorter. Way too much repetition. Also, her family was horrible to her! I'm sure it had to be extremely difficult for them, but the comments they'd make to Sylvia were just cruel.

Sad But True

What made the experience of listening to Is There No Place on Earth for Me? the most enjoyable?

I found the author's understanding of the mental health system for young people in America very enlightening. I was amazed by the number of drugs tried by sufferers of mental illnesses and the fact that Drs. do not understand how the drugs effect each patient differently. This is an eye opening study of painful life one human who tried hard to fit in but could never please herself or others. She was a lost soul who kept searching for the cure to her diseased brain.

What did you like best about this story?

I like the fact that her sister stood by her through out her illness and tried to understand and love her in spite of her strange, childish, and often violent behavior.

I have listen to Kate Reading before and I think she is a very good reader. She did an outstanding job conveying the pain of the main character of this biographical study of a mentally ill young American.

Would you consider the audio edition of Wish You Happy Forever to be better than the print version?

I think so. Jenny Bowen reads this book herself, which - though unpolished - is a fine narration.

Jenny, many of the half the Sky volunteers, and all those both in America and China who helped with Half the Sky

This book is tragic, uplifting and inspirational. Jenny and her husband adopted two Chinese girls and took in others, as well as spearheaded a movement that impacts many children in institutionalized care.

it is hard to read in places, especially considering the malnutrition and lack of care due to immense overcrowding and poor training in Chinese orphanages.

I will read this book again. Well done!

Surprisingly good!

I was worried when this book started out as I was thinking it was just another book trying to capitalize on the reality show / Iron Chef craze. The beginning covers the Master Chef exam and was like that. So, initially I was turned off but then the author began to detail a chef, really getting into the person behind the title. He then covered another, the head chef of the French Laundry in Napa Valley. The horizon of cooking then just really began to open through masterful story development. It helps that Michael Ruhlman actually went to the CIA, took classes and has developed a real insight into the craft of cooking and chefs.

The narration was excellent, a good narrator really opens up a book as it should be.

I highly recommend this book.

Good Fun, Even if You Don't Cook!

I'm not a Kitchen Goddess, rather silly, actually (Seriously--I recently ordered Seared Ahi Tuna and discovered... that sucker's RAW!). But even I know about tension, failure, boisterous personalities, and the drive for perfection. "The Soul of a Chef" chronicles all that and then some.

We open to the enormous pressure to become a Certified Master Chef, follow with a wonderful chef who just makes you feel good, and end with the near perfection of The French Laundry (this latter part, by the way, was the only part I felt that made the book drag a bit).

Along the way is the devastation of having a PERFECT Duck Tureen that is OH NO! Spoiled by unfortunate knife skills. Humidity causing Crepe Crises! Overcooked pasta (Blasphemy! And: The delivery guy can wait... pasta can't)! Respecting food so much that you'll kill your own rabbits, thank you very much (Note: Rabbits scream).

And food combinations that'll have you scratching your head. Only dreamers and geniuses think like that, and God bless them, they're usually right.

Add to this an author whose own studies of cooking have him hungry (sorry, couldn't resist the pun) to seek out food, cooking, creatives, misery and you have a winner of a book. Especially since, when out with one of the most famous food critics, all he can think of is, "I've GOTTA remember to say that next time I'm out," you know you're in the hands of someone who can laugh at himself.

Except for the last part dragging a bit, it's a veritable love song to Thomas Keller, this is a fun book that'll have you cheering for the underdog, groaning when heat makes the shell of the creme brulee soft, and wishing that every chef, sous chef, line cook you know has such wonderful heart.

Fact is better than Fiction

Any additional comments?

My favorite thing about Sebastian Junger's book "The Perfect Storm" was that it wasn't fictionalized in any way, which can make the task of reconstructing the last few days of six men on a fishing vessel very difficult. But through a thoughtful examination of the events on and off of the Andrea Gail, Junger recreates the gripping story of what happened in late October 1991. It was known as the Perfect Storm - a freak meteorological marriage of two weather events that culminated in wave heights over 100 feet, sustained winds of 75mph, and over $200 million in damage along the eastern seaboard.

Great narration and an interesting, hair-raising story.

Riveting Book, Mediocre Narration

Would you try another book from Sebastian Junger and/or Richard Davidson?

I recommend other work by Sebastian Junger. I would have to take Davidson on a case by case basis.

What other book might you compare The Perfect Storm to and why?

In the Heart of the Sea for the historic background to Atlantic coastal fishing and as a compelling story in it's own right.

Would you be willing to try another one of Richard Davidsons performances?

Please do not prejudge the book if you have seen the movie. The two do not compare.

Great story, better than the movie

This is one of the few books I have listened to several times because it is so well researched and the narrator is excellent! Jungar did a great job with this story and it will always be one of the classic true stories.

Good if you are interested in ships and fishing

The Audible version has an interview with the author at the end where he talks about how this book started out as a chapter, then got turned into a magazine article and then into a 300 something page book. He mentioned the trouble of filling all these pages with the story and in order to do so expanded on several topics e.g. fishing history, oceanography, marine biology, hypothermia etc. And this is where I had troubles with the book. It's very well researched but it circles around a topic that I am just not that interested in.

My favorite book of all time!

This inspiring and remarkable story has so much to offer: wisdom, perspective, inspiration and wonder. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll be amazed. We listened to this story on the way to school every day, and my teenagers learned so much about their lives and the lives of refugees. I highly recommend this book to any parents who want their kids to grow up with an understanding of what it's like to be a refugee, and what it truly means to be an American.

Everyone needs to read this book!!!!! It is a must read! If you were at least a teenager in the 70's you remember the boat people but the story behind the headlines is so much more. The message at the end is SO IMPORTANT!

timely reminderthat we are our brothers keeper

This demonstrates that God's family and the church are still to care for the widow, the orphan and the alien. The Church is still the first and best resonse. Vinh Chung's powerful "parallel world" doesn't cast guilt, but the unfathomable will of the Lord and the Grace that binds humanity. This tale of the Vietnamese boat people and how they became Americans despite all obstacles, challenges us against the backdrop of those that did not make it. The challenge can be made today for those still trying to make it, as The Shepherd still seeks one lost sheep

raw truth

I am now a recovering addict but when I read this book(in jail) I was still a junkie and everything written in this book is the raw truth about addiction. This is a very good read!!!

I wish they were longer

this story definitely left you rooting for the protagonist. It's a shame that the story was as short as it was. but like all his books, this is definitely worth the read

A "Page Turner!" Excellent narration. Great voice changes. Story is as relavant today as it was in the 1970's.

Perfect.

Unapologetically vivid and brilliantly executed. Goines brings a horrifying glimpse into drug addiction that is both cringe worthy and intriguing. Kenerly's reading feels like a cast of a thousand actors. Excellence.

Classic!

A Beautiful Book

This is a book I will surely read many times. Beautiful writing, beautiful thoughts to ponder, and a beautiful love story. Inspiring in a literary sense as well as a spiritual sense. Everyone should read it who appreciates good literature. The audio version is very well done. Reader has a soothing voice.

A heart wrenching story of eternal love

I loves the descriptive detail of the author. The story conveys earthly and heavenly love as Van tracks upon a relationship with his true love.

Definitely one of my husband's and my favorites of all time

This book is both deep and romantic and both stay with you forever if you fully digest these beautiful words. A warning though: it takes some work on our part to ingest, to chew, and to swallow. It took listening to some parts over and over again. The insights into the person, C.S. Lewis were amazing. This is a must read for any of his fans. You will love him even more.

Superb narration makes for a fascinating Book

What an interesting book. The narration was superb and made the characters come alive. Amazing insights of one man's journey through profound love, developing faith as he handles his beloved wife's illness and subsequent death.
