    Excellent Material -
The authors contend that companies that historically sold premium offerings to drive profits can no longer rely on this tactic as the recession continues. Instead, they must provide cost-conscious buyers with more value. McKinsey and Boston Consulting studies show that around a third of companies in the top quartile of their industries fell during the 2000 slowdown, and only 105 clawed back five years later; meanwhile, 15% of today's market leaders jumped to the top during that recession.
Cost innovation methods include selling high-tech products at mass-market prices. Chinese battery maker BYD cut lithium-ion battery material and manufacturing costs so they became viable substitutes for lower-performance nickel-cadmium cells. It replaced the previously most expensive raw materials in lithium-ion cells with cheaper substitutes and learned to produce them at ambient temperature and humidity - eliminating the need for expensive "dry rooms." Costs fell from $40 to $12.
Low-cost Indian research centers helped Unilever develop an innovative inexpensive water-purification system that meets U.S. EPA criteria. And Finland-based Nokia dominates the low-end cell-phone market in China by offering phones costing as little as $8.
Indian pay phone personnel at pay phone company Micromax noticed people lining up in 2007 next to a man with a car battery strapped to the back of his bicycle - they were paying him to plug their cell phones in for a half hour's worth of charge because theire homes didn't have electricity. Micromax then came out with its first cell phone, cmoplete with oversized batter, small screen, and tweaked electronic that made it run as long as five days, and on standby for as many as 30. The phonex start at $40, and some allow users to play games on a console or have a full keyboard. It now has about 4% of the $6.4 billion Indian market. (BW, 8/12/2010)
To gain economies of scale, sell your offerings in places that have large niche markets - China's Goodbaby controls 80% of the Chinese stroller market and sells 1,600 kinds of strollers, children's car seats, etc. - 4X its rivals, but at comparable prices. One of its first strollers converted to a child's car seat, doing two jobs for the price of one.

Interesting tale of the man who invented the car.
Interesting story about the man who started the oldsmobile. To bad that GM got rid of it.
R.E.Olds: Local Geneva, Ohio boy makes good!
Interesting book written about automotive pioneer R.E.Olds (oldsmobile), although not thought of as the main catalys for the automobile, he was. This bio starts with his birth in Geneva, Ohio and carries through his success and near bankruptcy among the Giants of Motorcity, nice Kindle book

His story is in the mold of a Greek tragedy. Bruce Catton, Pulitzer-Prize-winning historian and journalist, once said, "In all the collection of strange tales that are told in Detroit, the automobile capital, there is no tale as strange as the tale of David Buick." Award-winning author and syndicated columnist Daniel Alef takes a good look at this strange and sorrowful tale.

    My opinion
    Coz what it talk about
I really enjoy read about this manufacture and also David Buick
I like the title but, I feel sad when they didn't know a lot about David Buick.
I dislike when the book kind of small
To everyone who care or want to know about BUICK
Here is a short book for buick lovers
Here is an interesting book about the early birth of the Buick brand. The books starts describing the early and largely forgotton history of Buick. If you are a lover of all things Buick this is for you
BEWARE 5 PAGE ARTICLE NOT A BOOK
This is a five page article not the advertised "book" on the kindle site . Its just a few bucks, but Amazon is ripping people off advertising this as an ebook.
    Well-Written and Interesting
This biographical profile is one in a series of the great American automobile pioneers written by Daniel Alef. I've read a number of them. The Buick story is short, concise, and very well-written. Another reviewer pointed out that this is not a book. It specifically says it is a biographical profile and specifies its length. And the length for me is perfect--long enough for me to get a good sense of who David Buick was, how he succeeded, and how miserably he failed. Kudos to the author. If I want to learn more about Buick I'll buy a full biography, but then I'll have to spend a lot more, too.

    Publisher's Summary:
In essence Charles and Frank were the incubators of one of America's greatest industries - automobiles. However, their success was marred by disputes and tainted with failures. The Duryeas could not agree which one of them was entitled to the most recognition for their discoveries or achievements. Although they were competent engineers, with vision and determination, they were unable to adapt their vision to public taste, placing the engine in the rear and retaining a tiller for steering and speed. Award-winning author and syndicated columnist Daniel Alef tells their fascinating story of ups, downs and achievements.
    Members Reviews:
    informative. lacks flair
The book has an interesting and informative chronological recounting of facts. Sometimes facts are thrown in for seemingly no reason other than that they were known. It could easily have been developed into a more entertaining story. But, in the end, it does a decent job of conveying information.

    Publisher's Summary:
The Duesenberg name evokes images of a European heritage, an automobile built in the image and traditions of iconic stalwarts such as Mercedes, Benz, Bugatti and Ferrari. But the European heritage is an illusion. Their cars were born in Iowa! Duesenbergs were sought by royalty movie stars, and industrial tycoons, from Gary Cooper and Clark Gable to W.R. Hearst, the Duke of Windsor and William Wrigley, Jr. The story of the boys from Iowa and their meteoric rise to creating the greatest American car is a fascinating adventure in the American dream.

    Don't waste the time
This is a ripoff. I see magazine articles longer and better written that this everyday. Author could not have spent more than 15 minutes on this trash.
Fred and Augie Duesenberg made America's Greatest Car
Fred and Augie Duesenberg: made America's Greatest Car is about two giants in the early automotive industry. Along with other titles in this series there is much in management style thinking and expertise that today's executives, managers and business people of all sorts can learn. I'm a firm believer that learners and practitioners of management can learn much more from reading men and women of this accomplishment. I would also suggest Alfred Sloan, Mary Parker Follet, Bill Knudson, etc. Also read the works of the busines/management theorists in the orginial , rather than in the textbook version. What a difference............ Geoffrey Laendner
    Too short
This book was well written but lacked any detail of the complete Duesenberg history. I think that a lot of information readily available, should have been included.
    comment
I8 feel this series of books although very well researched could have a few more pages & some pictures for the price asked
