    Publisher's Summary:
Many of the patients at Mother of Mercy walk for days in order to arrive at the hospital's gates. Others are carried by friends, or survive the jarring ride over dirt paths in the back of the rare pickup that exists in the Nuba Mountain region of southern Sudan. Most are victims of the war that has been waged from the air against the people of Nuba by the Sudanese government for years. All Nubans know to seek refuge in a foxhole when they hear the drone of the bombers overhead; and they all know, in the aftermath, is to bring the maimed to Dr. Tom Catena, the only surgeon for thousands of square miles.
Dr. Tom, as he's known throughout Nuba, has lived at the hospital for seven years. Aside from the walk that he makes each morning to a small chapel, he rarely leaves Mother of Mercy. He spends his days amputating limbs, sewing up wounds, and saving lives that would surely have no chance of being saved if it weren't for Catena and the Nuban staff that, with no formal education, have learned to treat the horrors that come through their doors every day.

    Five Stars
    Excellent book.
This would be a good book for a reading circle
There is nothing ethereal about Dr Tom. He is the gruff, occasionally profane and totally dedicated single physician in the Nuba region of Sudan, where a nasty genocidal war is being waged against the Nuban people. James Verini reveals a story not covered on the evening news in sharp clear prose. This would be a good book for a reading circle, spiritual study group or international issues students. Warning: graphic depictions of war inflicted injuries.
    Stand out physician!
The complete story of his life was very compelling for my enjoyment of the book. Not many others with his background would have made the life choices that he did.

    Publisher's Summary:
Harlow Shapley was an astronomer, humanitarian, and public figure in his day. Born in the hills of the Ozarks in Missouri, he went on to become the director of the Harvard College Observatory and discovered our place in the galaxy.
Because of the painstaking work of this tireless American astronomer, we were given a clearer picture of our place in the universe. Shapley was a prodigious astronomer who completed significant work on globular clusters, Cepheid variables, as well as key aspects of cosmology and stellar astronomy, including nebular and stellar spectroscopy and photometry.
Shapley also did important work on the Magellanic Clouds, which are neighbor galaxies to our own Milky Way. He made the deduction that the Sun is located at the central plane of the galaxy on a minor arm of the Milky Way about 30,000 light years from the galactic center. This was in direct conflict with the prevailing view of the galaxy and caused quite a stir in the astronomical community.
At the peak of his career as an astronomer, he worked at the Mt. Wilson Observatory and afterward served at the helm of the Harvard College Observatory, eventually transforming it into an important training and observational facility. Shapley was to lead the development of the Harvard Astronomy program, which produced many prominent astronomers.
Shapley's work on international issues in astronomy lead him to multiple visits to Russia. This was at the early stages of the Cold War between the United States and Russia. Harlow Shapley had caught the eye of the FBI and the famed communist hunter Joseph McCarthy, and he was investigated by the Committee of Un-American activities.
Shapley was later cleared of any wrong doing, but it almost cost him the directorship of the Harvard College Observatory. Shapley became a prodigious writer for the general public so they could understand and appreciate the wonders of the universe.

    Riepilogo Editore:

    Publisher's Summary:
The amazing story of one man's obsession with an enigmatic and deadly reptile. Raymond Ditmars (1876-1942), the first curator of reptiles at New York's famous Bronx Zoo, brought cold-blooded animals to public attention as never before. Through wildly successful books and movies, he inspired a generation of zoologists with his fascination for snakes, insects, and other misunderstood creatures. Ditmars was among the most celebrated naturalists in America. His reptile-collecting trips for the zoo spawned newspaper headlines across the world. Although a serpent lover, he was all too aware of the devastating effects of snakebites and was instrumental in the development of antivenin. His films and writings brought him fame, but he remained a devoted zoo employee, doing what he loved most: caring for animals.
Bushmaster tells the story of this remarkable man and what became an obsession with the mysterious bushmaster of the South American rainforest. Measuring up to 13 feet in length, this is the world's largest viper, and its scientific name, Lachesis muta, translates as "silent fate." Despite numerous expeditions to jungles from Honduras to Brazil, Ditmars could never capture a bushmaster for himself. Now, British author Dan Eatherley follows in Ditmars's footsteps, revisiting his early haunts in the United States and South America. He attempts to do what Ditmars himself failed to achieve: to find a bushmaster in the wild. But 80 years later, will Dan have any more luck? Through the author's own quest, Bushmaster reveals the life of a pioneer herpetologist, wildlife filmmaker, and zoo curator.

Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Science & Technology Leaders
    Publisher's Summary:
Despite Freud primarily regarding himself as a scientist, his definition of science somewhat varies from the traditional notions of modern psychologists. Freud's reliance is increasingly on deductive reasoning as opposed to rigorous methods of research, and his observations are subjective, corresponding to a relatively minimal sample of patients mostly comprising the upper and upper-middle classes. Freud does not make observations under controlled conditions, nor does he quantify his data. Freud almost exclusively makes use of the case-study approach, formulating his hypotheses after the facts of a case become apparent.
    Members Reviews:
    Awful
The narration sounds like a computer reading. It is so bad it is almost impossible to listen and actually absorb what is being said. To make matters worse the content is equally terrible. At some points it sounds like a list of random (sometimes irrelevant) facts rather than any sort of attempt at sharing organized relayed ideas. I rarely write reviews and I regularly listen audible books but I felt obligated to warn others - all of these "books" read and written my Steven Carley are really worthless.
This is incredibly boring and dull to listen to
If this book wasnt for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?
Carley wrote and spoke this text - in EVERY sense incredibly dull and bring as he uses extremely short sentences and always the same sentence structure - the information given is very tainted by the authors own feelings and views - totally not useful!
Has Sigmund Freud's Psychoanalytic Theory put you off other books in this genre?
no - it only put me off this author!
Would you be willing to try another one of Steven G Carley MSs performances?
    never

Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Science & Technology Leaders
    Publisher's Summary:
The first full-length biography of George Ingle Finch - maverick Australian mountaineer, scientist, concert pianist and father of actor Peter Finch.
George Ingle Finch, mountaineer, soldier, scientist, rebellious spirit, boy from the bush, was in his day one of the most famous men in the world.
In 1922 he stood at the highest point on Everest, a feat not bettered for 30 years. He invented the predecessor to the puffer jacket and pioneered the use of oxygen in climbing. A World War I hero whose skills also helped save London from burning to the ground during the Blitz of World War II, he was a renowned scientist who was personally chosen by Nehru, the first Indian prime minister, to help lead his nation into the modern world.
With a private life torn by war and misguided by social norms, a reputation as an outsider among the British alpine climbing establishment, and some rough and ready 'colonial' habits, Finch was a brilliantly colourful character - so why has he vanished from the pages of history?
In this first full-length biography, Robert Wainwright surveys the man who is now best known as the father of Academy Award-winning actor Peter Finch - but who was so much more.

Amazing Australian Adventurer - The Story of George Finch, Father of Actor Peter Finch
This is a marvellous book. George Finch was a mountaineer, scientist and war hero, and Robert Wainwright covers all aspects of his life, keeping you interested to the last page. His achievements, inventions and discoveries, not to mention his awards, were seemingly endless. I cannot believe I had never heard of the man before. A "must read"
    Unexpected pleasures
I know nothing of mountaineering, nor had I heard of George Finch, but after reading this book I wished I had done more to find out about both when I was young.
    Biography at it's best.
Exhaustively researched, and beautifully expressed, objective and truthful, not putting a slant on things. Saved a remarkable man and his contributions from oblivion.
    Excellent
A really well written and interesting piece of history that needed to be told. What an amazing account of this truly remarkable man.
Great book to complement "Into the Silence
Great book to complement "Into the Silence: The Great War, Mallory, and the Conquest of Everest" by Wade Davis. Shows the multi-dimensionality of Finch beyond mountaineering.
