  • A Perfect Mess Audiobook by Eric Abrahamson, David H. Freedman

    Title: A Perfect Mess
Subtitle: The Hidden Benefits of Disorder
Author: Eric Abrahamson, David H. Freedman
    Narrator: David H. Freedman
    Format: Abridged
Length: 3 hrs and 9 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-20-06
    Publisher: Hachette Audio
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 12 votes
    Genres: Business, Career Skills
    Publisher's Summary:
With a spectacular array of true stories and case studies of the hidden benefits of mess, A Perfect Mess overturns the accepted wisdom that tight schedules, organization, neatness, and consistency are the keys to success. Drawing on examples from business, parenting, cooking, the war on terrorism, retail, and even the career of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Abrahamson and Freedman demonstrate that moderately messy systems use resources more efficiently, yield better solutions, and are harder to break than neat ones.
Applying this idea on scales both large (government, society) and small (desktops, garages), A Perfect Mess uncovers the ways messiness can trump neatness, and will help you assess the right amount of disorder for any system.
    Critic Reviews:
"The advice is good and the arguments intriguing." (Publishers Weekly)
"Flying utterly in the face of conventional wisdom, the authors turn the world of organization on its head to examine how messy systems can be more effective than highly organized ones." (Booklist)
    Members Reviews:
    Just "OK" book
The beginning of the book was very interesting, but after a while the "mess is good" message got a little old. Towards the end of the book I felt there simply was not enough material to write this book. Maybe this book should have been a long magazine article instead. Also, some of the material presented in the book was based on limited research. For example: How can you say that Microsoft is doing better than Apple, because Microsoft is "messy" and Apple is "neat"? There is no proof of this anywhere to be found. The success of Microsoft and Apple depend much more on the particular time in history than on their messiness/neatness.
In short: Don't buy. Go to a bookstore and read the first part of the book, rest is a repeat.
The first book you should read if you are an imperfect organizer.
By profession I am a Professional Organizer, but hidden inside of me is a totally disorganized person who struggles every day with the chaos and disorder in my life. I've read many of the "get organized" books, but was frustrated by my inability to follow through with the sense of perfection they required. "A Perfect Mess..." is a refreshing change. It was extremely helpful with organizational ideas, but it allowed me to be less than perfect. It is full of shortcuts that allowed me to achieve my goals but drop my idealistic methods. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who is tired of the "how to" books on organization and would like to read a book written by someone who really understands.
For a measly $16 purchase, the benefits are priceless
Measured in conventional ways, this book can be -- like mess itself --a bit frustrating: as several other Amazon reviewers have noted, it ends unsatisfyingly abruptly after wandering in desultory fashion through seemingly endless anecdotes that, for the most part, have little to do with the messy-desk or messy-home problem that most of us expected to be reading about. The essential purpose of this book, though, is to free you from the chokehold of normative concepts about neatness and organization.

    Genres: Business, Career Skills
    Publisher's Summary:
If you're not doing seminars to promote your business product or service, you should be. These tools offer shortcuts to seminar success that will save you countless hours of work, frustration, and mistakes.
    Members Reviews:
    Disappointed
This book is WAY too basic. In an effort to provide a step by step approach to setting up and delivering seminars, the author patronizes even beginners in the field. There are also no tips or ideas on how to present the seminars after you've created one. Lots of info on marketing but pretty much common sense stuff that you could get over a cup of coffee with a friend or your mother!
    Hmm...not the best investment
After listening to the program, I felt that some, although not a majority, of the 33 steps required you to have another one of the author's products.
I contacted the author who replied very promptly with a lengthy explanation as to how I was mistaken.
If you choose to purchase this product it would be best to have the CD ROM containing the forms he repeatedly refers to while listening as well as his book.
For me, the issue is not whether an author recommends other resources. It is important that the product is complete in and of itself. The author thinks it does, I frankly feel that it does not.
He seems sincerely interested in helping people develop the proper mind set and action steps to deliver profitable seminars. It is recommended for a very remedial understanding of seminar production.
My time and book credit wasted
Basic is an understatement - an insult to the intelligence of those of us who may have information to share in seminar format. Some 'chapters' useless unless you have purchased his other books and CD Roms, which I would not waste the money on. I certainly wouldn't pay to sit through one of his seminars based on the 'usefulness' of this book.
I thought there just may be some good points to be gained - just disappointing

    Title: The Winner's Way
    Author: Pamela Brill
    Narrator: Bernadette Dunne
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 4 hrs and 14 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-06-06
    Publisher: McGraw-Hill Education
Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 8 votes
    Genres: Business, Career Skills
    Publisher's Summary:
The Winner's Way offers readers a proven, user-friendly method to identify, engage, and drive strategic change for continual achievement in the face of never-ending challenge. That racing heart and those white knuckles? They're the result of the chemical deluge that ramps activation to high speed, but without proper 3A alignment, this power within can derail attention and attitude. Tunnel vision is no accident. Negative beliefs about self and potential will always get in the way. Plagued instead by listlessness, wandering attention, an apathetic attitude? These are all due to another chemical reaction, with symptoms readers learn to identify and then re-ramp to their best strengths. Throughout The Winner's Way, Dr. Brill provides example after example so listeners can adapt, according to their personal make-up, the steps to winning achievement that become second nature.
    Members Reviews:
Your Personal Best In The Present Moment
Dr. Pam Brill's, "The Winner's Way" is an engaging book that facilitates living fully in the present moment. By fully, the author means incorporating her "3A's" into one's life to respond to stimuli (challenges, big or small): Activation (at any moment, your physical and physiological experience); Attention (the focus of your concentration); and, Attitude (one's psychological stance, which includes your outlook, beliefs, assumptions about the way things are or should be). By using your will, the author describes a methodology that aligns the 3A's and provides you with your best opportunity to excel with challenges in the present moment.
As an individual addresses any stimuli or challenges of the moment (phone call; tennis match; children's breakfast; staff meeting; etc.), you can utilize the "3 small a's" (awareness, assessment and adjustment) to optimize your 3A's in what Dr. Brill describes as your "arc of engagement." If you follow her methodology, you will adjust your "3A's" in the present, to the place where athletes describe themselves as being "in the zone," when they are at their peak of effort (one's personal "arc of engagement").
The author spends some time discussing brain chemistry; how stimuli produces certain chemical reactions in our brains -- the effects of which we are familiar -- and the process described is very interesting (I enjoyed somewhat of an "aha!" experience while reading this section of the book).
Dr. Brill then describes what she calls "The Winner's Way Attentional Style," four attentional styles in which each quadrant describes aspects of personalities with which we interact on a daily basis. By identifying attentional styles, you can optimize your ability to respond to challenges posed by individuals with these personality styles.
"The Winner's Way" is a methodology that is easy to adapt to address life's stimuli -- challenges large and small -- on a daily basis, and do so in an optimal manner in the present moment. Highly recommended.
Pam Brill's book is great !
Pam Brill's new book is a great addition to the available knowledge about being "in the zone."
Being "in the zone" brings increased performance in most any field. You know when you're in the zone... and when you are not.

  • Bang! Audiobook by Linda Kaplan Thayer, Robin Koval

    Title: Bang!
Subtitle: Getting Your Message Heard in a Noisy World
Author: Linda Kaplan Thayer, Robin Koval
    Narrator: Deborah Marlowe
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 8 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-17-03
    Publisher: Random House Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 119 votes
    Genres: Business, Career Skills
    Publisher's Summary:
We all want to have our message heard. In Bang! Linda Kaplan Thaler and Robin Koval tell us how. They and their talented colleagues are the brains behind a host of memorable and highly successful ads, from the enormously successful AFLAC duck to the irresistibly sentimental "Kodak moment" to Herbal Essences' outrageous "Totally Organic Experience." Kaplan Thaler and Koval offer savvy advice and proven strategies for getting out a loud, clear, attention-grabbing message about any product or service.
Presenting an arsenal of "big bang" ideas, the authors interweave entertaining recollections about their successes and failures, as well as those of other companies, with specific guidelines on establishing an atmosphere conducive to innovative breakthroughs. They show why having "enough" time to work on a project can be a disadvantage and why working in a small, cramped space is often the best way to come up with big ideas. Their insights into using intuition to capture just the right idea or phrase offer a new perspective on shaping and sustaining a marketing presence.
Full of colorful anecdotes and inspiring accounts of campaigns that have propelled revenues and dramatically increased market shares, Bang! shows managers how to create a marketing campaign that cuts through the message clutter and creates a marketing explosion.
    Critic Reviews:
"Although the author's advice is targeted primarily toward businesses and other publicists, the glitzy anecdotal writing is witty and informative enough to appeal to those interested in advertising and popular culture." (Publishers Weekly)
"If Al Gore had had this book in 2000, George W. Bush wouldn't be sitting in the White House." (James Carville, author and Democratic strategist)
"Linda Kaplan Thaler and Robin Koval 'get it' from every angle. This [audio] book is full of extraordinary insight on effective message delivery." (Gordon Bethune, Chairman and CEO, Continental Airlines)
    Members Reviews:
    What a disappointment!
After seeing a rating of 4.3 stars on Audible.com, I happily downloaded the book expecting a treat. What a disappointement! I've been an Audible subscriber for some time now, and this has been the first book I haven't finished. I got about one quarter of the way through and deleted it.
Pros: Some good stories and ideas (but nothing that you couldn't find in any other marketing book of higher quality).
Cons: As another reviewer suggested, the author merely gives examples of successful ads and tries to explain how they worked because they went against the grain and got a lot of attention. Well, I could have told you that! The real problem lies in the author's conclusions. The underlying theme seems to be: "Do the opposite of whatever you think will work best." If you think an ad is tasteless, inappropriate, and irrelevant, then run it because it will be a great success. If the ad has nothing whatsoever to do with the product, then it is more likely to succeed. For example, one of her "bright" ideas is: "You must forget about what makes sense...illogical thinking means that when you're asked to promote a bottle of water, you realize that water is the last thing you should focus on."
Conclusion: I give this book a rating of 1.5 stars.

    Just not for me.
I was looking for concrete examples to help me find a compatible job. This book proposes visualization, affirmations, meditations, such as repeating, "the god in me sees the god in you", to help you to align your inner values with your outer goals "to move on to your vocational trajectory. Relax. Breathe in, breathe out. Feel your ability to receive all the things that you really want." (Quote, unquote).
I did not connect with it at all. I was looking for best ways to hunt for a job, directions to resources to determine your ideal job, etec. I got none of this from this book. I can't see how this book would help me find the perfect job. I'm not against meditation, this just wasn't what I was looking for.
    Useless
Don't bother. This talk has no real insights or tips that aren't in every single career site out there.

What did you love best about The Beginner's Guide to Finding Your Perfect Job?
Rather than business and economic guidelines, this book focuses on the human and spiritual factor. Our personality, our passion, our family background should guide us to our job. In fact, we shouldn't be looking for the perfect job: we're it!
What did you like best about this story?
What I loved the most was the definition of abundance:
Which character as performed by Rick Jarow was your favorite?
God or Allah or Buddha or the Supreme Conscience, or anything that you consider greater than man is a key-character in this book.
What did you learn from The Beginner's Guide to Finding Your Perfect Job that you would use in your daily life?
Abundance is not something to achieve. It's already there for me to grasp. I am unique. There is a place that needs me, a place where I need to be: that's where the perfect job is. In fact, I
    Any additional comments?
The only one thing that didn't work for me in this book was the autosuggestion and the motivational affirmations. I guess I'm too aware of that stuff for it to affect me. But this book is worth reading, it takes the desperation out of your job search. It makes you trust yourself.
    Guided Spiritual Career Counseling
I love this audiobook and Rick Jarow's approach to discovering your perfect vocation. This program is for those who would like support/coaching in listening to your own inner guidance about your right and perfect life path expression (aka career). If you are looking for an analytical, logical or scientific approach to finding a career this is not for you. This program is very "right brained". It will tap into creativity & possess questions while providing few or no answers. I love the he leaves it up to me to find or just choose my own answers. It is my life & my responsibility. If you are open to quieting yourself trusting your gut & intuition this is the PERFECT tool for you.

    Meandering narrative with audio issues
Midway through, the audio quality changes significantly; the voice becomes quieter and there's a kind of audio "hiss" behind every syllable, and initially this is very annoying. This issue would be forgivable if the content were better, but the book itself was disappointing. He has five main points (number one: Care, but not too much) but beyond that structure, the text is disorganized and meandering. I expected a one-hour listen to be concise, but if this were concise, the content might only have lasted fifteen minutes. Get "Negotiate Smart" instead.
    very poor too many repeats
Nothing we dont know. It was same things over and over
