Bad story topped by worse narrator

I am a big Dickens fan, and I was thrilled to find some new works.

After listening, I'm pretty sure Dickens himself didn't boast about this one. The story did have some amusing descriptions of the house and the 12 or so residents who come to investigate the haunting for Christmas. The houseguests promise to say nothing of anything they observe in the supernatural realm until the 12th night of Christmas.

The narrator describes some scary things he's observed, then tells us about a dream he had of the time when he was a schoolboy.

The end.

The big gathering in which all the strange tales were to be told never happens.

This was a really, really bad story by anyone, let alone Dickens.

The narrator seems to be some random guy with no vocal talent who heard that there was money to be made recording books. It was obviously recorded long, long ago. possibly in a galaxy far, far away, since the audio quality is not good. Every now and then the narrator says "TAPE TWO" or "TAPE THREE".

I think this thing cost me $1 on sale.

I was robbed.

Great present for grandfather

I bought this book for my father who has just retired. It is a touching book with beautiful illustrations. My daughter enjoyed it but I think that it is a children's book that an adult would appreciate more than a child. If you are looking for a touching book to give your father-grandfather I would recomend this book.

Awful narration

The book is unlistenable as the narrator has unnaturally emphasized and placed inflection, expressing surprise at the end and even in the middle of every sentence.

The stories are classics but hard to evaluate given the distracting reading.

Can't listen to this!

At first I couldn't figure out what this narrator was trying to do with her unbearably singsong voice, then I did some research and realise she is reading for children - her delivery is beyond annoying and I can't listen to her. I really urge you to listen to a sample before you spend money on this oddity! I couldn't get past the second story and am very annoyed, I really wanted to hear these short stories - shame on you Audible for not explaining this is a childrens' book and shame on me for not listening to a sample first!

Awful narrator!

Only managed a few paragraphs. The narrator's voice is dreadful. Great stories I'm sure but I really couldn't get past the way the narrator dragged out the end of every phrase.

Really irritatating narration

The narrators performance completely gets in the way of the stories. I tried for an hour but couldn't cope for any longer. Maybe it's just me, but listen to the clip before you consider buying. A shame, because I was looking forward to some classic short stories.
