Short book for Big Book price

I had no idea that this book was only 45 pages long until I received it. Based on the price, I expected a 200 to 300 Page book. Obviously I did not read the details of the book, but it is going to be returned, and I do not understand how they can justify a full book price for a book so short that they don't even number the pages.

I was always aware of the depression, being born in1936. But, the 20s were the formative years of their youth and early marriage.

Great book!

As always the hourly history series is great, this book being no exception. They are fantastic for exposing yourself to a subject, with a surprising amount of detail given the length, before you decide if you want to get into the subject further.

Excellent short history of D Day. If the brave hero's of that day would have failed, we would all be speaking German right now. Thank God for those hero's.

Great intro but not at all something that leaves you smarter than before....

Did not realize that this was a 'short', concise, abridged, abbreviated, hourly and it took two of them to complete book. Fine it you know nothing about but hardly a definitive tome.

This is a well researched book with some very important first hand accounts spread though out. Some interesting maps. While it primarily discusses the European Allies it does cover the American contributions. Very balanced accounts. Briefly discusses the German strategy and the Allied response mostly from the British side. But it contains great information on the last months of the war.

Neglects the role of the naval mutiny in ending WWI. Tho accurate in other respects.

A must read

Michlin's first hand account of the atrocities of Auschwitz, after his families pleas to the French authorities were ignored, is a must read for anyone wanting to know what Jewish citizens faced in 1940's France. After surviving the holocaust Michlin learned more about the French government's cooperation with the Nazis. America's anti-Semitic immigration policies of the 1930's also played a role in preventing his families survival.

Mr. Michlin tells his story well, documenting the tragic events of his and other French citizens fate as they faced the atrocities of life and death in Auschwitz alongside other tormented Jews.

My mother-in-law is a distant cousin of Mr. Michlin and remembers his arrival in Detroit after the war. This book has been passed through our family so that we never forget those who did not survive.

Additional Family History

Gilbert Michlin is a distant relative. This book sheds added information for my family history. Most interesting is the mention of my Uncle by name who helped Gilbert along his way.

Important and moving

While the author is clearly not a writer by profession, this book is very readable and moving. Even more important is the information given about a dreadful period in human history.

Heartwrenching Story...

This story kept me along the journey with the storyteller from his time in France until the time he is released. When he returns home to France his neighbors act as if nothing has ever happened. No wonder he left and went elsewhere.

Oh so many blunders! Which censors count?

Embedding reporters into military actions may not work out well and which censors should the news media report their work? Stanley Johnston and the Chicago Tribune sure stirred up the naval censors, Washington bureaucrats, FDR, and more in 1942. Elliot Carson masterfully tells the story of all of the people associated with the case of Stanley Johnston's time aboard the USS Lexington through the Battle of the Coral Sea, arrival back to the states and connecting with the home office of the Chicago Tribune with the tale of the battle. Little did the senior editor understand that the navy had separate censors from the bureaucrats in DC and that editorial license would land the reporter, the editor, and newspaper, and everyone associated with the ships and code breakers in hot water.

The grand jury inquiry, FBI, navy, and other records are woven into this story so well that people should wonder why this little scandal is not known today. Epilogues to stories like this one are so much fun to hear.

Take a listen. One might see some comparisons with situations from more current news items that involve military or national security.

'An armor officer with a doctorate in history, Nance throws fresh light on a very neglected branch of the U.S. Army in World War II, the cavalry. He opens with a review of the history of mounted troops in the Army and the transition from horses to motors, finding the traditionalists perhaps not so hidebound as is often depicted. Nance then looks at cavalry operations from Normandy through the fall of the Reich. Not only did the cavalry seek out the enemy or cover retirements, but it also shielded the flanks of friendly units moving deep into hostile territory and, despite the neat lines drawn on maps that suggest firmly held lines, frequently broad swathes of the front were only covered by small numbers of very active troopers, who had to cope with an uncertain doctrine and inadequate equipment. Yet, having done its work so well, the cavalry has only rarely found mention in most accounts of operations in northwestern Europe.
