Publisher's Summary:
Philosophy for busy people. Listen to a succinct account of the philosophy of Hegel in just one hour.
With Hegel philosophy became very difficult indeed even the great man himself conceded that only one man understands me, and even he does not. His dialectical method produced the most grandiose metaphysical system known to humanity, and included absolutely everything, its most vital element being the dialectic of the thesis, antithesis and synthesis. This method arose from Hegels ambition to overcome the deficiencies of logic and ascend towards Mind as the ultimate reality. His view of history as a process of humanitys self-realisation ultimately inspired Marx to synthesise his philosophy of dialectical materialism.
This audiobook is an expert account of Hegels life and philosophical ideas entertainingly written and is easy to listen to. Also included are selections from Hegels work, suggested further reading, and chronologies that place Hegel in the context of the broader scheme of philosophy.
Critic Reviews:
Well-written, clear and informed, they have a breezy wit about them . . .I find them hard to stop reading. (New York Times)
Witty, illuminating, and blessedly concise (Wall Street Journal)
Each of these little books is witty and dramatic and creates a sense of time, place, and character . . . I cannot think of a better way to introduce oneself and one's friends to Western civilization. (Boston Globe)
A godsend in this era of the short attention span. (New York Times)
Members Reviews:
For Beginners Only
This book delivers on its promise since it can easily be read in an hour.
It also gives a decent picture of Hegel the man, along with the rudiments of Hegel's thought.
Unfortunately, it goes off the rails by ridiculing Hegel's (admittedly) difficult prose style.
Whatever one thinks of Hegel's philosophy, he was hugely influential on 19th- and 20th-Century
thought and politics. His theory of dialectics (crudely summarized by the phrase "Thesis, Antithesis, Synthesis")
and his views on history can be found at work in fields as diverse as biblical criticism and Soviet Marxism.
So, read this book to get your bearings, then read a more detailed and respectful treatment. This reviewer
recommends Frederic Copleston as a trustworthy guide through the history of philosophy.

I have degrees in philosophy and did my Senior Thesis on Hegel. This is not an accurate coverage of his philosophy and does not reflect Hegel's depth. Even given the short treatment format, it is misleading in many ways.
Author doesn't seem to like Hagel
It's an interesting read because the author seems to think Hagel is a terrible blovator. You learn what a scholar of philosophy dislikes in Hagel but Hagel's substance ( unless there is very little ) one only gets a sense of

This short book is an excellent biography of Hegel but felt it fails to do justice his ideas. I felt it doesn't capture Hegel's ideas about history that well.
