This is a very good business start up overview. Good real life case studies. Keeps start up concept simple; probably more aligned to the home based entrepreneur but it is a sound and valid listen.

Poor, Descriptions are Too Brief

I have read 100's of success book across the years, as you will see from my other reviews. This book has to be one of the worst I have read.

Each idea is given a quote or two and a brief description about the idea. Very often what Adair gives you is a common-sense idea without very much description on how to achieve it. It reads more like a check list of good ideas than a substantial read on how to achieve success. For me here is the problem. To achieve success most readers will already know most of the 100 ideas, what they may lack are the strategies for achieving these ideas. This book is not a strategy book. The descriptions don't really tell you "How To" achieve anything.

The best book I have read recently is John Maxwell's Road Map to Success. If you are looking at a "How To" type of success book, my advice is buy this book by Maxwell. Adair's book has its uses, if all you want is a brief list of things you should be doing. If you require information on how to achieve greater success buy another book such as the Roadmap to Success, it will be money better spent. Based upon this book, I would not even consider buying another book in the series.

Not recommended for the more serious student of self help and success.

100 Greatest Ideas for Personal Success

In `100 Greatest Ideas for Personal Success' John Adair gives us another slice of his business/leadership ideas in an easily digested format.

This is divided up into five parts, each with numerous chapters that cover the topics explored. This looks at ideas to find your vocation in life, how to get on with people, success qualities, ideas for time management and planning, leadership skills, communication skills (including how to run an effective meeting), thinking skills and more besides.

Most ideas include an inspirational quote, idea or excerpt from a well known leader, businessman or expert in their field. It also has regular follow up tests so you can see how well you are absorbing the ideas on offer.

John Adair is highly respected in his field and having read other books by him I can say this one is just as interesting and engaging. It has plenty of ideas you can implement immediately and others you can work on over a longer period to improve your day to day business and personal relationships.

This is good to read from cover to cover or to dip into at odd moments and you could easily leave this on your desk to browse through when you need a boost or quick word of inspiration.

Overall this is a very good business book that has plenty to offer those who want to go the extra mile and work their way up the ladder of success, whatever the word success may mean to you.

I think, as a woman who holds her master of science and is already pursuing her doctorate, I'm out of the target demographic. The importance of networking, ways of making your research verbally acceptable to non-scientists, and how to make a powerpoint aren't lessons I need. Perhaps if you are male, introverted, and in your senior year of undergrad, some of this will be new for you.

If you're thinking of a doctorate, LISTEN TO THIS!

Would you listen to A Ph.D. Is Not Enough! again? Why?

YES, the details pertaining to career planning and presentation issues are worth it. True, not everything espoused here applies to all disciplines equally, but most of it does.

If you are thinking or pursuing a doctorate, it's worth listening.

If you are currently going through a doctorate program, it's worth listening.

If you are science or engineering doctor and trying to decide whether to stay in academia or jump into industry, it's worth listening, but keep in mind the advice given here is not necessarily universally applicable.

That said, two out of three ain't bad.

What did you like best about this story?

This book is great as far as a guide for pursuing a doctorate in the sciences or engineering. It is also great as far as planning your career after you have reached this goal. As a person pursuing a PhD in marketing a great deal of this advice is confirmed by others sources and my advisors.

What does Peter J. Feibelman bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

Okay, the author is not on the level of a Simon Jones or Edward Hermann, but his delivery actually adds to the credibility of the piece. You know you are hearing the truth straight from the source. Plus, by the author reading it, you really gain insight into what is important to him, through his use of tonal emphasis and pauses.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

This is not a one-sitting book. If it was that short then it really would not even come close to covering the subject. However, even if it were that short, the material actually lends itself to stopping and really contemplating what has been said. This is important stuff.

Didn't like it

First, the book: it must be the most overrated book in the history of mankind!! I didn't read it before and was really excited but was kind of let down.

And , the narrator: it was as if she is trying to put me to sleep.

A wonderful new version of a classic

This my new favorite version of "The Art of War." Escalona's understated narration feels like a perfect match to the subtleties of Sun Tzu's masterpiece, a tone that I think is typically beyond the range of most American narrators. Given the length (a little more than two hours) and the quality, you might just want to find a comfortable chair near the fire, close your eyes, and listen all the way through in one sitting.
