Listening to Music and Playback Sources in 2021

Tony: Hello and welcome to The Three Techs. I’m your host, Tony Tang. And I’m joined by the other two texts this evening. Bob Fairbairn. Hey

Tony: Bob

Bob: Good evening.

Tony: and Steven Bramson. Hey, Steven.

Steven: Okay.

Tony: Tonight, we are going to continue our conversation on listening to music and we’ve covered a few different topics already. In this series, we talked about streaming services.

Tony: We talked about headphones and earbuds. We talked about small desktop speakers. And in our last episode, we talked about larger floor standing speakers tonight. I thought we would talk about playback source. How you play back music, whether that be from a computer, a TV, a portable device, CD player, any, and all of those things and listen to music.

Tony: first of all, let’s just start with talking about how each one of us listens to music and what sort of playback systems we have. Steven, would you like to start us off?

Steven: Sure. So the basic source I use is CDs. So I, if I have something I like, then I’ll buy the CD. Or if I see something that intrigues me, then I’ll buy the CD. And then as a refinement of I’ll rip the CD to an SSD and then I can listen to that from my computer while I’m working.

Tony: And just so we cover this, you still buy CDs to acquire music as opposed to other methods like streaming. Can you talk a little bit about that and why you choose to still buy CDs in 2020? Yeah.

Steven: Yeah. So I’ll buy the CD, I guess, for a few reasons. So one is so that I own the music and it doesn’t disappear. I’ve always got it. And then that seems to be a search for how to get to CD quality music on streaming services. But because I own the CD, I’ve got CD quality.

Tony: Okay. I haven’t bought a CD in a while, but how many CDs would you say you buy in a year?

Steven: Oh, I’ve been buying a reasonable number recently, maybe one or two a month.

Tony: Okay. That’s a pretty good pace there. So you have CDs and a CD player, and you have that hooked up to a pair of speakers.

Steven: Oh, I’m more likely to hear the ripped version from my computer. These days

Steven: most likely,

Tony: And what format are you ripping them in?

Steven: I used to use an uncompressed audio file format that I can’t remember the name of it which offered compression options. And I chose the no compression option, but then for slightly odd reasons, I’ve decided to just go with regular 16 bit uncompressed YF. Cause it’s the lowest common denominator and SSDs these days are becoming pretty inexpensive.

Steven: So you can get couple of terabytes for a few hundred dollars and you might as well just put music on an SSD and might as well just have the full quality.

Tony: Right. Cool. Well, Bob, let’s talk about you. What do you use to acquire music and also, how do you listen to that music?

Bob: Acquisition is a little bit more complicated than Steven, but I’m a big fan of. Owning a physical copy of the media. I typically like to acquire CDs.
